My husband and I started trying to conceive this month. I am now 8 days late on my period however I have taken 3 tests this week and they are all negative. This is my first month off of the pill so I'm thinking that it has messed me up a little but these 8 days have really thrown me off. I'm usually never even one day late. It just seems like it's not going to come. I'm just not sure what to do or if there is anything that I should do? Do we just keep trying during this time, even if I don't get my period this month? Sorry to ask this silly question but with our first child, we didn't have to "try" so we are new to this whole planning and trying thing for number 2.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the advice ladies! After 5 tests and 13 days late on my period, I got a positive test! I'm so excited to be pregnant (a little shocked that it happened so quickly). I have no idea why it took so many tests before it came up positive though. Thanks for taking the time to respond! Of course I'm already feeling sick and so tired! Let the fun begin!

First off make sure the three tests you took were not all from the same box. I purchased two pregnancy tests that both read negative and I was nearly 5 weeks pregnant when I took them! Also, definitely keep trying even if you don't get your period. Unless you "temp" to track exactly when you're ovulating you really don't know, so just go for it! There are also other tell-tale signs that you may be ovulating such as cervical mucus texture (yuck, I know, but it works!) and as I mentioned above taking your basal body temperature. A great book for when you're trying to conceive is "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". I can't recommend it enough! I was diagnosed with infertility last June and was able to become pregnant with little intervention in late August, even without a steady cycle just by reading my body.
Good luck to you!

Dear K.,

Try some nice toning herbs for the womb such as raspberry leaf, nettle and oatstraw and try doing some uterine massage to help restore balance to the reproductive system. A nice belly rub can be performed with some organic coconut oil or sesame oil and few drops of lavender essential oil.

Also, to help balance hormones and tone the liver as well as reproductive organs, I make one heck of a tonic for this! If you'd like to take a peek...

How do you know you are "late"? Are you tracking ovulation or are you just assuming a typical 28 day cycle that you had on the pill? After coming off the pill, it is very unlikely that you will have a 28 day cycle and ovulate on day 14 - this is a "textbook" cycle, and in real life, most women deviate from this. Your body needs some time to regulate itself without artificial hormones. It's still safe to get pregnant and to try during this time, but your cycles will be a little wacky.

Unless you are tracking your ovulation with charting/temping - it would be very difficult to know you are really late. Even ovulation tests can give you false positives and only tell you that you are likely to ovulate in the next 24-48 hours, and don't confirm that you did.

Check with your Dr. I believe they recommend getting off the pill for a few cycles before getting pregnant. Certainly you would want to go through at minimum a cycle so you would know when you are ovulating.(If your body is ovulating again after birth control). Get some LH ovulation tests and test after your next period to know when you will ovulate.

I would call your ob/gyn for a blood test. I always tested negative on home tests - even with being 2 weeks late on a period. This happened to me last summer and we just had twins in Feb!
