J.,
You can always go to www.yellowpages.com , they have an option for a reverse-search, where they find out who it is by the phone number instead of finding a number by someone's name. I hope that helps.

This is just me..but i would answer it. If you are suspicious and he has nothing to hide then tell him to answer it or you will. That will be piece of mind and then do like the other ladies said and look it up online.
good luck and let us know what happens

J., first I would just call it back. If you are afraid to do so, then go to this website http://www.whitepages.com/reverse-lookup You can look up people by their phone number (not sure if it works on cell numbers, but it should for land lines). If it is a machine or solisitors or telemarketers then get on the DO NOT CALL LIST it now works for cell phones https://www.donotcall.gov/

We used to have a number that was very close to the number for a lady named "Bunny" for a little while we thought it was a prank. It was a ligitimate wrong number. poeple transposed the numbers on a regular basis and got our house. It went on for two years, then we began to tell people what Bunny's number was. Another year pasted and we got a call from Bunny herself thanking us for redirecting her customers. She was a single divoce supporting 6 children and running an at home desert catering business. We no longer have that line, but now I wonder how she is.
So don't be suspicious of every unkown number, answer it, and remeber you can politely say " i'm not interested." or "Sorry, you have the wrong number" or "May I have the name and contact information for your compnay? This number is on the federal do not call list, by making this call you are commiting a federal offense."

Telemarketers are now able to call cell phone numbers. Almost every state now has a no call number that you can call to block telemarketers.

call it and see who answers. If hes never answering either its probably a wrong number.

I had a situation a few years ago. My house phone rang one evening and a crying, perhaps young teenage, girl called wanting to talk to her dad. Well, my husband was a virgin when we married and I told this girl that she had a wrong number. She kept arguing with me that she needed to talk to her dad. I kept hanging up after trying to explain she had a wrong number but she thought I was just not letting her talk to him. My husband was at work so he couldn't talk to her himself. I asked her who she was looking for and tried to help her but she was truly upset. After about an hour of these phone calls one right after another I called the police and asked for an officer to come over. I explained she sounded very distraught and I was worried for her safety. The next time the phone rang I answered and told her she had a wrong number and to please talk to the officer, that he might be able to tell her the right number to call, maybe he could help her find her dad, he took the phone and introduced himself. They talked a few minutes and she never called back. I don't know if he helped her find her dad or not but he talked calmly and in a non threatening way.
It really may be a wrong number, it may be an old girlfriend, it may be an old guy friend he doesn't want to be around anymore, but the fact is you'll never know what is going on until you call the number. If you don't want him to know what you did then use a pay phone to call. That way it won't show up on the phone bill as a called number.
