I am seriously considering getting Lasik. I'd love to hear from those who have had it your impressions. I'm especially thinking about the following questions, but feel free to answer however you feel.
-How much should it cost?
-How do you know who the best doctor is to do it? What questions did you ask?
-Did you have any side effects?
-How long ago did you do it, and how has your eyesight been since then?
-Did you do it before or after pregnancy? If before, did your eyes change at all during pregnancy?

Thanks so much in advance!

What can I do next?

How much should it cost? (It was $1500 per eye)
-How do you know who the best doctor is to do it? What questions did you ask? ( I chose my doctor through the best word of mouth. I knew at least 5-10 people that had gone to this one particular doctor and they were all very pleased with his work. You could ask a trusted doctor you see regularly if they could recommend someone. I ask my obgyn doc for recommendations all the time because I trust his judgement so much. Doctors tend to know who the good doctors are. I just asked them to describe the procedure. They did one eye first and the second eye the next day. They give you a valium, the procedure takes all of 4 minutes and you don't feel a thing. I went home, slept off the valium and I could see like never before when I woke up. Truly amazing technology!)
-Did you have any side effects? (My eyes were a little dry and got tired easily for a few weeks after the surgery, but they said that was common. They were fine after that.)
-How long ago did you do it, and how has your eyesight been since then?( I did it about 13 years ago and it was the best money I ever spent on myself! I have noticed a change in my eyesight in the last couple of years-I am 40 now-but it is just the natural age of my eye. Nothing to do with the surgery)
-Did you do it before or after pregnancy? If before, did your eyes change at all during pregnancy? (I did it before my pregnancies and it is hard to say if the pregnancies affected the change or if it was just the natural aging of my eyes as I had my children in my late 30's.)

Hope this helps!
A.

I had Lasik in 2004. I had extremely bad near-sightedness, and astigmatism in both eyes, and also had thin corneas. The price of the procedure is affected by these things. Different lasers are used in different circumstances, that's why you'll hear so many different prices. I paid $3000.

It was like a miracle!! I could see! My eyesight was 30/20 after the procedure, so not perfect but good enough to pass the driver's license test. I did not have to wear glasses at all for almost five years after. Then, because of age probably, I began to wear glasses for driving and for watching movies (things in the distance). I still need NO glasses for reading or computer work even though I am now 50!

I had mine done after my pregnancy and a year after stopping breastfeeding. That was required at the time, since both pregnancy and BFing can affect your eyesight, I guess.

Side effects included some discomfort the same day of the procedure, but it didn't last long. Then I needed to use moisturizing drops for quite awhile siince my eyes have always been dry. Eventually that need went away. I have no regrets other than this procedure wasn't available much sooner!

I paid 5000 in 99 and used a doctor who performed over 350 already at that point. i later got pregnant. I had zero compications except for occasional dry eye that is relieved by otc drops. it was worth every penny.
my crazy neighbor claimed she just paid 1400 last year. I asked that doctor and he said it was 4500 last year. why she lied is beyond me.
do not do it during pregnancy. i have had twelve years with no complications . i am supposed to use drops twice daily but i haven't yet. i still have better than 20/20.

I had it done about 10 years ago. We had to pay 500 for one eye and 750 for the other because I had a stygmatism (have no idea if that is spelled right)! I LOVE it!!! Best thing ever! They did the surgery and then I went home to take a nap and when I woke up I could SEE!! my prescription before was about 400/20, I am not sure what it is now, probably not 20/20 but pretty close. I did it before pregnancy, and I did not notice any changes during or after being pregnant. The only side effect I think I have had is that I am definitely more sensitive to the sunlight now, I cannot be out on a bright day without sunglasses but that is no big deal. Oh and at night streetlight and stuff get the star effect but no big deal there either. Seriously, not a single regret!

I'm glad the others who posted had a good experience. I think it's too scary, but then I wouldn't get any elective surgery, especially not on my eyes as long as they worked well enough with glasses.

The mother of a friend of mine had the procedure and it was botched or something, because she couldn't see at all and had to go out of state to another doctor to have it corrected. She would not do it again. For weeks she was functionally blind.

Also, I have read that later in life it causes you to need reading glasses sooner.

I had my lasik about 10 years ago now and it was the best thing I have ever done. I had a stigmatisim in both eyes and MAY need glasses for reading later (getting older and such) BUT I would do it again in a heartbeat!

cost...2,500.00
no side affects, the first day it felt like salt in my eyes, took a tylenol PM and slept, woke up feeling great and could see!!! Coming off the table I could even read the clock, although slightly blurry.
My regular eye dr recommended Dr Brown (male) off Talmadge in Toledo Ohio, not too far from you ...and he was great. I get life time enhancements if needed.
My eyesight is still 20/20.
I had it done before pregnancy and I have not had any changes (that was a concern for me too)
I asked every question I could think of but most of it is covered in a pre surgery DVD.
Even if i need glasses later the cost savings of not needing glasses, contacts, solutions etc is well worth it
My husband had it done many more years ago and he also continues to have 20/20 vision, he had his done through a different clinic and dr, I dont remember the name.
If you can afford it and are really dependent on glasses for everything it is the best ever..i was scared of course BUT hands down id do it again...if you want the drs name and number I went through please PM me.

I had mine done in 2000, at 2,200 per eye. My right eye was -8.75 and left was -9.25, so I could only see blurs of color. If you took my glasses or contacts and put me in my room or front yard, I would have no clue where I was. The doctor I chose had performed over 200 surgeries. They gave me a Valium, then it took about 10 minutes to perform the surgery (you can smell your eye being burned by the laser). As soon as I was up off the table I could see as if I were looking thru wax paper. On the ride home my vision progressively got clearer. By the time I was home, there was a searing pain in both eyes, and they told me to sleep as soon as I arrived, but the pain wouldn't allow sleep. Thank goodness my mother had a Valium prescription, because if I hadn't taken another one, I would not have been able to sleep. Once I woke, about 6 hours later, the pain was gone and I could see!!!! Miraculous, really. I had my first daughter in 2006, and about 2 months after her birth, I started squinting to read the guide on TV. I have been in glasses ever since, but only -1.50 and -2.00. The downside is that I cannot ever wear contacts or have the surgery again, because they had to burn off so much of my eye that contacts won't correct the curvature of my cornea and if I have the surgery again, I risk corneal meltdown. I had twins in 2010, and have noticed another downgrade in my vision. I'm 30 now.

A friend had it done in her 40's and now she still has to wear glasses -- for reading.
So - if you think you're going to stop wearing glasses --- think again.
Your eyes continue to change as you get older. Just wear your glasses.
