Laser Hair Removal- Bikini Area

As a post pregnancy gift to myself I am considering doing laser hair treatment to my bikini line. I will wait until I am finished breastfeeding as well. I have searched online and have found some information on the process. I do understand that treatment is different for various skin colors, hair color, etc. Just wondering how many treatments it took you to have the hair removed? Was it painful? What was your final overall cost from start to finish. I have found prices per session but just wondering what the average number of sessions you would need. Finally, are there any risks to laser hair removal?

I work in a medical spa where we do laser hair removal. I have also had treatments done on my underarms.
There are lots of different machines that are used for laser hair removal. We use a Sonata at my office. If you are a good candidate for the process and have a well-experienced tech, expect to need AT LEAST 5-8 treatments to get 85-90% hair reduction. Most patients really don't get 100% hair removal. It just doesn't happen. You will likely go in for treatments every 8 weeks or so, to treat all cycles of hair growth. Yes, it does hurt, especially if you are having your period, or right before, so keep that in mind during scheduling. We offer patients a topical numbing cream that they can apply to areas to be treated prior to treatment. Topical creams will help, so can taking Advil about 30 minutes before your appointment, but it is still going to hurt. Costs do vary quite a bit, based on location so do your research on that. Also, you mentioned this being a post-pregnancy "gift" to yourself. Are you done having kids? If you aren't, wait to have laser hair removal. I got my underarms done before I ever got pregnant and had almost no hair left. It all came back when I got pregnant. Hormonal changes can really impact your results, so just be aware of that from the beginning.
There are risks associated with any laser use. Discuss this with the doctor/technician who treats you.
Good luck with your decision.

Hi Lillian,

I'm in the process (3 out of 6 treatments) of getting my bikini area done.

I got this for $139 through www.groupon.com. They send out daily "deals". You only have that day to purchase the deal, but you usually get a year to use it (depending on the vendor).

My advise would be to sign up for groupon and wait for a special to come through.

Good luck!

These are great questions for your doctor. Do lots of research, go for free consultations to several different places. This will all depend on what kind of skin do you have? And their equipment. I would ask for their patients contact info for feedback. The most important thig is the doctors license # look them up. Good luck, you will love it!

I am about to have my underarms done, so I can't offer much advice on the treatment. But I wanted to let you know that I was spurred to do it because I found a Groupon deal for 6 treatments at a very reputable facility for $185 (valued at about $1300). When I consulted about doing it a few years ago, they siad it takes 4-6 treatment to remove hair fully and it would definatley cost in the thousands. So, I thought you might want to check out the site because they had laser hair removal deals in a few cities I keep my eye on.

I'm at 5 out of 6 of my treatments (used Groupon as well). Yes, it hurts (in spots), but not nearly as bad as waxing, so totally worth it in my opinion. I take a book and try to distract myself. it works.

I still have some growth, but very little and what is growing takes FOREVER to grow, so I'm very pleased.

I suspect that IF I do have to shave this summer for bikini season, it will be very minimal...

I would totally do it...
