Lactose Intolerant? - Leesburg,VA

Hi! So in the past I've noticed that when I have milk or frozen yogurt I would get a little gassy and sometimes have the runs (sorry way TMI lol). I never really thought anything of it. Last night around 1am (I am a night owl and since I don't work in the summer I'm up late. I'm a teacher), I had some chocolate milk. Today I woke up and met a friend at the park and I started feeling just horrible. I got a really bad stomach ache, got the chills and then had to run to the bathroom and had just terrible diarreah (sp?). I ended up feeling yucky for a couple hours after that. I have never had a problem if I have cheese or ice cream though. Is it possible to be lactose intolerant with only just milk and not cheese? It never really clicked until now, but now I feel just fine and I don't have a fever so I know for sure that I'm not sick. So does this sound like I could be lactose intolerant? or any other ideas? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I don't drink milk all that often, but I guess I should go and have that test done.

I am lactose intolerant too. I can tolerate cheese. But milk, forget it! I'll lever leave the bathroom! I can't handle some ice cream if its very moderate. My stomach will start cramping the most awful cramps. It doesn't even take my minutes after drinking milk before I become sick. I can have it in cooked foods, like if I make a casserole or something like that, but I can not handle straight milk!

Yep. Been there, done that. They have lactose pills at any pharmacy. You can take 1 or 2 before eating dairy and it helps your body digest.

I have to weigh in on this one, because both my husband and I noticed that we have become increasingly that way in the last year or so. Milk is definitely the worst offender for us, we can usually do pretty well with cheese or even ice cream as long as it is limited. The first thing I was noticing myself, was that immediately after milk I am very tired. So I started avoiding it unless maybe I was going to sleep shortly after I consumed it. Never did check how much but I know it contains Tryptophan, anything that has the potential to make me sleepy will do so, so I just attributed it to that for a while. Not long ago though, I noticed that the next day after having milk I end up with awful gas pains. They don't last long but they are brutal! I am pretty much avoiding milk altogether now, that seems to be the only dairy product that does that to me. My husband now avoids it as well, milk would make him a regular fart factory...lets just say that life is so much more pleasant without all that going on in the background of my daily life, lol. You're not alone..if I were you, I would avoid drinking milk altogether and see what happens!

I am lactose intolerant and I have no problem eating cheese, ice cream and yogurt in moderate amounts. Drinking milk, even goat milk, or putting it on cereal gives me gas, cramps and diarrhea. I don't know why. I have read that many people who are lactose intolerant can tolerate cheese. I know yogurt has enzymes that help digest it.

I have tested allergic to chocolate. I can have it infrequently without an upset stomach. Had you been eating chocolate often without ill effects? If so, this chocolate could have put you over the edge if you're intolerant or allergic to it.

Same with the milk. If you'd been consuming dairy products the chocolate milk may have been one drink too much.

I can drink lactose free milk without difficulty. I have not tried drinking it every day. I use rice milk.

I am allergic to several foods. Lactose causes gas and diarrhea. For me, food allergies cause an upset stomach and diarrhea but not necessarily gas.

Your symptoms do sound like you're lactose intolerant.

When I was having some "trouble", my doc ordered a lactose intolerance test. It involved breathing something at particular intervals. I don't remember much about it, it was so "unremarkable". Easiest test I ever took. When I mentoned that to her, she said that it just meant that I wasn't lactose intolerant. She told me that another patient of hers was close to cussing about it. Now SHE tested positive for lactose intolerance.

Maybe that test would help you know...

Oh yes. I can eat ice cream, yogurt and cheese ( in very small amounts ) but when it comes to straight cows milk.... NOPE! My stomach gets very gassy and I feel so bloated and uncomfortable. Something about cows milk is so much more potent than other dairy foods. I drink unsweetened almond/coconut milk! It is very good!

I used to have these problems, and I work with a lot of people who react to one food or another. A lot spend a ton of money on testing, and a lot go through elimination diets which are a nuisance. I took the approach that it's not normal for the body to reject certain foods, so I must be missing necessary nutrients to allow me to process that food. I've seen devoted 6 years to attending seminars and trainings, and I've found that pretty much all of these intolerances can be eliminated or at least significantly reduced by ADDING nutrients rather than eliminating them. I can now eat everything with no problems, and I've found the same thing in all my classes including people with massive lists of problem foods. I work with people who have diverticulitis, acid reflux, IBS (including constipation, diarrhea or both), food sensitivities, nut allergies, hives and so on, and the same approach works for everyone.
