Lactose Free Formula Baby

My son is on a lactose free formula and reaching his one year birthday soon. For those of you who have ever used a lactose free formula or something similar when/how did you make the transition to "regular" milk or is it just hit and miss until the digestive system matures?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

I mixed his formula and 2% milk for a couple of days and then switched totally to 2% and have not had any issues.

My pediatrician told me to put half water and half milk. Then we slowly made the transition to all milk. My daughter was fine that way.

I would not go to cows milk at all. Your son needs liquids and food - cow's milk is not an essential part of a human's diet.

Hi-

Both of my children were on lactose-free baby formula when they were infants because of digestive problems. With my daughter, we just transitioned her over to whole milk gradually. She loves milk. Unfortunately, her body still didn't, and after a while, she was vomiting every time she drank too much of regular milk. We finally put her on vanilla soy milk, and she's doing fine. After all that with my daughter, we automatically put my son on the lactose-free formula, but we tried lactose-free whole milk, and he's doing great on that. It really is trial and error. You may want to try the lactose-free whole milk first, then go to soy if it doesn't work. However, we can't always find the lactose-free whole milk, or it is available in limited quantities. Also, the lactose-free whole milk is almost always more expensive than the soy (and I buy both, consisitently.)
I would also talk to your pediatrician, and he/she may have recommendations for you.

I put my daughter on Lactaid milk until she was 3...expensive, yes, but not compaired to formula!

I actually had no problems transitioning my first son to whole milk. We did it very gradually and he was fine with it. I think he just had problems with the lactose tolerance when he was younger.

I have my son on Lactaid brand milk. They have all different kinds. It is easy to digetst and has 20% more of the daily value of calcium than other milk. My son was on Oberwise whole milk after he turned one and his diapers were horrible. My doctor recommended that I either try soy milk, or lactaid free milk. He loves the Lactaid free milk, and had no problems after I switched him. Hope that helps.
