Kindergarten Grading

depends on the school district. We have twice a year where they give you a set of skills and there are things like progressing, mastered, not demonstrating. First grade was about the same thing but it was 4 reports instead of 2.

My daughter didn't get A-F grades in Kindergarten but something like 1-4 or S (satisfactory) C (commendable) etc. The school wants to have a way to let you know if there are any areas of concern to be aware of, but they aren't calculating any kind of a GPA. At our school, talking with teacher at conferences and in between has been more informative than the report card. She is now going into 4th grade and is still not graded on an A-F scale.

Yes they're graded. I guess it will depend on your schools grading system with their kindergarteners. My son goes to a charter school and they sent home homework, and quarterly assessment tests. They have us parents work with our kids here at home with homework. It wasn't much. It's amazing at what he knows. He's in first grade now and last year I couldn't believe what all he learned in school. :-) Back in my day when I was in kindergarten the kids then weren't taught half as much. lol
I would talk with her teacher to get a better perspective on the goals for her kindergarten class. My sons teacher used smiley faces, and she sent home the classwork that had the wrong answers and asked me to work with him here at home with what he got wrong. It really helped him a lot!

Most schools do not give letter grades at that age, but you should ask.
If you haven't gone to back to school night yet, I'm sure it will be covered there, otherwise just call the school.

They shouldn't be-I gues it depends on the school and whether or not it is public or private.

Yes they are. It will depend on the school i've seen letter grades, numbers or checks with a plus or minus, my youngest son got letters like P (practicing) M (mastered) etc.

My daughter does online school, but it's through a traditional school district. For kindergarten, they were graded with numbers (1,2,3,4) with 4 meaning above grade level, 3 was at grade level, 2 was progressing towards grade level, and 1 was below grade level. Some schools use a simple "satisfactory, progressing, unsatisfactory" scale. I don't think letter grades are used until later on in elementary school.

My kids went to private school for Kinder, and they were graded as E - Excellent, S - Satisfactory, and N - Needs Work. A lot of schools do that for the first half of first grade, also. They start getting real letter grades during the last half of first grade, or the start of second grade.
