Kids/adults/movies - a Vent

So I went to see Snow White and the Huntsman at the local Dollar theater (yep - super lucky, they have 2nd run movies for $1-2!). THis is a PG-13 movie, basically for older kids and adults. It wasn't excessively gory or bloody, BUT it was extremely creepy. Totally not for little kids. So here's where the vent begins.

It was the 12:40 showing and most of the people were adults or older kids. Except the woman behind me and possibly her friend - who brought their 5-6 year old girl and boy. The boy was reasonably ok - asked questions but wasn't freaked out. The girl was getting progressively more scared. At first she asked questions - like - "mommy, is that man dead?" when a main character gets stabbed with quite a large dagger. But, of course, the mom wanted to see the movie and kept this poor kid in the theater - which she had only paid ONE DOLLAR for, for another 15 minutes. Basically making the child and everyone within earshot unhappy.

I get that people want to see adult movies - but if you're going to go see a cheap movie, why can't you hire a sitter to either watch your kid at home or take them to the movie so they can see a kid movie with your kid while you see the adult one? You know your kid is freaked out - is your seeing a movie more important?

I have made my son sit and finish out a movie when he says "I'm done" because he's not scared, etc., but this movie was NOT going to get less creepy.

WHY must they torture their kids and others? Sigh - vent over.

What's your take on this? Any "horror" stories of your own?

What can I do next?

I don't get this, honestly. She could easily rent the DVD when it comes out & watch it after her kids are in bed. Being selfish is one of those things that SHOULD go out the door when one has kids, but some people just don't care.

It's the general sense of entitlement that is becoming more & more prevalent amount kids AND adults in modern society. You'll find it everywhere, really.

Ugh. I feel your pain. And I think Laurie A hit the nail on the head:

"They are more important than anyone else."

They all have their reasons... but none of them justify ruining other paying patrons' time. The rest of us paid for a sitter or got a friendly relative to watch them, so we didn't have to listen to or deal with our own kids. Do they honestly think we want to listen to THEIRS?

In case any of you are unintentionally guilty of this, the answer is NO!
And I'm not even talking about the $1 movie (we don't even have those around here)... I'm talking about the $9.50 a pop movie.
I figured it out one time a few years ago. It cost my husband and I close to $75 to go see a 7:00 pm movie. Why? Baby sitter, food for the kids and sitter at home, movie tickets, popcorn/drinks at the movie. By the time you include US eating dinner, we were over $100. And then to have a kid kicking your seat back, or talking throughout? Ugh! And yeah... let me miss some of the prime part of the movie so I can go hunt down an "attendant" to complain about the parents/child....

Hubby and I go to the movies a lot. I have seen an up tick of parents bringing small kids/babies to adult movies. Drives me nuts! We generally go in the evening 7 p.m.-9 p.m. times. These kids are tired, don't want to sit, scared or just don't know how to behave.

One movie there were several kids and the little girl kept running up and down the aisle, talking very loudly and generally being disruptive. I know several movies goers complained because someone from the theatre came and talked to the parents. They finally left. We are talking 10:00 p.m.!!!! This kid was 4 or 5.

I understand the cost of babysitters. Been there, done that. However, I do not have any patience for parents who bring their little ones to adult movies (rated r). Leave them at home. They have no business being there. I paid good money to go to the movie and spent a few hours away from mine. When you start infringing on my enjoyment that is when I get upset.

WHY must they torture their kids and others? Because people are selfish and stupid. Or stupidly selfish.

When our kids were little, we would either get a sitter or we would go to the show by ourselves.

I have no problem telling someone to shut their kid up.

It drives me crazy when people bring their young kids (I would say under 10) to adult movies. Adult movies are rated PG-13 and higher for a reason. I hate spending $10 each to see a movie and then being disrupted by kids asking questions or even worse- babies crying!! I have 2 kids (4 and 1) and have never taken them to a non-kid movie. In fact, our youngest who is almost 2 has never even been. When a kid movie comes out we take turns taking the oldest. I will never forget seeing Transformers 2 I believe, at the IMAX and having a baby a row over screaming. If you can't get a babysitter, stay home. It's just a movie, I rarely get to see the movies I want anymore. There is enough violence in the media without subjecting your kids to movies like Batman. But people do it anyway, they let their 8-10 year olds play Call of Duty and Gears of War and they don't care to understand why that probably isn't a good idea.

Why do they do this?
Because they are more important than anyone else in the theater!

I Pay extra to go to a theater that will kick anyone out that talks or texts in the theater. It is worth my sanity.

They have even banned repeat offenders.

I did not attend an adult movie for years, when we first had our daughter, unless I had a baby sitter.

I was not going to subject them to our daughters sounds and I was not going to subject her to the awful feelings others would have about her sounds.

This is a huge sore subject with me. I wish people would just keep their kids under 6 at home. My husband and I go to a LOT of movies, basically every single weekend. Last weekend we saw "Total Recall". Its rated R. Two different couples had 3/4 year olds in there with them. The movie started at 12:10pm, mid day. The kids kept getting up and leaving, one parent following them. Luckily, we sit toward the front so we don't get distracted by most of it, but we HATE it. I don't even remember the last time we saw a movie that was not interrupted by either someone (kid or adult) chatting thru the whole damn thing, someone constantly checking their phone where the FLORESCENT light is seen by everyone, moms taking their baby and pacing back and forth on the SIDE of the room where we can still SEE you so its STILL distracting...I guess its *expected* when you are in a *kid* movie, but still, I think people should be respectful that there are others their who have PAID to see a movie, not be listening to your chatty kid thru the whole thing. My ex and I got babysitters or stayed home if we didn't. I don't see how even the PARENT can enjoy the movie when they are missing so much by taking care of their kid. Ugh. I could go on and on about this all day. Sorry for the rambling but I agree and hate it and don't get it.

I think the worst would have been seeing a 3 year old with her mother to watch " Sweeney Todd" when it came out. The poor girl was so freaked out and crying. Her mother just told her to put her hands on her eyes. I'm a huge Johnny Depp fan, so of course, I went to the theater to watch it. I can understand someone else wanting to do the same. However, bringing a little child to a movie like this, is just terrible.

At one point, I looked over, met the eyes of the mother and just shook my head, and said to her , " Seriously"? She got all mad , even though her little girl was telling her she wanted to go. Finally they left.

It's a graphic movie, and rated R. It's rated R for a reason.

My son has his limits, I know them, and respect them. Plain and simple.

I went to see the midnight showing of one of the Twilights with my Twi-mom friends and sat next to a 3/4 yr old girl whose mother kept yelling at her to be still or else she was going to take her to the bathroom and "whip her butt" if she didn't stop wiggling...the bad part is the mom kept saying "Eat your candy, drink your soda, just be quiet". So sad. Not sure if the little girl was on a sleepy sugar high or she wanted to get out of there from all the bad acting.

The only movies we see in the theater anymore are childrens' movies. So, it's been a while since I have encountered this one!

Why do they torture their kids and others? Probably selfish reasons or underestimating/overestimating the child's ability to process the information. "He's only 6, he won't understand it anyway." "She's 4 and it's during her naptime, so maybe she'll sleep."

Horror stories? Well, kind of funny. My father (pretty clueless about pop culture movies) took my sister and three of her friends to see American Pie because they wanted to see it. He gave my sister his credit card and she used the automated machine to buy the tickets. My dad walked through the doors with all four girls, popcorn and sodas and then spent the next 90 minutes figuring out how to explain to the other parents that he had taken their children (13) to an R-rated movie. Fortunately the other parents thought it was a funny/honest mistake and appreciated his phone call the next day. My mother still teases him about this one!

Reason #45 we stick with Netflix and Hulu for most of our movie viewing. If it's that good, we can wait to see it (except the Hobbit movie, damn straight I'm going to see that in the theater!)

I take my 6 hear old to the movies all the time. He's seen ghost rider, avengers and even abraham linchon vampire hunter. He's not scared by that kind of stuff and even with his issues he knows to behave in movies. He doesn't like missing any part! Sometimes he better then most adults

I can't say anything that hasn't already been said, but when I was11-12 yo I went to go see my Aunt and Uncle in another state. My Aunt is very dear, but she a bit of a snob and very religous. I don't know WHO's idea it was (not mine) but we went to go see Bull Durham in the theater. I'm pretty sure she had NO idea what it was about and it was pretty embarassing to sit next to my Aunt and Uncle during that show. I'm pretty sure SHE was more horrified and emabarrassed than I was though! LOL

Parents need to know their children. My 8 year old and 5 year old can handle movies like that. Not true of my 10 year old, so no I would never take him, if the others couldn't then we would leave.

It's not the first movie I have had to leave because of a little one, it won't be the last. That's why we only do the dollar movies, if I have to leave, I don't feel ripped off.

This absolutely gets under my skin when adults bring young kids to an adult movie. One particular experience I had was when we went to see Passion of the Christ movie. The theatre was packed and we were unlucky enough to get stuck sitting in front of this family who brought two little ones. One of them kept walking back and forth in the row hitting us on the heads. Not wanting to miss any part of the movie we tried ignoring it. Totally frustrating. I wanted to turn around and get on to the adults. I was more disgusted that they brought these little ones to such a movie. As you know, there was a lot of bloody disturbing scenes in this movie, not for a young child to see. We have two children a nine year old and a 2 year old. We take turns taking the 9 year old. Haven't yet taken the 2 year old because I don't want to be a disruption to others. Wish others would be as considerate.

$1 movie. Why did she not hire a baby sitter? Probably economics.

This economy is lousy. The view from the poor house in poverty flats is horrible. It over looks the landfill of jobs or the definite lack of jobs. The unemployment rate has put so many people out of work that employers have lowered the wages they are willing to pay new hires because there are so many applicants for each new job.

I haven't been to more than two or three movies in the last year. Movies here are $8 and up. Pop corn is $5 and up, mostly up . . . and a soda that they fill with ice is $5 and up. I took a Taco Bell 42 ounce soda and filled it with ice. I then took a 12 ounce can of soda and completely filled the cup. The can of soda was about 25 cents. The cup of soda was $2.59.

Good luck to you and yours.

Years ago, we went to a Batman movie (the first Tobey MacGuire one) and a child kept asking his father anxiously "Daddy, why is that man hitting Batman?! He's hurting him!" *There's your cue to exit dad*... but no....

I'm with Angela, in that I don't go to too many movies any more because frankly, I don't want to be in the company of talky kiddos --traumatized or not. These days, I tend to go to the second-run theatres which serve beer-- and to their adults-only showings in the evenings.
