Kid's Funiture
My son is rapidly outgowing his toddler bed and I am looking for a place to buy a bedroom set. I want good quality, but I am on a budget so I need a place with reasonable prices. Not cheap, but reasonable. I do want it to last a long time! I am in Pontiac, but realy anywhere in Oakland County, Macomb, or even parts of Wayne County would be fine. Also, if there is anyplace you would recomment I NOT go, I would appreciate the warning! TIA

Defintiely Ikea - and they actually have decent quality. Their cribs are about the cheapest you can get, and they are rated very high for safety.

We just bought my grand-daughter a bed at IKEA in Canton; my adult son's (who lives at home) also has a bedroom set from IKEA and with a bed, nightstand, desk and file cabinet. Good quality and low budget. You can take a peek online first. It is worth the trip out there. I recommend first thing in the morning on one of your days off as it gets very crowded! I also support the craigslist idea - we outfitted our entire living room from craigslist.

Have you checked Craig's List?

I would recommend Ikea. It is good quality and does last. The reason it's cheaper is because you assemble it yourself. As long as you follow the assembly instructions the furniture is long lasting. I have furniture from there in my kitchen, kids bedrooms (3 and 5 year old) and lounge and have found it all to be very hard wearing and well worth the cost.
Also craigslist.org is a fantastic site to find used higher end furniture at more reasonable prices. Saying that though I would recommend buying the mattress new because you just don't know who you're buying from, and always take someone with you if you do go with the craigslist option, just for safety.
Hope you find what you're looking for.

Having worked in high end furniture for 6 years-three of them in customer service (store is no longer in business), I can tell you there is a lot of good stuff and bad stuff out there. If you want a nice quality set I would check out the Lea that someone else suggested and then also try Mother Hubbard in Novi. They are canadian made, and made well to last through the years. Versitile options that are not to cutesy (meaning you can grow with them). Unlike alot of the responders, personally if you want good quality at a reasonable price I would stay away from Ikea. While they make really cute stuff, it is not necessarily something that is going to last as far as quality or construction-in my opinion. What I would confirm though that it is something Made in the Northa America. Stay away from any imports (especially Inodnesia) they often use what the industry refers to as Green Wood meaning not fully grown, so not very strong because the tree is barely developed. They have some amazing looks, at really great prices but the quality is awlful-it was my worst nightmare when I worked in customer service.

J.,
We purchased Lea brand of children's furniture for our children. They carry it at Art Van and should be able to order anything you want. They have a website http://www.leafurniture.com/ so you can see what is available. For our little boy we purchased a collection called Deer Run and love it!
Another suggestion is check out craigslist.com for things people are wanting to sell.

I looked at Baby's Room (good quality, very expensive), Value City, JC Penny, Ikea (most furniture made of pine) and Art Van; I chose a bedroom set from Art Van that we're pleased with.

We bought my sons set at The Baby's Room, across from Great Lakes Crossing. The stuff their is a little on the more expensive side, but we got it on sale and it will last him forever. (We actually got a new crib and conversion set to get a full size head board...which are really really hard to find).
We also looked at the Furniture Bedroom...it's on Telegraph in Bloomfield I think. They have a whole store of kids furniture...we went about this time last year and they were having really great sales.
