Keeping Blankets On

My 6 mo old sleeps well in her crib. However she is definately a mover and often gets stuck up against the bumpers leading to crying although not always waking up. (Tried removing the bumpers but she just gets her arms or feet stuck in the rails). I am concerned that it is getting colder and she will not keep a blanket on. She is now wearing a onsie and typical sleeper pjs.(This was fine for spring and summer, but now she feels cold in the AM). Solutions for keeping a blanket on her/keeping her warm?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I am going to get 1-2 sleep sacks. I thought she had outgrown them because she is wearing 12 mo clothing but I see they come that big. I also thought they might make her sleep less because of restricting movement but that doesn't seem to be the experience of others. She does wear the fleece feet pjs already with long sleeve onsies and sometimes socks under. It is difficult because she is tall and big for her age to get a size that fits right to wear things underneath. I am getting her in wear a blanket in her packnplay for naps without incident so hopefully it will carry over (and we will turn on the heat before nov!)

My son was also getting stuck in the bumper and sticking his arms and legs out of the slats and getting stuck. So I bought mesh made to velcro around the crib so he couldn't get his arms and legs out. Here is a link to the product through amazon

The greatest invention are those sleep sack's. There is one approved by the SIDS foundation that they sell at Babies R' Us but they are usually sleeveless. Carter's makes them too and I love them because they are long-sleeved. Even though she moves around at 6 months (my son was a mover), they were great. One Step Ahead's website has one's with legs on them, instead of a "sack", if that is a concern.

I wouldn't use an actual blanket in the crib yet. She's still to young. But all the sleep saks work great! Just add on the layers with thin pj's and/or long sleeve onesies depending on what you need. We have a 100+ year old house as well so I understand your need for warmth.

Hi, Colleen. The safest option for your baby would be a wearable blanket which you can find at Babies 'R Us, and maybe even Target carries them. A Halo sleep sack is along the same lines. You can get them in different sizes and different weights--they have lightweight ones for when it is warmer outside and heavier ones for the winter. I used them for both my kids and think they're fantastic, and you don't have to worry about the baby suffocating with a regular blanket. They are a bit expensive but well worth the money--keeps your child warm, and you don't have to worry. Here's a link for you to check them out:

You can put socks on her feet as long as they will be inside either feet pajamas or a sleep sack.

try a blanket sleeper, like a sleeping bag with safe arm holes and a bag like bottom. They work great, and are medically approved for safety. I never use crib bumpers (I have breathable one, but we are past that stage now.

colleen-Have you tried sleep sacks... they are great. no blankets in the cribs.. sleeves, or no sleeves, fleece, cotton, all colors, you can even put them on the baby when they are asleep...you can find them at marshals, babies r us and on line... the large and extra large sound like great ideas, but when the babies can stand and pull themselves up, it is not always totally worth it..

also, instead of bumbers, they actually make a white breathable subsitute that is sort of like very heavey netting that allows air to flow, but still blocks the slats on the crib...i can not remember the name, but babies r us had them ..good luck...

try a sleep slack we also used to on the really cold nights put a one piece cotton pj or thermals under a thick fleece one piece sleeper pjs. I never used one but you might have better luck w/ a sleep tent they cover the entire crib so she won't get stuck up against it and she also won't be able to get her limbs stuck in the rails.

I saw you already resolved the blanket issues (sleep sacks, great idea, thats what we used), but you didnt say anything about the bumpers so my suggestion is get a mesh bumper. My son had the same problem with getting his arms and legs stuck. We never used a regular bumper because they are now advised against for SIDS prevention, but once we were having the getting stuck problem we got a mesh bumper. They are sold at Babies R Us and places like that for about $30.

We had to keep our house cold last year (the warmest it ever got was 65) becuase of our heating situation. What we did was a onsie with the fleece sleeper pjs (from Children's place) and found that if we placed a fleece blanket over him then the fleece would stick a little and prevent someof the slipping. Also layering is thekey. If she is really cold then you can put her in regular pj's with fleece on top. Just remember, they they can regulate their own body temps by 6 months so she only needs to be dressed as warmly as you.

Hi Colleen -

Let me begin by saying that a 6 month old should NEVER have a blanket in her crib! She could easily become tangled in it and suffocate - as demonstrated by her inability to get herself unstuck from the sides of the crib. If she is getting stuck by the bumper you should remove it immediately - she could also get her head stuck in the bumper and suffocate that way!

Your best bet is to take EVERYTHING out of her crib - for warmth you can put her in regular pajamas and then get her a sleeper sack - they come in fleece and you can even put her in a fleece one piece (with feet) and then put her in the fleece sleeper sack - just be sure she is not getting over heated. Think about what you would want to wear to bed.

*If she is in a sleep blanket she won't get hung up on the crib rails. You can get them at Babies R Us - Walmart - Etc...

Definitely second the sleep sack suggestion, any kind will do, they are all basically the same. Her arms will stick out but her body and legs will be zipped up inside and stay warm. I used this with both my girls over the feet pj's.

HI,
You received a zillion answers so I just wanted to add a tip I used for my son with the footed pajamas and especially the fleece ones. Once he started walking (which was early - 8.5 months), we had the problem of having the pajama "feet" slide down off his feet and trip him. Even the elastic in the ankles wasn't enough with an active child. We used my husband's wrist bands (sweat bands) that he used when jogging. My husband has small wrists but you could use women's bands. Put on the pajamas/sleeper and then slip the wrist bands around your child like ankle bands. Any extra fabric in the pjs will stay in the legs - who cares if it bulges out like riding pants???!!! - but the footed part will stay perfectly in place.

Good luck!

We had the same trouble with our oldest daughter and the crib bumper. She rolled her tiny face into it just once, and I freaked out! We tried taking it off altogether, but she got her legs stuck badly a couple of times. She is also extremely active and now sleeps in a full size bed because the twin couldn't contain her. Anyway, we ended up wrapping the bumper around the outside of the bars only weaving it through enough to keep it in place. With tight ties this worked quite well, and the bumper stayed this way for our youngest daughter. There was obviously a small gap, so we positioned that up near her head because that never seemed to be the direction she would travel.

Hi Colleen,

I have a 7 month old, and we put him in a sleep sack- they're great! You can find them in Babies R us-also Kohl's, even in TJmaxx sometimes- they are a safe alternative for blankets- In terms of the bumper, I would get the breathable bumper, so you won't worry about her getting stuck in the bars, or caught in a regular bumper- It's working great for us, and solved both issues! The breathable bumpers are at Babies R Us too!

Best of Luck!

Hello,
I put my daughter in a sleep blanket. You can get them at Babies r us they are around $20 I think you can even get them in 2 packs . They come in a variety of sizes and fabrics. Last year I bought a large fleece one. It's like a sack that has shoulder straps and a zipper. My daughter could roll around in it and it never came off they only problem that she eventually had was trying to stand in the crib was difficult with it on. Here is the link to them at Babies r us online. Good luck

Hi Colleen,
I put a fleece/flannel "blanket sleeper" on, usually a size too big and regular pj's underneath. We're in an old house with little heat in the bedrooms, so the thick layers are necessary. I suppose if your home was heated well - a long sleeve onesie underneath would be enough. Maybe with a pair of leg warmers?
Also, you can put a blanket on the mattress under the sheet and flannel crib sheets really make a difference.

Hope this helps =)

That's what sleep sacks were made for! They're like a blanket that the child wears. Here are a few at Kohl's:
http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/baby/apparelinfants.jsp

As they got a little older, I'd put my kids in those ski-type pj's (with the cuffs at ankle and wrist) and put fuzzy footie pj's over that.

My kids would never keep a blanket on. My son, especially, slept poorly when he wasn't super warm. So I ended up dressing him in about five layers of pjs. Onesie, cotton pjs and then two layers of polar fleece. Also I always put socks on his feet.
I also bought something called a sleep sack. I think I got it at One Step Ahead catalog. Their arms went through arm holes and then there was just a sack that you could zip up. It doesn't last long because as soon as they want to pull themselves up in the crib it seems mean to have their legs in a sack. Better to just use feety pajams, but it might work foryou for a couple of months.
Good luck!
