I have a 5 year old daughter who likes to touch my face. I usually don't mind, however I just had oral surgery. She is now somewhat afraid of me . I have dentures. What should I do?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have talked to her and showed her that I am still her mommy. She is getting used to the "new" me. She now thinks that they are really pretty. She is now at a point that she likes to look in my mouth. I think its just to see my teeth. Things have really changed alot since I posted this. She wants to see my teeth and tells everyone to look at my smile. She cracks me up sometimes. She is always wanting me to let her see them. :-). Thanks for all the advice.

I have never been through what you are growing through so I will just give my 2 cents from my perspective. I think your daughters reaction is probably normal. What she has known for so long is different and her little mind is probably so full of questions. So I would maybe just tell her at a 5 year old level exactly what happened. This will probably eliminate some of her questions and give her time to ask her own. Also I think this is a good lesson on true beauty lying w/in a person instead of how they look. Ask her if she thinks mommy acts different or treats her different. In this you can let her come to her own conclusion that her mommy is just as wonderful and loves her just as much even is part of how she looks has changed. Life is full of changes so instilling that in her now is a great opportunity.

aww! Give her a few days since its all new to her and keep doing your daily routines and loving her as you always have been. Do the same things youve been doing with her to show her nothing has changed about you and you are still the same good mamma as always :)

I just read your "what happened? results" after I wrote this.. Awesome results!!

I've recently done the same thing.. before I had it done i sat my 6 yr old daughter and 5 yr old son down and explained to them that i was going to have my teeth pulled out and why and that i would not have any teeth for awhile but that i would be getting some new ones soon.. just like they loose their teeth and they grow back.. then after i had my teeth pulled (and my mouth healed a little bit lol) i showed them that my mouth looked just like theirs do.. that helped

My husband just had dentures. Just this week. My 5 year old is the same way as yours. What he had done was put them in and asked her for a hug. she said no daddy your teeth scare me. so what he had done was just wore the top pair for a day or two then she would still touch his face and the teeth did not scare her. then she said daddy will you show me your teeth. he showed her the top pair that he was wearing. she asked him to put the bottoms in and show her a pretty smile. she felt his face and said this is my daddy.

My husband had all of his teeth pulled a little over a year ago. So the kids got used to seeing him with no teeth. Just give her time to adjust. It is different becuase with my husband the thing that scared her was his voice had changed a little bit so to her (i think) his voice is what was not her daddy.

Let me know how she does. I hope she will do okay.

I had oral surgery in May of last year and my two youngest children were pretty accepting and oblivious to the lack of teeth. I had to wait 6 months to get my dentures because of finances, so my 8 year old son was the one with the issues. He had public place issues...they pass, it may take her a bit to grow accustomed to them but show her how they work, that is how I got my two youngest to come around and my oldest to find humor in it instead of disgust...hope this was helpful.
