First call your doctor and stop taking the meds. Second try taking benadryl for the itching and hives.

Good luck,

sounds like an allergic reaction. stop taking the antibiotics and call your doctor...even on a saturday they will have someone on call to help you. they will probably say to take benadryl (you can do this yourself with the over the counter dosage)and possibly steroids to help the itching and will change your anti-biotic. whatever you do stop taking the antibiotics...the reaction will only get worse. good luck

HI K. -
I've successfully used benadryl before as well (thank God) - and sounds like you've gotten some good advice re telling your doctor et al as well! I am connected in with a line of nutritional products, that is tangentially related here, so thought I'd add in my 2 bits on that as well - (excuse me if you are not interested in this - or you can just skip this for that matter -). There is a lot of info for quite awhile now in the alternative health arena re how the use of antibiotics, birth control, poor diet, stress et all wipes out the "good" bacteria in the digestive system, leaving the body more vulnerable to future symptoms or infections along with decreased intestinal health. This can result in a multitude of symptoms. It is SO helpful to replenish the good bacteria - which will help with digestive function, toxic load and increased overall health, as nutrition and digestion are KEY to the body's health - often overlooked by traditional Western doctors. Anyway, you may want to keep that in mind to find a way to replenish the "probiotics" for your ongoing health. I am involved with a fantastic line of nutritional products that will do this and so much more. - It is a simple and oh so easy way of assuring your daily nutritional needs on many levels including mental health (I am a Licensed MFT therapist in California and recomend it to my clients - and love it myself!) (Not to mention that kids love it! - so you can sneak in great health to them!! - no small feat) - anway - I know you did not request all this - good nutrition is just a passion for me at this time - so just passing on some tidbits. Also it's a networking model, so one can make some excellent money if that's of interest as well, though there is NO requirements other than an initial $36 dollar signup to get the products wholesale. OK - much luck to you K.

I had a similar situation - it was an allergic reaction. Go to an emergency room as quickly as possible, since you do not know exactly how your body will react. I suggest this because when I went to one of those Care Now clinics (I broke out after regular doctor office hours), they told me I would have a two hour wait. When they asked me why I was there (the rash was everywhere but my face), and I showed them the rash - they seemed very concerned and said I would be seen by the doctor next (after the boy who swallowed a toy- it was a busy night there!). They immediately started taking my pulse, and checking me out - everything seemed quite serious to them.

Go take care of yourself, and be well :)

As another poster suggested, stop taking that antibiotic as that is an allergic reaction. You don't mention which antibiotic, but I had a similar reaction to a penicillin based antibiotic. Call your doctor in the morning and tell them about your reaction. There are many non-penicillin based antibiotics that they can prescribe. I've had good luck with the macrolides, which are fairly broad spectrum and include Zithromax. There's even one called Zmax, that is very long lasting, so you only take one tablet!

Been there- done that! I had the same kind of reaction a few years ago after taking amoxicyllin even though I had taken it before. Apparently i developed an allergy to pencillin.
First stop taking the antibiotic and either call your doctor or pharmacy & tell them what happened so they can give you something different. Take Benedryl. It's an antihistimine & will help with the swelling & itching. It'll make you drowsy, but it works wonders! Also taking oatmeal baths and using a cortizone cream will help. It should get better within 24 hours, if it doesn't you may need to go see a doctor and they can presribe a steroid.
I feel for ya! Good luck!

Stop taking the meds immediately and call your doctor. I had this happen to me when I was pregnant. I called my Ob/Gyn, she saw me right away and wouldn't let me leave her office until she set-up and immediate appt. with a Dermatologist in her same building. He gave me a shot of predinisone and a 10-day regimen as well as some special lotion to rub on for immediate relief.

Also, remember whatever this antibiotic is so, as from now on you'll need to list it and the family of antibiotics associated with it as something you're allergic to (i.e. Sulfa-Drugs).

Hope this helps. L.

Hi K.. I had the same problem with a medicine I took post pregnancy. No problem before or even during pregnancy with this med, but hives from head to toe the last time I took it. Unfortunately for me it took a trip to the ER and 4 dr visits before I was diagnosed correctly. Ultimately I was put on heavy doses of antihistamines (sp?) and some other meds to control the itching. My eyes even swelled shut and my husband had to drive me to the doctor (dermatologist) who finally diagnosed me correctly.

I also soaked in Aveeno (you can buy it with the bath products or in the rx aisle). It's a powder that comes in a patch and you put it in your bathtub.

It took about 10 days for my symptoms to finally disappear and I had no scarring as I feared.

I really feel for you. I would suggest going to the doctor ASAP and don't leave until you have a firm diagnosis and a prescription!

You can take benadryl at the recommended dose and consider that antibiotic an allergy for the future. Also call your doctor and go to the er if you have trouble breathing or swelling in the face or neck.

K.,

First you need to call your doc and let them know you had a reaction so they can document it and prescirbe a diff antibiotic. Then you need to get to a Walgreen's and buy an antihistimine that works for hives. Ask the pharmacist to tell you what works best. That should alleviate/help control the hives until your body works through it.

Stop taking it immediately. See your doctor ASAP or go to the hospital depending on your pain level. It's possible for an allergic reaction to cause serious problems. An allergic reaction is what you are experiencing.
