My daughters have been getting the flu shot since they were 6 months old and neither one of them has ever had a negative reaction or gotten the flu from the shot. The flu shot in NOT a live virus and CANNOT give you the flu. However, every year healthy infants and children die from the flu. I will take a low grade fever and sore arm over death any day.

As with all medical interventions, consumers should do a risk benefit analysis before jumping in feet first. So good for you, for asking questions. Vaccination is a "very" controversial topic, thus information for and against is difficult to proccess because of biased sources on both sides. I'll try to provide you with some links to info. Please keep in mind, vaccination from the flu does not protect you from getting the common cold it only protects you from true influenza.

There are public health benefits to vaccination. However, one of the concerns that comes up most often is the Thimerosal (mercury) content of vaccines. Take a look at this calculator to determine intake. http://www.909shot.com/calc.htm

Ok, that's enough...

Sorry I didn't provide a clear cut answer. I wish there was one. As a healthcare provider, I'm asked this question quite often. Although I may be hanging out on a limb and going against the norm, I truely believe this is a personal choice and we have a responsibility to try to evaluate our personal risk of disease, prior to simply getting every vaccine that is offered to us. Please post again if you'd like anymore info.

R., the flu shot has thimerosal, which is MERCURY, in it. Most infant vaccines do not contain thimerosal anymore but any doctor will tell you that the flu shot still has it.

Some kids have no reactions to shots, some kids do. You just don't know. My older daughter had bad reactions to vaccines and the flu shot and she was recently diagnosed with autism. My younger one never had reactions (we're now taking a break on vaccines until she's bigger and stronger) and so far, she's neurotypical. And I pray she stays that way!!! I would never knowingly allow her to be injected with mercury. Some kids are just genetically "stronger" than others.

So for the parents who's children never had reactions, good for you. But you can't speak for all kids. So I would recommend holding off, especially on the flu shot, WHICH CONTAINS MERCURY. If you ask your doctor about the flu shot, he or she will say "it's just a little mercury." Disgusting.

honestly I am not quite sure what it is exactly I believe it gives them the flu to a certain degree but I could be WRONG. I wanted to reply because my kids are age 3 and 22mos and get the shot every year and NEVER have had any side effects at all. In fact they had the shot jus a month ago.

Ok - used to work in a hospital and had to get a flu shot (blech! - I hate shote, too!) Was told it CAN give you some flu like symptoms - like a runny nose a low grade fevor. It doesn't do the same for everyone. My mother-in-law gets one every year and gets a little bit sick after (fevor, runny nose, sore throat). My hubby gets one every year and nuthin'! So, it just kinda depends.

FYI - my pediatrician wants my 10 month to have it, but didn't say anything about the 6 year old. I'll double check that when I take younger in for the shot.

My son was one year old when I got him his flu shot last year. Actually at that age, it's a series of 2 shots. He was fine!!! I'm actually about to make appointments for him and his 6 month old baby brother for their flu shots. I have school age children, also, so I highly recommend getting your flu shots! I just read, however, if you'd like to do more research, that it is just at effective to get the shot by January. It's not necessary right now. She won't get sick, though. Maybe a slight fever, if any!

The best way to find out about vaccines is doing your own research. Here are some websites that can get you started and educated about the flu shot and other vaccines.

www.thinktwice.com

www.vaccination.inoz.com
Go to the articles link at the top of the page and it will go to a page that talks specifically about the flu shot. To answer your question more directly the "inactivatd or dead virus injected into the body can revert to it's former virulence because of the ingredient Beta-propiolactone this ingredient does not permanantly inactivate the virus.

I hope this will help answer your questions and blessings to you and your family.

I just went through this for myself yesterday. Well first off, no it won't make her sick because they don't give live flu vaccines anymore and the flu shot is to prevent influenza not the stomach flu. It is such a big misconception that when people hear the word flu they automatically think of the stomach flu, but the actual flu in influenza( cold like symptoms, but way worse). I would highly recommend it. I don't know the numbers, but a lot of people die from it every year and/or have hospital visits because it is so bad. I have always gotten them for my daughter, but never for myself until this year and I actually just git mine yesterday and I'm fine. And my daughter has had them for the last four years and never had a reaction or gotten sick from them. They recommend that anyone that has small children in the house, everyone on that house get one, especially pregnant women(hence that is why I had to get mine). It really is a misconception and if you have more serious questions I would call your doctor or talk to a nurse.

My son gets one every year (due to his CDH and VSD) and has never gotten sick. I have never had one myself. So I would recommend it. I would rather get the shot with the slight risk he might feel a little icky than risk him actually getting the full blown flu!

The flu shot uses a weaken version on a previous years flu. Yes, your daughter may get a little cold from the shot, the the actual flu she could potentially get could put her in the hospital. My daughters pediatrician recommends the parents get a flu shot as well.

The flu shot does not make your child sick. My son and I have both gotten a flu shot for the last 2 years and never had a bad experience. Some kids may have mild flu symptoms, like a cold. I have never heard of kids throwing up, that is not a symptom of the flu. No matter what, getting the shot is very important and could save your child's life.

Hi!
So far (knock on wood) my son, daughter and me get a flu shot, I have asthma and my son is leaning towards the asthma and my daughter is only 2 but, we have never had any trouble with it, our arm is sore for a couple of days, but it's a quick process, we are with Cigna and we go into the office line up see the nurse and we are on our way out the door, yep the kids cry but I think it's just the idea of the needle, I don't like shots either but I would rather be healthy then down with the hard flu! Not sure if my daughter will have to get one this year I need to call the Dr. and find out. Hope that this helps you with your decision. Now my husband and Dad aren't able to get the flu shot because they are both allergic to egg vacinations, so if they did recieve the flu shot they could die!!!

My son got his last year at 1 and the only thing that happened was he got a fever of 100. We just gave him tylenol for a couple of days to reduce the fever. His leg was also painful but the medication helped that too. It only last for a couple of days and was worth it because he ended up not getting very sick this year.
I also get one every year because I work in healthcare. The one year I didn't was the sickest I have been in the last 4 years. I recommend the shot but it is a personal choice.

Hello R.,
I have two daughters, 5 and 8 and have had them get the flu shot for about the past 3-4 years. They have never gotten sick from it. Their arm may get sore from the shot but that is really the only reaction either one has ever had. I, myself get the flu shot every year and have for about 10-15 years. I too get a sore arm with no other side effects. One thing I have noticed is when I get the flu shot, I am so much healthier thru the winter months. I won't even catch a cold. Two years ago I wasn't able to get a shot because of the shortage of the vaccine, and I caught several colds and viruses. I hope our experiances help you. Good luck!

My child is 17 mos and had a flu shot a week and a half ago and never got ill. As an infant she had the 2 shots and was never ill then either. It is my understanding that it is not a live virus. Your child's doctor may also carry the flu-mist nasal spray in addition to the shots. The flu poses the greatet threat to infants and elderly people so that is why we chose to vaccinate our child.
