Jury Duty and Difficult Pregnancy

I am 21 weeks pregnant and have been called to jury duty. I would have no problem with it, but I am very uncomfortable. You see I am measure 2 weeks bigger and have a very small frame to begin with. I am scheduled to serve on the 25 of January and on Jan. 14th is when my next doc appointment is and I will know more then. Do you think that qualifies me to call them and try to get out of it?

What can I do next?

Get a doctor note. I too was called in to Jry Duty while pregnant. My biggest concern was that I had to pee ALL the time :) and I didn't think I could make it through a trial :). The doctor wrote me an excuse and I got out of it. I think he blamed it on a cold or something.

You can get out of it if you already have a child that you are responsible for the care of, and also probably with a medical note from your doctor. It really depends on the case (is it going to be a long trial or is this a one week deal). But look at your jury notice and see if you can go online or by phone and be cleared. I know Tarrant County is online and I got my clearance in just a few days.

Same thing happened to me when I was pregnant with my 2nd child and was so uncomfortable(he ended up weighing almost 10lbs.). I live in Denton Co. and since I was the primary caregiver to my older son who was 3(stay at home mom), it qualified me to be able to skip it that one time. Of course, I was never called before and haven't been called back since. Now that I've said that, I'll get a letter this week, I'm sure!

I was exempt from jury duty because I had a child at home and being a SAHM, no daycare...and I was preggo!
You are exempt in Collin County if you have a under school age child at home and no day care.

You should be able to call the court that called you and get things postponed. You can postpone 3 times before serving. I would also talk to the DR and see if he writes a note or contacts someone if you could be removed for the next year. IF you do have to go, just claim medical reasons for not serving on the jury. Good Luck.

I think if you get a Dr. Note then you go to the court house that morning and talk to the judge. I would do it in person, so they czan see you are pregnant and not just trying to get out of it. It should work.

Get a letter from your dr. I'll bet that fixes it.

I was in the same exact situation. You'll have to show up of course. But when you get there just tell them that your due any day and they will release you. They don't want someone that may go into labor while in court. That was 5 years ago for me and I still haven't been called back. Also, make sure to where your tightest maternity shirt.

You are exempt if you have small children who would otherwise have no one to care for them while you were in Jury duty. My DH was out of town during my scheduled jury duty time, and he's the SAHD, so I was exempt b/c I had to stay home with them.

At least in Collin Co., you can reschedule once with no problem. However, you're likely to get rescheduled for later in your pregnancy, when you're likely to be even more uncomfortable.

Absolutely, yes. Call them, and if they want a note from your dr. they will ask you to do so. You don't have to wait til your next appt. Call the court clerk, see what they need to excuse you then have your dr.'s nurse fax them the note, if they even need it. The paperwork you get in the mail looks very menacing, and it should as it is everyone's civic duty, however there are legit exceptions. Your case is definitely one of them.

I got a jury summons when I was pregnant, and although I would have been happy to serve (it was more comfortable than work :-)) it seems to me like I got excused b/c I was pregnant. Like the other poster said, call the number and talk to them. It seems like there is also a clause excusing you if you have small children at home. . . .

If your doctor feels you should not attend jury duty, they can either give you a note or fax a note to the courts. You should be able to locate a fax number on the jury summons.

I would check with your Dr. If you are expecting along jury duty, then it might not be good for you to sit that long. He should be able to give you a medical excuse. Congrats on pregnancy

I'm sure your doc can give you an excuse! Just ask on the 14th and then call the court. I think they are pretty easy on this kind of thing. They want people who can actually serve!

I have always found the courts to be very kind and understanding. Just call the number and ask what you should do. They may just want you to reschedule your duty or bring a Dr. note.

There isn't a lawyer in the entire US who would sit a pregnant juror if the case had any violence involved! As a mom, we are pre-programmed to protect children and when your pregnant, all women are potential victims...so, show up and get your juror card stamped, hopefully they won't call your name again soon :) The child exemption only goes until they are 10..so I'm up the next time I'm called!
