JFF - WORST First Day on the Job?

When I was younger and working as a temp, I accidentally answered the phone with the name of the company's competitor. Of course you have to know the owner of the company was on the other end of the line! I am ashamed to think of it, even after all these years..

Do you have a story you are willing to share to make me feel better about that slip-up?

What can I do next?

I was a waitress at Bob Evans. They had one of those little fridges behind the counter, and I opened it quickly to get something and it totally wacked my new manager in the balls. Needless to say, very embarrassing first day.

In high school I thought I was interviewing for a job in a jelly/jam store. When I got to work I found I had gotten a job at the jelly factory. They put me on the line flipping over jars that were just sterilized and were about 200 degrees each. I was getting blisters on my finges from the burning hot jars after an hour. It was horrid. I snuck out the back door at our first break and never went back.

Got rear ended on the way to the first day at a job and had to call and say I was gonna be late!!! But I did keep the job for 23 years!!! LOL Another job earlier.....old man walked up on the waitress line and into our kitchen at Shoneys Restaurant. He preceded to take a piece of bread out of the bag and start eating it....I said....excuse me sir...can I help you. He just grumpled real low...no. I went and got our manager....she said...it's okay...he does that all to time...too cheap to eat up the profits...he was eating the heel of the loaf of bread. I said...who is he....she said that is Leon Shoenbaughn...his nickname when he played football in college was Shoney. He is the founder of Shoneys Restaurant. Wow....I was in aw!!!

It was New Years Eve and the first time I worked for this restruant ( I knew the owner and while a small place it was book solid from 7pm-11pm that night) We were so busy and everyone was running around, while I was making battered shrimp and heating the prime rib, I all the sudden out of the blue got sick to my stomach out of no where and wasn't able to hold it back I threw up all over the floor. ( Thankfully I missed all food and the fryers) then before I could get to the back door I did it again. After 10 mins outside throwing up he came up and handed me $30 and said go home. I felt so bad because we had about 20 orders hanging there and now everyone had to work harder with out me there... plus someone else had to clean up my "mess".

That was also my last day...

Now years later when I see him he gives me a hard time about it, but at first he was pretty mad about it.

My first day as an art director intern at an ad agency, my boss made me take all of his awards off the wall, and take the frames apart and clean the inside of the glass. Guess he really wanted to make sure I noticed how awesome he was. (Jerk!)

Cute question. I just hope as we all grow older and may become bosses ourselves that we recall our little slipups and not treat anyone else too badly (no matter the age).

I went to work as a computer tech at a sports company. While I was compiling the database, which was full of sports acronyms, I asked my boss. "MLB... that's Major League Basketball, right?" He just laughed. Then shared it with everyone else in the office later much to my embarrassment. I was only one of two women who worked in that entire department, and the other one was up to bat for the other team.

I don't know much about sports because I'm not interested in them, but for those who like me didn't know, MLB is Major League Baseball, NBA is Basketball, NFL is Football and NHL is Hockey.

I sure enforced the blonde stereotype that day.

At that same job a month later I reorganized the DVD backups cabinet. The doors were off kilter and didn't like to shut properly. I couldn't get it closed so I shut it with some force and a shower of empty DVD spindles rained down on me. I forgot we stacked the empties up on top before I shook the whole thing trying to get it closed. I shared an office with my direct supervisor and he got a good laugh.

Summer job during college. Packing plant for fixtures.
My foreman (foreWOMAN), Blanche, (yes--Blanche!) hated college kids ("Like THAT's going to help you out in the future...what a WASTE of money and time....")
You could SMELL her before you could see her.
I'd get a whiff of the Aqua Net on her beehive about 5 minutes before I would see her.
No lie.

My first day as a nanny I was watching a little girl who was 12 months. She cried from the time I got there (at 7am) until her mother got home at 5pm. NOTHING I did worked. I sang, I read stories, I put her in the bath, I rocked her, I fed her, I danced, I took her outside...omg, it was awful. I was a wreck and so was she. The second day she only cried for for 7 hours. :)
I stayed with that family for 3 year and was soon "mommy yoya" to sweet Sarah. It all worked out in the end.

I had a 45 minute drive to my first ____@____.com years old. It was at a retail establishment. We had zero training on how to cashier and I was put on a register where I had to literally hand-key every single piece of merchandise. At the the end of the night my till was off a bit and the manager yelled at me. I then politely told him that perhaps if I did not have to hand-key everything, including using the credit card copy machines perhaps my mind would've been extra focused on making sure there wasn't a few cents missing. I offered to pay out of my own pocket and was declined. Needless to say I was awesome at that job as far as doing everything by hand but that manager and I never got along.
