JFF: Who "Controls" the Thermostat in Your Home?

Updated on July 09, 2012

I'm always cold, hubby is always warm. He thinks DD is always warm, I think she's always cold. Finally, she is at the age where she can tell us. Whew!

Yet, even before DD, my hubby always controlled the thermostat. His philosophy is "I can always put more clothes on in the winter/" And the summer for that fact. And I do wear sweatshirts in the A.C.

On a money-saving note, I'd say we'd save more money if we laid off the extreme A.C. and heat.

So who is the thermostat captain in your home?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Likin' the diverse responses. Since DH manages the gas/electric bills, I guess I'll let this grievance go. At least I won't be blamed for over-the-top bils!

My husband is always wanting to save money, so he tweaks the thermostat away from my settings, both winter and summer. I generally tweak it back again if I can't stand his idea of cool enough or warm enough. However, we'll be getting better windows for the house some time this year, and that should help us both be happy.

Mostly myself, but that is because I am home all day and my son and I are simmilar in liking it cold. Daddy tends to just put on a sweater while we are half nakked and the house is steadily at 72.

I do as I am the one who knows what we pay out for all the bills. In summer 80, in winter66. Yes huge extreme but the bills used to be around 450 for electric in summer and 700.00 for gas in winter. With these temps we are at 140.00 summer and 200 in winter. Huge savings.for putting on a jacket snuggling under a comforter or changing to a tank top.

We have a programmable thermostat. :) My ex was always too stupid to program it so even when he turned it down it always reverted back to what I prefer. My husband is more than capable of reprogramming the thermostat but he is happy with where it is at.

In practice anyone in our family is more than welcome to change it if they are hot. I have been known to turn it down if I am on a cleaning frenzy. It always goes back to the program. :)

That would be ME-the heavily pregnant lady who gets very snarky if I can't cool down-it's 100 degrees outside and my house is not cool enough-I guess the AC can't handle it. It's 80 in here and I am broiling on the couch contemplating ice cream and driving an hour to church just to cool down.

I control the thermostat. I am freezing in the winter, and it's super cheap to heat houses here. In the summer, I HAVE to control the thermostat. I can't let my husband, because we'd have a $500 electricity bill!! It is HOT here in the summer, so it's tempting to have it running constantly. I try to keep our electric bill around $150-175 during the summer, so I have to be firmly in charge. My husband is more warm natured then me, but if he's hot we have great fans.

Yea, we fight over this too.
My husband and kids want to walk around the house in their t shirts and shorts when it's cold, so they turn up the heat. I'm willing to put on the heavy socks, long pants and warm sweater/sweatshirt BEFORE turning up the heat (makes sense, right?)
Same with summer. I will wear the bare minimum but once it hits a certain temperature I will turn that AC on!

we agree. set at a certain point during the day when no one is home, then down much cooler at night for sleeping. we are cold sleepers. it's funny on weekends we will take turns creeping it up during the day, and then creeping it back down in the evening.

We don't have a captain of the thermostat here. We alter it as we feel it is needed.

Typically, we leave it on 76-78 in summer but lately we've had it on 72-74 with the heat. So far our electric bill is still very reasonable, just over $200 for a 4000+ SF house with 2 AC units. We do have a very efficient system plus we are on an electrical contract and we locked in at a low rate.

Before we ripped everything out (4 yrs ago or so) and upgraded everything that was put in when we built the home in 2000 as far as AC, Heating, furnaces, ductwork and added insulation... it was average to get a $700+ electric bill. Now our water bill hits $700 in August.

i am so NOT the captain of this ship. I am freezing right now, and mad as heck at all the money wasted, while he isn't even home, but he's got me so worried that turning the ac on and off is worse than just suffering, what a poo.

not worth the fight though.

I send the money to the power company, I control the T-stat. We used to keep the T-stat at 68 - 69 degrees during the summer. It is July and we have kept it at 75. We use tower fans and it makes a difference.

We compromise on 74 degrees, day and night. If it was up to my husband it would be 72 (and he does sneek it sometimes) and I would keep it at 76. When I am home that is what it's usually on anyway. I am curious what others keep their air on.

Winter we keep the thermostat on 66-68 during the day and 60 at night unless the woodburning stove is on. Then it's nice and toasty.

We don't have any air conditioning. Our thermostats are set-back ones, so you can program them ahead of time for the temperature to go up or down. Neither of us is in absolute control. When it's the season that heat is used, if one of us is hot or cold, we adjust a little. The kids (17 and 13) are not allowed to adjust the thermostats.

Our apt's thermostat is pretty efficient, and the windows and doors are energy efficient also, thankfully.
That said, both my husband and I have more or less the same comfort temperatures, and so we don't fight over it. Phew, thank God for small mercies! :)

No one. We live in AZ. Its HELL hot here. Since we moved in this house 5 years ago, the a/c was set to 78 and its been on 24/7 since then. I think only one winter did we have to turn the heater on. Otherwise, if one of us is either hot or cold, you put on long sleeves or turn a fan on. But the thernmostat stays where it is so we don't have $440 electric bills in the summer anymore. =)

I don't have a thermostat. I live in a condo building built in the 1920s and the hot water radiator heat is controlled building-wide. It's fine in the winter, but the spring and fall when the temps are in-between it can get pretty chilly in here. We have warm throws to snuggle under.

In the summer, I have a small window AC for the bedroom but I don't turn it on unless it gets higher than 80-82 in here and it doesn't cool off at night. I have windows on three sides, lots of shade, and a lake breeze, so I get by fine with a fan most days. And I've become a fan of loose-fitting sundresses.

This last week we had two 100 degree days (first time in over 20 years we've had two in one summer) so the AC was on! Most days I would rather have the windows open, though. We wait all winter here to open the windows and then some of my neighbors close up and leave on the AC all summer, never will understand that.

No one! If someone is hot, we turn it down a degree or two. If someone is cold, we turn it up. It stays on 77 most of the time in the summer and we have the ceiling fans going all the time to keep the air moving. If we are leaving for several hours or overnight, we turn it up.

When I was married...Me :)

I was the only one who read the manual on how to program the sucker.

Also, usually the only one home.

My ex was ALWAYS hot (I've woken up to the air conditioner on, and windows open with 6" of snow in front of the window). I'm always cold. We had separate blankets... Me'self 2 layers of down certified to -20, himself a 'heavy' quilt that I had made for him out of no heat Fenton fabric (he liked weight, but even in the snowy room ... In just boxers was fussing at me to turn the thermostat down. <rolls eyes>

In all fairness, his parents used to lock him and his sister down in the (unheated) basement in the middle of winter for weeks on end in shirtsleeves and little if any food. So his body is wired a little weird.

Me? I grew up in 100 degree winters, so I'm set for deserts & jungles. And this 50 degree business kills me. (Ahem. I LOVE snow. In no small part because of snow SUITS, and roaring fires. And temp below 30 is 'dry' like I like it).

So I figured if he was going to always be hot, regardless of temp, at least I could be comfy!

I put in a super efficient AC, heating system three years ago, new dual pained windows the year before and it was money so well spent. Our summer electric bills were close to $600, now about $200.

My office is at home and I'm not going to be uncomfortable if I am working from home that day. I can't sleep if it is too hot either.

My ex-husband is great but he won't turn on the AC or heater...ever!! I went to his house a week and a half ago to pick up his dog so I could babysit her while he was out of town....so hot inside the house. I have to laugh, he was exactly this way in 1984.
