Hello. My friend is the grandma of a baby girl. We've been invited to her baby naming ceremony. I've never attended one before, and am interested to experience it. My question is... do I bring a gift? I would think so? How much? What is appropriate?

What can I do next?

I've only attended one, but it reminded me quite a bit of a Baptism. They rabbi will pray for the child and her parents and will ask the parents what name they would like to give her. It's a very meaningful and pretty ceremony.

We gave a check for $50 and a small piece of jewelry. Most people did something similar. Some did large checks and no jewelry. Some did jewelry and no check, but those were the most common gifts. Again, very similar to a Baptism or Christening!

A card with a little cash or a gift is nice. No set amount. Whatever you would like to give. The number 18 is significant in Judaism and therefore gifts like $18, $36, $54 and so on are a nice touch. The 18 represents the numerical equivalent to a hebrew word that means "life." I would not worry about jewelry. Anything you would give any new baby is okay.

I was going to say mostly was Krista said. For baby boys, Jewish people do a Briss (not sure on spelling??) but since there's nothing to 'briss' for girls they do a naming ceremony.

I would do cash or a small piece of jewelry if this is a close friend. Anything would appreciated I'm sure, even if it was a little toy or something! My daughter got an engraved silver rattle at her Christening and I let her play with it and she loved it! Now we'll be able to keep it for her babies!

I agree with Patty W. so if you want to give money, any amount to do with the number 18 is thoughtful & shows you've done your research!! :) A check for $18 or $36 with a classic book (Goodnight Moon, Guess How Much I Love You, anything by Eric Carle) is always a nice gift that will get used over & over again. Enjoy!!

A gift similar to at a Baptism or Christening is appropriate. You can get a silver (plated) cup or other item with the baby's name engraved if you like. Many jewelery stores have them and there is a mall keepsake type store too. I still have the little cup I got as a baby.
