My 10 year old daughter is breaking out from her costume jewelry necklaces. She loves to wear jewelry, but isn't ready for gold. Does anyone have any suggestions on what metals are hypo-allergenic and where I might buy it? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

I actually have jewelry allergies as well. I only get it from necklaces. Unfortunately for me that included gold and silver although for some people those are okay. The only thing I'm not allergic to on my neck are hemp or anything with a string-like material. Hope this helps.

I have the same thing. It is the nickle in the metal of the jewlery. They sale some nice and not so expensive hypo-allergenic Jewlery at Wal~Mart and other shops at the mall that is not going to cost you an arm and a leg. You can also coat the back of the jewlery with clear nail polish it gives a protective barrier so that it doesn't touch her skin.

Hi. I have the same problem. If my rings aren't sterling silver i get funny colors left around my fingers. With the earrings I have to wear sterling silver or the ones with the surgical steel posts. I go to claire's and get theres when its on sale. Walmart sells theres cheap at times. My sister cant wear fake necklaces. Shes gets this brown or gold or green marks around her neck. I was able to find good deals off ebay for some. I have my eyebrow pierced and the body jewelery works good. Good luck.

What about beaded jewelry? There bracelets where each bead tells a different part of a story are huge here. Other than that, sterling silver, gold or platinum. A lot of the costume jewelry uses nickel. Clear nail polish on the inside of those rings may help some.

A tip if you have the time is to coat them in clear nail polish! I imagine you could probably try clear shelac from a craft store, but we always use clear nail polish, it always seems to do the trick!

I am not a big jewelry person, but my skin is highly sensitive to nickel (especially belt buckles) I have not researched which metals are hypo-allergenic because I am sure they are much pricier than I can afford. A friend of mine told me to try and paint the buckles with clear nail polish, and I haven't had any reaction since. I don't know if this helps at all, but it has helped me greatly

When I was little I had the same problem. Here are two suggestions. Walmart has an economical line of hypo-allergenic jewelry, or my mom used to put a couple of coats of clear nail polish on my costume jewelry, this put a barrier between me and the metal (you will probably find out it is a reaction to nickle). Hope this is helpful!

If this continues when she gets into normal jewelry, consider not using gold. I know it is expensive, but Platinum is usually pretty good. I am sensitive to cheap jewelry as well. I can't wear earrings unless the whole thing is make of implant grade surgical steel ( like they use for most tongue barbells and other body jewelry.) or Platinum. I break out in funny blotches from yellow gold. try finding earrings from stores or piercing parlors that sell surgical steel. However, stay away from places Like Hot Topic and PacSun. They tend to sell cheap plated jewelry as well.

Good Luck!

Hi D.~
I'm very sensitive to jewelry also. I learned a trick along the way that has been helpful. You can put a thin coat of clear nail polish over the part of the jewelry that touches the skin. It prevents the metal from touching the skin and becoming irritated.
Good Luck!

She might be allergic to the nickel in the costume jewelry. I also have an allergy to nickel. I can wear the nickel-free jewelry they sell at Target. They have a big selection and it's inexpensive.

Hi D.! Sorry to hear about your daughter's allergy to her costume jewelry. Sterling silver would probably work best for her. I happen to make jewelry and have a kid's line (which is all sterling silver components). I have pre-made designs & also do custom work (to match outfits, etc.) If there's anything I can help you with, please let me know. I'd be more than happy to e-mail some photos of my designs if you'd like. Warmest regards, G.

Hi D.-
Most likely your daughter's allergy is to nickel. Most costume jewelry contains nickel as this enables the product to have such a great price point. I am a consultant for Cookie Lee Jewelry- our jewelry does contain nickel but the prices are very reasonable. We have some really great pieces in the little girl's line (under $16). We also have a product called Skin Guard-you apply it to any part of the jewelry that would come into contact with the skin, even the post on earrings. I would love to send you a catalog and help you solve this problem. Please feel free to contact me at ____@____.com
Hope this helps!

I have this problem myself and from personal experience the only things that work for me are Real Gold even 10K is fine, Sterling Silver, or Stainless Steel. (even if it says hypoallergenic but is not one of the above I will have a reaction)

At 10yrs old if she likes costume jewelery she may LOVE the real stuff "like mommy has". I know I have purchased gold earrings relatively cheap (between $10 & $15), My son just bought his "girl" a bracelet in sterling for $8, and my watch is stainless (that one was a little pricey).

Try one piece to start and see how she handles the responsibility, then go from there.

Good luck.

They make jewelry that is "nickel free" - and is relatively expensive. I think with cheap jewelry that a nickel allergy is the most common kind. They used to sell these at Kohl's when I worked there. Other than that I'm not sure of any others that aren't expensive.

A word to the wise.....a lot of cheap custome jewelry has lead in it. Especially, do not trust jewelry from fle markets. A lot of items shipped into the United States does not follow our guide lines for lead levels in a lot of products. I beleive it was 20/20 that I watched the report on childrens jewelry, even those little rings/braclets etc in gum ball machines.
