IVF Mom's

Okay IVF moms out there...I have a question for you. Did you take a pregnancy test BEFORE going in for the blood test at the doctor's office? I had 2 blastocysts (one grade A) put back last Wednesday and my blood test isn't until this Friday. I'm driving myself nuts thinking about it every minute of the day. I'm trying to keep myself busy but a part of me just wants to take that pregnancy test that's in my cabinet but I'm not sure if I should. What if I get an false positive due to the hCG Ovidril injection from 2 weeks ago? If you took a test, how many days before your appt did you do it and was the result correct?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Well, I ended up taking 2 negative HPT's before my blood test. Unfortunately, my blood test was negative also.

Hi C.. I did take a pregnancy test, I believe it was the day before the pregnancy test at the Dr's office. It was positive and I did end up being pregnant with twins! I just knew I was pregnant. But I really did try to temper my feelings and not get too, too excited until it was confirmed by the Dr's office. :)
Hope that helps.

I took a pregnancy test 5 days before going in for my blood test. My husband and I both thought we should wait for the blood test but I could not wait. It was positive. We are having our first child early Nov. I will say a prayer for you and your husband. I have not forgotten about all the anxiety that comes with infertility. I am so gald you have a supportive and understanding husband. I think that really makes a difference. Let us know the results. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask me. Good Luck!

I was a gestational surrogate, so I went through the transfer but not the egg retrieval. I did SEVERAL hpts because I'm very impatient. I got my first very very faint positive six days past a blast transfer.

Here are some links from a surrogacy message board which list members' test results after transfer, beta numbers, etc (the links say "tiny url" because the links themselves were sooo long that I went to tinyurl.com to shorten them).

Best of luck to you!!!! :)

I took a HPT with both of my IVFs and they were both positive, I could not wait. I did it a couple of days before. My FMU was around 2am so that is when I took the test to get the most accurate reading. My darlings are 3 and 1. Let us know how your results and best of luck. I am praying for a positve for you.

Hi C.,

I've been in your shoes a few times now and I know what that anticipation is like. Oh it's so nerve-racking!!

With our first IVF attempt, I took a test that morning of my blood test and it was negative. My blood test was also negative. I steered away from jinxing myself the second time, and fortunately we were pregnant. The third time I skipped it and we were pregnant. Something didn't feel right in the beginning stages of the pregnany though, so I took a home test and the positive was faint. When I went in for my 7 week sonogram, we found out we were pregnant with twins but neither of them survived and we miscarried. So in our fourth attempt, I didn't take a test either and we are pregnant with our seoncd child, less than 9 weeks to go!

Just wait until your blood test if you can. That way you don't get any false hope or premature disappointment. Will you have your blood test results back on the same day? Just keep yourself busy between now and then. I know it's hard but try, just a few more days! Good luck!!!!!

PS...don't bother taking the prego test, the bloodwork is the first to know...

Hi there! I did IVF four years ago and from what I remember the blood test can detect your pregnancy much earlier and is more sensitive to the ever changing levels of medication your body is going through right now that might give you false results from an OTC pregnancy test....I would wait but I completely know where you're coming from if you can't stand it any longer and do one before Friday! I could not even take the call from the nurses on the blood test results, I made them call my husband :) Best of luck to you, it's such a roller coaster but hopefully you'll look back one day and it will be all so worth it!

I had IVF in 2006 and took an EPT test at home a day or so before going to the doctor. It came out positive. I asked the nurse at my clinic how reliable the home tests were and she said "very". She said that if my home test came back positive then I was pregnant. The nurse also stated that home tests these days were very accurate as they test for HPT in the urine. It would be more likely to have a false negative than a false positive as it is not as sensitive as the blood tests. Good luck!

FYI, I got pregnant after 2 IVFs. My 1st RE told me after my 1st IVF failure that I had a 5-8% chance of future IVFs working. I didn't give up but switched REs.
