IUD Malfunction

Has anyone had a problem with an IUD. I have been suspecting that I am having a problem with mine. In fact, I think I may have had a mischarge 2 months ago and may be pregnant now. I really don't know, and I'm pretty scared. I was told when I got it that it was 99% effective and good for 10 years. My daughter is 21 months old and I wasn't planning on having a new baby soon.
I just moved to SLC in June and don't know any of the doctors here.
I was just curious if anyone might have some advice.
Thanks. T.

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone for your compassionate advice. I did see a doctor and I was found not to be pregnant, but having some major hormone changes, is what the doctor rationalized the symptoms to. The more I find out about the medical practice, the more I realize that it is still a practice and educated guess work. My body has leveled out for the moment... thank goodness.

I used the mirena IUD last year. After about six months of loving it, I started having lower abdominal pain, after 4 months of pain my Doctor finally removed it. I still had pain for another two months then it went away. In that time I had several doctors appointments and ultrasounds but nothing was found to be wrong. I really think it was the IUD.

If you think you have gotten pregnant with the IUD, I would suggest having it taken out, and using another type of birth control. But because of my experience, that may be a little extreme. I would definately see a doctor. I know of a good one in Orem, but not any in Salt Lake. Good luck, Lori

Trudi,
If you are having concerns it's better to get checked then to suffer the consequenses! You can go to any planned parenthood and have it checked. I have a great OB/GYN Dr. Dennis Hughes at Old Farm Obstetrics.
About 5 years ago I had an IUD and my body rejected it. It was the kind with copper and come to find out I was "allergic" to it...It was horrible...heavy bleeding and major cramps for almost 10weeks straight. I finally had it removed and everything stopped. I now have the new one called Mirena and that has been WONDERFUL, infact I stopped having my periods all together. YAY!

I hope that helps. Atleast go have it checked!

Trudi,

I had an IUD partially expelling itself and got pregnant. An IUD, as part of it's function is not just birth control, as I found out later. It is to irritate the uterus to cause a spontaneous abortion.

IUD's are not fail-safe, as I said before, I not only got pregnant with an IUD...but my mother also had an IUD when she conceived me.

I know of a couple of great OB/GYN's in the area. Contact me if you would like to get a referral.

I hope I was of some help!

I considered an IUD until I found out that it doesnt prevent pregnancy, rather it contaminates the uterus so your body miscarriages instead, and it also causes worse cramping (the Dr told me) because it is so rejected by the uterus,
Check out this site and talk to your Dr. about Mirena (IUD) Birth control,
http://www.mirena-us.com/index.html?C=&c=S1
"Mirena intrauterine contraceptive is a tiny, T-shaped piece of plastic that is placed into the uterus by your healthcare professional. Over time, the Mirena intrauterine contraceptive (IUC) slowly releases small amounts of the hormone levonorgestrel into the lining of your uterus."
I love the Mirena, I have light-spotting periods, and maybe one every couple months that lasts maybe a day, I never use more than one tampon per period, cramping is short lived and my body's not making babies to loose babies.(that was the best part) BUT..take a valume or something before you get it placed, (lol) it hurts like CrAzY!

If you have anymore questions, let me know.

I would go to a doctor right away! Depends on where you live for doctors. I'm sure others on this site will be helpful with who to see. I see Dr. Mark Curtis. He's always been very nice. He's at the ICH Medical Tower in Murray off State and about 6000 South.
Hope this helps.

Trudi,
I have had my IUD for a year and a half and I love it and have had no problems, however, my sister has had 3 IUDs and got pregnant with her 3rd child with an IUD and has had 3 miscarriages with the one she has now. I don't know if this is common of the IUD, but I have talked to quite a few women who have had this problem. For me, I have felt a few times like i may be pregnant, but I think it was caused by my lack of period and it's my body's way of dealing without it. The suggestion from one of the other moms about Pioneer Valley Hospital and free pregnancy tests is true, and my OB is at Pioneer Valley Hospital in West Valley. His name is Steven Thackeray and he is the sweetest man and most caring doctor I have ever met. He delivered my son, 2 of my sister's 3 babies, as well as a few friends' children that I have referred to him. The nurses and doctors there are great at helping you apply for Baby your Baby, Medicaid, etc. They are genuinely nice people. Good luck to you and I wish you the best!

I am a 27 year old mother to an 18 month old son, and a 7 year old step-daughter. I absolutely LOVE being a mom, although at times it can be hectic with working full-time, going to school part-time, and raising a little guy, but luckily, I have my wonderful husband of 3 years to help me.

I have an IUD also, and I love it. THe Dr that "Installed" it is named Michael Twede. He is very professional and I really liked him as an OBGYN. He is located in Sandy at the SLC Womens Center. His number is ###-###-####.

Good Luck with everything and it is better that you notice something is going on with you than wait until it is serious.

The first thing I would do is got get a couple of pregnancy tests from the local dollar store. Take one and see what it says. If it comes back positive, and you want a professional test done, Pioneer Valley Hospital in West Valley does them fro free, you just have to call and get the hours that they are open.

If both tests come back positive, then (last I knew) the nurse at Pioneer Valley can help you get started with the Baby Your Baby and Medicaid programs, if you don't already have insurance.

You also have to remember that 99% and 100% are different figures. If the IUD slipped, or moved any, it would most likely decrease its effectiveness.
