IUD Advice

I have a Mirena IUD, and I LOVE it. I've had it for a year now, and I have not one complaint about it. The first month I had it in, I did spot off and on, and around the time of my period I had wicked cramps. But the 2nd month I spotted a bit around my period, and by the 4th month I didn'th ave a period at all. A year into it, I haven't had a period in 7/8 months, no cramping or spotting, can't even tell its there.

I had very light periods before my boys were born. Even between them, my periods went back to normal, but after my youngest was born and weaned at 18 months, my period was awful! Cramps, and very heavy, I was tired and had a headache.... awful.

I got the Mirena for birth control, but honestly if we never choose to have more children and my husband has a vasectomy, I will probably continue to use it for its period control. I didn't gain weight either. In fact I've been loosing weight with diet and exercise very steadily.

Insertion was the most uncomfortable, it was like a big contraction, and then its over. It needs to be placed while you are on your period, which is kind of skeevy but really wasn't that bad, and it was very quick. My doctor had it in in less than 30 seconds.

Good luck in your choice, but I have had a very positive experience with mine.

ask your obgyn about a thermoablation instead. Cost is alot cheaper, also the iud is a resevoir for infection so if you are prone to having any urinary tract infections, bladder infections they are a little more risky.

i have a mirena. i bled for a month or two VERY lightly and have not gotten a period since (6 months later).

Hey there sweet woman ... I'm glad you are asking .. wish my news were more encouraging. I know that IUD's have changed a lot from 35 years ago when I had one put in. The Dalkon Shield which killed hundreds of thousands of women and deleteriousness effected many of which I was one. Within 6 months, I collapsed on Christmas day and had immediate surgery that started out as exploratory and ended up with them taking out as much of reproductive system as possible while still leaving me fertile. removed one ovary and tube. Everything else was a mass of infection that lasted another 15 years and about killed me 3 times. I would HIGHLY recommend not going through that one. I know the Dalkon Shield was a major issue not the principle of the device ... but maybe.

Turns out my daughter became a OB-GYN - wonder why... There must be kinder ways for your body than to do this. Sorry for the bad report but I would have wanted someone to tell me.

i have an iud. i had my first one for five years and now i'm on my second. and i love it for period control. i'm 45 years old and probably starting menopause but the iud is also great for pms too!!! i didnt' gain weight and don't have the crying jags and my periods are down to 2 days of spotting!!!

I just got mine taken out last week, b/c we are thinking of baby #2. No problems with getting it installed(contractor in me talking), but when I had it taken out, increase in cramming and spotting and I have been extremely tired. Don't know if it all relates to the IUD or not. I am feeling better now, a week after it is out.

I have an IUD and can't wait to convince hubby to get a vasectomy so I can get it removed! Since you are looking at it for regulation, I'll share my not-so-regular experience.

I had a period 5 times in the course of 4 weeks...2 days here, 3 days there...it sucks! I've had it for going on 4 years now and have had nothing but problems the entire time. The only things that's "regular" is that it's UNregular!

I typically don't like to be the "negative-nellie" but in this case, I would not recommend it to anyone I know. That's just my 2 cents.
