Hey Moms-

I have been having an itchy scalp, mostly on the back of my head since last September. I am now 11 weeks pregnant with Baby #2 and it seems to be getting a lot worse. Heat seems to make it worse (hot water in shower, hair dryer). I have tried the Scalpicin T, heating up olive oil and doing a "hot oil treatment" (I found that online as one solution) and not washing my hair every day. Nothing seems to be helping. I am going out of my mind with the itching. . .I have been up all night with it and need some help! Any suggestions???

What can I do next?

I have had the same problem and mine seems to be stress related. I have switched my shampoo/conditioner to an Aveda line. They also have an oil for scalp problems that works wonders. It is available in salons. After a couple of washes and applications, my scalp is much better. Good luck.

Try a 2% zinc shampoo, like DHS, I get it at some non-chain drugstores. REdken also makes a zinc solution you can target just on the itchy spots. Give it about a week and if it doesn't go away, then go to a dermatologist.

Hi D.. I had the same problem for awhile and I started using Head & Shoulders shampoo and haven't had a problem since. I generally just buy the store brand since it's a lot cheaper and works the same. Worth a try - I know it seems like a simple solution!

We suffer from itchy scalp here but usually in the wintertime when the air is so dry. We use Neutrogena T-Gel shampoo. It has a funky smell but it works better than anything else that I have ever tried. I always keep a bottle in the house.

How often do you wash your hair? If you wash every day your washing too much. Your suppose to wash your hair every other to every 3 days. Try not to wash your hair for a couple of days and see if that helps. Also use a moisterizing hair shampoo and conditioner. Don't use clear shampoos. Use something for permed or died hair to give you moister Paul mitchel has some good products. Try to stay away from hair spray and gels or mouses. You might be allergic to one of those. So if you use hair products cut them out and see. There is perscription cream you canget from a dermatologist for drie scalp too. Good Luck!!!

Trader Joe's has a Tea Tree Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. I love it, it's inexpensive, and it helped my itch! Also try rinsing in cooler water.
Good luck,

HI D.,
Since you are pregnant, please be careful what you use- everything that goes on your body, goes to your baby, too. I am glad to see many people recommended safe, natural treatments, like coconut oil, tea tree oil, and Jason is a good brand. Many commercial personal care products are loaded with toxic chemicals, so try to avoid these. You may be reacting to some of the chemicals in the shampoo or the strong fragrances which they now put in- all of these artificial fragrances contain a nasty chemical, called phthalates, which is actually a hormone disruptor- it is blocking especially testosterone, necessary for the masculinization of boys. Another good line of products is made by Shaklee, so you can trust a few companies out there to make good products. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Good Luck,
M.

I've used extra virgin coconut oil for my sons itchy scalp, it's done WONDERS. Stopped the itching and healed up the damage he had done by scratching in no time flat!
I don't use it as a wash out treatment on him (although i've done it for my hair, can you say SUPER SOFT???) I just dab a bit on and leave it.

I'm allergic to darn near everything, so my doctor suggested Neutrogena T-Gel Extra Strength after I had tried some expensive salon products which I found I was allergic to and made my head litterally break out in bleeding sores. The T-Gel helped heal it up and stop the itching. Whenever my head starts to feel a bit itchy, I just use the T-Gel on it and it stops. Neutrogena's line of products are hypoallergenic for people like me who are sensitive to lots of stuff. I didn't know that till I had that mishap with the expensive salon products and had to see my doctor. This particular product also kills lice and keeps them away, as does peppermint and eucalyptus...lice hate those oils...just for future reference for moms ;-)

Hi D.,

Fish oils are very good to help with a dry itchy scalp. Be selective about the fish oils that you take. They should guarantee there is no mercury and definitely food based. Also, drinking water is very helpful (1/2 your weight in ounces). Doing things to have a strong immune system will help. So eat a good amount of fresh fruits and vegetables, preferably organic, and when you can't get organic use a spray to remove the pesticides. The one I use is great and very cost effective.

I broke out with itchy-oily spots all over my scalp earlier this spring. I picked up some Tea Tree Oil shampoo and it did wonders for me. The itching stopped right away and the spots cleared up quickly. Tea tree oil is an anti-fungal/anti-microbial. It helps normalize the balance in your scalp. Jason Scalp Normalizing Shampoo (found at walgrees) is what I used. It's also free of harsh chemicals that make the itching worse. After a couple weeks of use, I went back to my regular shampoo and have had no problems.

Good Luck

This may sound crazy, especially because it's been so long, but back-of-the-head itching sometimes means head lice. If so, someone combing through your parted hair very carefully with a lice comb should be able to see if anything's there. I don't know if the shampoos for lice are OK for pregnant moms, but, if not, you can smother them with mayonnaise then put a shower cap on for several hours. You'd also have to wash your bedding with hot water and spray a lice spray on anything like the back of the couch that your head has touched, as well as wash any jackets, hoodies, hats etc. And got through your husgand's and daughter's heads too.

My husband has had this same problem for YEARS, except his itches on the top of his head. He had tried everything on the market (Selson Blue, T-Gel, Head & Shoulders..etc). I finally convinced him to visit a dermatologist. The prescription shampoo worked, but he says it is too expensive to use every time he washes his hair. One thing that worries me though, is that since he has been using the prescription shampoo, his shoulders are itchy right after he gets out of the shower, and he hates using lotion. Good luck with everything.

I would first ask your doctor at your next appt. to see if there is something stronger that he/she can prescribe. You may have a little psoriasis. But I would recommend Paul Mitchell Tea tree shampoo and conditioner. As a hairdresser I recommend this to a lot of my clients and it seams to help.
Pregnancy does strange things to our bodies. But rest assured it will go away when the baby comes.

Hi you should get a clairifying treatment, to remove any residue from all products. All pregent women go through something like this the baby simply takes what it needs through the mother. Have you been to see a dermatoligist? While pregnent can you take small amount of Benidryl? Rather that continue to try over the counter meds, which litterly have no end, I would go to the professionals for addvice, so you can enjoy the pregency and not be uncomfortable. Best of luck to you. Bree

I have had this same problem. The tea-tree oil shampoos work a little. The Netrogena T-Gel shampoo much better. What I use now, though, is Bumble & Bumble Tonic shampoo. It is a dream.
