Itchy Bottom - Casa Grande,AZ

My son (1 1/2) gets really itchy skin on his back side from his waist down to his butt cheeks. I've tried lotion and Vaseline. The lotion doesn't help at all and the Vaseline only slightly helps. He doesn't have visibly dry skin, a rash, bumps, or even redness, but is always scratching his back side, including putting his hand down the back of his diaper to scratch. We only use diaper rash cream when necessary since that seems to make it worse. We already use Aveeno soap to help with the dry skin because Johnson & Johnson was making his skin really dry. We already talked to his doctor and she said to use lotion. Any ideas on what else I can try?

My son had itchy scalp (under 1yr). Used Eucerin cream (thick white one not the clear translucent one). Within days itch was gone.

I know you've got a few suggestions already for aquaphor - I just wanted to add if you look at the ingredients on vaseline and aquaphor they are both basically peterolium jelly and aquaphor is about 4x as expensive BUT it works about 10x better! Totally worth the $$

don't use jergen's because it's all perfumes. try using lubiderm it helps with my skin as a child and with my son's dry skin. also i see that your in AZ. so i don't know if you have dollar tree stores down there but one i was in one and found some creamy petroleum jelly. This stuff works so good. it has a very light sweet smell to it and it comes in a wide yellow squeeze tube. if you don't have dollar tree down there just check in the dollar stores period, this stuff is not made by a really big company( it has a red oval on it that says personal care). Even if you can't find that brand try to find CREAMY PETROLEUM JELLY. good luck! ok i just researched no stores in arizona but i found them on dollartree's website. and also at nextag.com. they are very cheap and can be shipped to you. i know it's a little extreme but i have had ezcema all my life and very dry skin is soooo uncomfortable and i can only imagine how he feels. just a suggestion.

My son (2) has the same problem. My doctor recommended using Cetaphil soap in the bath and Aquafor cream. I can't say it has helped much though.

My husband just discovered the BEST stuff for many kinds of skin irritations. Both of our kids have mild eczema. We have tried everything to relieve the itching and the dry patches to no avail. Then he told me about Aquaphor by Eucerin. I went out and got a jar right away. It is a little spendy, but within a few hours of putting in on our daughter's most "angry" spots on the back of her legs and her bottom, it was all cleared up. Do some research on it. It can be used for skin irritations, cuts and even chapped lips. It is not an antibiotic so it is safe to use daily if needed. I have been using it on a burn I got the other day, and immediately felt relief and it is healing nicely. Good luck!

Vit E tablets. Break them, and rub it on...it is thick and all natural. It is a pain- but worth it. I am allergic to everything and my skin is soooo dry! That is the only thing that helps me.

Caresse T. recommended a creamy petroleum jelly. Vasoline also makes this type of petroleum jelly in a tube. It is more expensive than the one she found in the Dollar Tree but would be less expensive than paying shipping.

My granddaughter has eczema and this creamy petroleum jelly worked for her.

Could your son be sensitive to something in the diaper? Have you tried a scent free brand?

Like someone said try changing the brand of diapers, also try changing your laundry soap, he could be allergic to the laundry soap ur using. Also like someone else said as well use aquaphor or eucrin lotion n yes they are expensive but it worth using.

Try a different diaper.
I know you might be using the same type as you always have but he
could be having a problem with it now.

I had this problem with my 4 year old when he was about 1 or so. We had to change diapers.

Keep him clean and then let his bottom get some fresh air to breathe.
If it doesn't get better then take him back to the Dr.

Good luck.

My son got the same thing, and we were told by his ped to use otc hydrocortisone ointment. And I'd be sure to get the ointment, because the cream can sting. I've used it a couple times on my son when we didn't have ointment on hand, and it stung just about every time. And he NEVER complained about the ointment stinging. The hydrocortisone works wonders on those littly itchy rashes (contact dermatitis). Not only clears it up after a couple uses, but also helps the itch. If you are leary about using the hydrocortisone, try Aquaphor.

Like another poster suggested, I'd think about changing diapers, too. But it could just be the heat/moisture thing. Might not be the diaper at all.

Eucerin cream works wonders on dry skin. Also, Bag Balm for seriously cracked skin. You can get both at Walgreens.

I would try cortisone cream. It is also available in an ointment formula, which might be better, since it's in the diaper area. The other thing I thought of is that you might be dealing with yeast. I would take him in to his doctor, and see what is going on.

Are you sure it's just a rash and not pinworms? An itchy bottom is usually the first sign.

Topically, you could try coconut oil. Get him some "air time." Have some time at home with him naked. Get some sun to the area. Get out of disposables if possible. Try reusable diapers. With either type, change him as soon as he's wet.

I've never heard of a rash that didn't look or feel like a rash at all. If the skin isn't dry, red or bumpy, I think treating this like it's a simple skin irritation is a mistake. You said you "talked" to the doctor...does that mean your son was actually examined or was this a phone call? My first thought was pinworms, which is extremely icky but worth your time to do an internet search.

My daughter has a few allergies, but she gets this rash that starts in certain areas (mouth, elbows, back of hands, behind knees, etc.) just before she comes down with a cold or bad case of allergies. Aquafor didn't do it for us; just made her a bit greasy. A&D diaper creme, which cleared up the few rashes she had as a baby, stings her now, at age 4 when this rash gets to her bum.

Since she started this allergy rash when she was a baby, after my trying all kinds of lotions that the Dr. recommended, like yours did, I became a little more persistent after he recommended this lotion, sold only at Walgreens that was around $10 a bottle. Did nothing. After that, he prescribed the ointment of the cream my own Dr. gives me. I don't know what the real name is, but the generic name is TRIAMCOLONE. I don't use it all the time; only when there's a skin flareup. I also used Nystatin when she was little in case it was yeast, as the Dr. thought, to no avail, although you can check that out. The Triamcolone was really inexpensive w/insurance, and I'm told it's not that expensive w/out, but it is Rx. I'd def. ask him about it and try to get a script. Our ped. said cream or ointment is fine, and I prefer the cream on her because the ointment is so greasy, but you can see if you can try both.

The other thing I did, not exactly for rashes, but in general, but used that Gentle Naturals that has Winnie the Pooh on it. It goes on greasy, but absorbs in and really helps w/dry skin. You can also try powder (I put some on a cotton pad, not so it goes into the air, cough, cough) in the area when it seems to be like a heat rash, especially as the temp climbs. Good luck!

I had this with some of my kids...it was the elastic in the diaper that irritated them. Either change brands or potty train him. 18 months is the perfect age. if you catch him now great. with my boys if I waited they weren't interested again till they were 3. Best wishes.

When my son would have a rash, we would use Powder w/Cornstrach. It'd seemed to work really well.

Good Luck :)
P.S. There's a powder @ Trader Joes called "Monkey Butt", that works great too.

I know another mom mentioned about switching diapers, to huggies pure and natural. Both my sons had the same thing, itchy rash on their butt cheeks. With my first child we tried lotions, vasoline, cortisone cream, everything and it didn't go away until he was potty trained. My second son developed the very same rash as the first. We tried huggies pure and natural and with in the first week the rash is gone and has stayed gone. We have been with the same diapers for at least 6 months. Hope you find something that will work.

My daughter developed an allergy to the stretchy part of her diapers too! We switched to Huggies "Pure and Natural" hypoallergenic diapers (in the green and white package). I get them at Target.

Try hydrocortisone cream or Eucerin lotion. Otherwise, it just may be the diapers.
