Is This Normal? I'm Getting Nervous.

I have found out that I am about 5 weeks pregnant with my second child. I called my OB about 2 weeks ago when I got a positive pregnancy test. She sent me for a blood test to double check I was pregnant and see how my hormones showed up. I haven't had a period since 1/2006, this is because I got pregnant with my first child in February 2006 had him and breastfeed for a year. Well a week later she sent me for another blood test to check the hormones again. They said everything was fine. I went for my first visit this Wednesday, she did a sono and sent me for more blood tests, this time a bunch of blood work. She wants to see me in another two weeks for another sono and then two weeks later for another sono to check for a heartbeat. At first I didn't think much of all the visits and blood work until I talked to my work friends about it. They are making me a little nervous because they keep asking why she wants to see me SO much and why so many blood tests. Has anyone out there had a similar experience? BTW my first pregnancy was all good, no serious conditions and I worked right up to delivery.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went back to my Dr. on Wednesday and she said all my blood work looks GREAT and I have nothing to worry about. She just needed to pinpoint my due date because they couldn't go by my last period. My due date is Sept. 13th :)

You should call your doctor and discuss this with her; you should be able to get her to explain why she is suggesting so many repeat tests. I have two sets of twins. In the beginning of the pregnancies, I had to keep coming back for repeat blood work, as they were watching the increase in hormone level to determine whether it is twins or not. I'm sure there are many different reasons they might want to re-check the tests, so I'm not suggesting that you are carrying twins; rather I'm just pointing out that there are many reasons and so you should not worry at this point. BTW, every pregnancy is different. My first time I carried twins that got very large (over 8 pounds) and worked until 8:30 the night before delivery. The second set had me on bedrest and in the hospital for months with premature births. (all are healthy and robust at this time) but if you can't talk with your doctor, consider getting another one; this stuff is too stressful to go through without being able to have open discussion with the doc.

When I got pregnant, I went for a blood test. They called me the next day to confirm pregnancy and to have me come in. THey did a sono becaust the blood test showed that I was further along than they expected. The tests also showed that I had low progesteron. They gave me some pills for that and also took some more blood. I had a lot of blood taken during my pregnancy.
Just ask your doctor. It is the only way to calm your mind.

Don't let others make you nervous. You should call your Dr. office, (or at your next visit) and just question all of the blood tests (the reason for them all) etc... It is very possible that you are further along then you think you are and the Dr. is just trying to determine how far along you are! Don't be nervous...people always offer their opinions, don't listen - talk to the Dr.. Good luck with baby #2!!!

I went with my God Daughter for her first visit when she was about 5 weeks along. They did blood work and did a sono. Why at this early stage do a sono I do not know!! I think you should ask your doctor why do many tests, but I think that they are just making sure that the levels are increasing. For her, they did two before the normal 8 week check-up that is done when you NORMALLY have your first visit. I would ask QUESTIONS!! that is why you are paying her the big bucks!

It sound to me that she just wants to be sure that everything is going good and there is nothing wrong. It is alot of visits and blood work but you could look at it as you have a very good doctor. I am a mother of 4, one son 15 and 3 girls 12,10 and 9. Some of my doctors did more visits and blood work than others. Wishing you the best of luck with baby # 2! Take LOTS of pictures, they grow up SO fast! S.

I had a ton of blood work done on my first pregnancy mainly to check progestrone levels and that the HCG level were increasing. Maybe your doctor just runs blood work to make sure everything is doubling. I truly think if something was not right your doctor would have discussed it with you. To help yourself feel more comfortable just call and speak to the nurse she will be able to explain everything to you.

My guess is that they are trying to determine the exact age of the baby. Since you haven't had a period in almost two years, they have nothing to go on to get a gestational age. They need to pinpoint the age so that tests they do later on will be more accurate. The blood tests are for the Hcg level which should increase until a certain time in your pregnancy. The sono is an accurate gauge of age, but only during certain times in the first trimester. I'm sure she is just doing her best to determine the age and health of the pregnancy.

Congrats and good luck!!

Maybe there are just some inconsistencies that she wants to check. They could still be in normal ranges, just different between each other and therefore something she wants to keep an eye on. I would ask. You could be worrying yourself over nothing.

it DOES seem kind-of odd to me. but then again, why wouldn't she tell you if something seemed wrong? did you ask what all the bloodwork was for? i think you need to ask her about all your concerns at your next visit. i know it seems like doctors are rushed sometimes, but if you speak up, they will usually be more than happy to sit down and explain things to you. making lists always helps me remember everything i want to say. hopefully nothing is wrong though! is this the same dr. as with your last baby? i was just wondering if you remember going so often with your other baby when you were first preggo
well congrats! and try not to worry!

I had a bunch of sonograms the firt few weeks i was pregnant. The doctor actually wouldn't even recognize the pregnancy until the heart developed and they could see it beating on the screen (about 6 weeks) Until then it was an "egg sac" and they kept telling me that it was very early and i could still miscarry, blah, blah. I think that since you found out you were pregnant so early, they just want to watch the hormone levels and make sure things are changing at a steady rate.

Don't let anyone scare you. If you are not hurting or bleeding, then you should be fine. Another thing--if you happen to not hear a heartbeat at first sono, then don't panic. I am 24 wks along right now and had a sono at 8 wks and they didn't hear it. Not til about 10 wks. SO I am just telling you so you don't freak out. AT this point, no news is good news. Good Luck and Congrats!!
