Hi Mamas,

Help....I need someone who has been through this to tell me what they think....I just started supplementing my breastmilk with formula yesterday...baby is 10 months old, and had probably three ounces of the formula total combined in two feedings. She seemed fine through the day, then woke up this morning with red patches under both of he eyes(almost down to her cheek). I am wondering if any of ya'll have been through this before..I am not sure if it is a contact allergy, or what. I changed nothing else in her routine but this. The pedi seems to thing that it is more likely to be contact dermatitis(based on a phone call) If any of you have experience allergies before with your child, I could definitely use your expertise on this matter. The formula I started her on was Nestle Good Start Supreme( milk based) I really need some help fast as my milk supply has gone down and her appetite is increasing!!!

Thanks So Much!!!

What can I do next?

Both of my sons were allergic to milk. My oldest had a rash over most of his chest and abdomen. They were very tiny bumps, almost like a heat rash. He also had some slight wheezing but it wasn't until he was 3 weeks old that he was diagnosed and he was able to tolerate soy milk just fine.

With my second son, he was on breast milk first, then I tried breast milk after eliminating dairy from my diet (which didn't help), then we tried soy milk for a while (which didn't help either), then we ended up having to go with Nutramigen because he had a milk protein allergy. He also had severe colic throughout this whole process. A couple of ways our pediatrician was able to tell was that he had a distended stomach and the easiest indication was his stool. If it has mucus or blood in it, this could indicate an allergic reaction to milk protein. Your pediatrician should be able to test her stool in the office if you have concerns.

I'm not sure about the patches on her face but it doesn't sound like it would be from formula unless it is from formula leaking onto her face or something. I agree with the previous entry about the fenugreek, it really does work. (I only took one capsule a day though)

Just an FYI about Good Start. My second son had the worst colic ever when we tried it. It could be because it had more of the milk protein (which he was allergic to) but I don't think I will use it again.

p.s. So far, my 7 week old has not had any reactions to breast milk.

I babysat a boy who was allergic to milk, and sometimes he'd get reddish around the eyes (like a raccoon) if he ate something with milk or butter in it. But it would happen within an hour after exposure. He also got red patches all over from breastmilk before his mother cut dairy products from her diet.I wouldn't change anything just yet, but make sure you have some Benadryl in the house (dye-free is best). If it gets worse, you can give her Benadryl to relieve symptoms, then switch to soy. You might get a bottle of the ready-to-feed soy formula to have handy too.

Diary is one of the biggest things the human body is allergic to, we weren't designed to drink another mammals milk. What you are describing to me sounds like "allergy shiners". I would think the formula has caused this. You can try a soy based formula but soy is also highly allergenic.

Have you tried to address your supply issues? Fenugreek capsules 3, 3X a day (you may smell like maple syrup) may increase your supply, drink lots of water and oatmeal also helps increase your supply even oatmeal cookies help!

My 1st daughter was allergic to milk based formula. Her symptoms were red dry patches all over her body. They were really really dry. She was also very cranky & cried all the time. The dr. switched her to a soy formula, & she ckeared up almost right away.

My son had the same reaction, he was even allergic to soy. I ended up having to hand make his formula with rice milk and oat milk as well as suppelmenting vitamins and minerals. Hopefully this won't be your road. I did see a free seminar at Sprouts market in Flower Mound regarding allergies. I don't remember the day or time but try pulling up Sprouts website to see what is on the calendar. Reach out for me if you would like to talk further. My home email is ____@____.com. I will respond faster from my home email than this website as I am not checking in daily..TIME is Crazy as I am starting my own business. Good luck.

My daughter had similar reactions. I had to start weaning her from breastmilk due to my upcoming hysterectomy, and we tried the regular milk based formula. Well she broke out when we started trying to slowly add it to the breastmilk. She would break out in red patches and little bumps all over her face, down her neck, etc. She would also start sneezing and her eyes would start swelling. You could definitely tell it was an allergic reaction. We switched her to soy formula and she was fine. She still drinks Silk Soy milk now and she's two. We keep hoping that she will grow out of it, but it's not looking good. No one in my family has allergies to milk, so we don't know where she got it from. One of the other mother's on this site posted a web link once, and it really has some good stuff for kids with allergies, if that is what your child has. Here it is. http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org/index.php
I would definitely check with your doctor. If she has it again, give her some benedryl (with dr's permission). That should clear it up.
Good luck!
Steph
