Is Sitting up on Their Own Age Specific??

My 6-month old daughter, Katie-Grace cannot sit on her own yet...is this something I should be concerned about? She is a "supported sitter"....when I put her on the floor to play she can sit up but only if my hand is supporting the small of her back.
I am a new mom...perhaps I am just making a big deal out of nothing??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded.....I definitely felt much better after reading everyone's experiences with their little ones.

From all of the information I have gathered she is right on target. In conjunction with the responses I received from all of you and the information from the doctor's office Katie is just perfect!

Hi A.,

I agree with the other mothers. Every baby is different and does things at the time they want to. If you are that concerned you should just call your pediatrician's office. They are always expecting calls from new moms. God knows I've called my sons pediatrician so much over the last few months and have visited them enough that I feel like the pediatrician is one of my friends that I see on a regular basis.
Apart from that, I too am a 32-year old SAHM in Walpole. I am a mom for the first time to a 4 month old boy. I see you are relatively new to the area. Let me know if you need any information about the area. Warmest regards, Kerri

Hi A.,

I think your daughter is doing great. My son is 7 month old and he sits up only when supported. Each baby is unique. They have their own way of development. She is just 6 months and sits up when supported , I think its great. So ,go ahead and enjoy ur baby . Babies grow up so fast :)

hi A.,
babies do things at their own pace and it sounds like she is right on target with the supported sitting. keep doing what your doing and most babies sit unsupported by themselves at around seven months or by the end of the 7th month she should be. i wouldn't worry. if she is hitting all his milestones on target, then she is fine. if she wasn't sitting by herself by 8 monts or so i would talk to your doctor. my son sat unsupported at around the end of 7th month. he is now 9 1/2 months and is crusing alonf furniture aslready. it is amazing how fast they grow and hit these wonderful milestones. like i said i wouldn't worry just enjoy her becuase time flies.

If I remeber correctly, my daugter wasn't sitting on her own by about 7 months. I think every baby is different and when they're stron enough they'll do it

I have a three year old,so it has been a little while. First, is she a heavy baby? Is this just the start of six months for her? Heavier babies tend to sit up, crawl, walk later by what I've seen and heard. I wouldn't really worry unless you don't see her sitting up in about a month. To ease your fears, you pediatrician's office usually doesn't mind a call. My son, was slower to do physical things, but mentally he was advanced as a baby. Most books will tell you that there are "guidelines" for development, but that is all they are is just "guidelines" - not to be written in stone. - I just checked my journal to see when Hayden sat up and it was at 6 1/2 months. He didn't crawl until about 8 1/2 - 9 mo's, and walked at 14 months. Believe, he's a monkey now, and as I said advanced in certain mental areas. Don't worry yet. I think she's normal. S.
