Is My 4 Month Old Eating Enough?

My son turns 4 months old today. He weights just over 13 pounds. Since he was born (he was 3 weeks early- don't know if that matters here), he has ate very little. He's just not a big eater. We've tried it all- breast milk and every type of formula imaginable and he seems to do best on soy formula so that's what he's been on for the past 2 months. He has just started eating about 4 to 4 1/2 oz. every 3 hours. I try to get him to eat more, but he just won't. I am a 1st time Mom, so don't know if this is normal. I worry he's not eating enough and he's not big enough. Any feedback from you experienced mamas?

So What Happened?

Hey ladies! Thought I would update you. We had our 4 month checkup yesterday and the little guy was in the 70th percentile for height and 30th for weight. (which is odd since both my husband and I are short). The Dr. said he wasn't concerned at all. However, I worry Dr.'s always say that so I really want to thank all of you for your kind words. Believe it or not, you all were much more reassuring than a Dr.! Thank you so very much for your support- I was thrilled with your thoughtful responses.

I am the mother of five, pregnant with my sixth, and its been my experience that if they are putting out plenty of wet and soiled diapers, then they are just fine. No one else can ever tell you what is the right size, alot of critics wanna offer unsolicited advice about your baby being too big or too small, but if he has plenty of output (meaning diapers) then there is probably plenty of input. But 4oz every 3hours sounds fine to me.

I went through this with my middle daughter. When we left the hospital she was only eating 3/4 ounce every 3 hours. At four months she was only up to 3 ounces every 3 hours. They eat what they need. As long as your baby is growing steadily and gaining weight, there is nothing to worry about. Just keep doing what you are doing. Now, my middle is 2 1/2 yrs old and she eats everything you put in front of her. And remember, if you have questions about his eating habits, talk to your pediatrician. That is what they are there for.

Don't worry!! Both of my kiddos were born early and to this day they are small. My daughter was 14 weeks early and is 3 now and is still in 2T size and my son was born 12 weeks early and is now 20 months and is just now wearing 12 month sizes. Debby is right when babies are born early they don't pack on as much baby fat and that is something that can never be made up after birth. My sister's little girl was 2 weeks early and she turns 3 tomorrow and she is right on target for growth. It may take some time but everything will catch up and just enjoy him being little while you can because trust me they all grow up way too fast!

by this age my boys were all on a 4 hour schedule so you're doing really well.

Soy does not pack on the pounds like the other formulas. Besides he's a premie so he's going to have age adjusted growth expectations. He'll have an extra 3 weeks to actually double his weight after he turns one.

Not all baby are chubby. He didn't get the time to pack on baby fat before birth so he may never have that "look".

YOU ARE DOING FINE.

I believe that as long as he's gaining wait he'll be fine, you should have a 4month wellness check coming up soon, he'll be able to tell you if the baby's growing at an OK pace. Don't forget to mention (if he doesn't already know) that the baby was 3weeks early. Hope this helps...

My son is 4 1/2 months old and was also 3 weeks early. He eats the same amount. When he has formula it is also soy. He weights a pound more than yours. I have a 17 month old daughter who was 5 weeks early and when she was 4 months old she weighed under 10lbs. She is only right over 20 right now but the dr. says it is fine they eat what is right for them.

First off, every baby is different. My first son was breastfed and ate for 30 minutes every 2-3 hours. He of course was a big boy! My second son refused to breastfeed and was on soy formula. He ate very little and was a lot smaller than his big brother was (he was also 3 weeks early).

More than likely your son is more than fine. The only thing that I can think of checking, is seeing if he has any allergies. My second son did have problems with allergies and once we got them under control, he started eating a lot more. Now he is in the 90th percentile on the growth charts.

Well i no nothing of small eaters. lol... My little boy who Turns 4 months next week is a BIG eater. Like your boy mine does best of SOY formula. We tried regular formula and he was throwing it up and begin to show signs of colic ( my first born had colic from regular formula) so I switched him to soy and he is doing great. He drinks 4-6 ozs every 2-3 hours. he is ont on cereal for another few days then i am going to try him on it because he is drinking TO much formula and not getting full enough. He only sleeps 1 hour at a time during the day and 2-4 hours at night. ugg.

I would think that 4 oz is about normal though. so you are doing great. he will catch up. he is about right on weight too. My little boy weighs about 18-20 lbs (he weighed 9lbs 7.5 oz when he was born my girl weighed 10.6 )

good luck i can't wait for my little boy to eat cereal that is soo much fun when they eat baby foods.

To my knowledge, an infant's stomach is only 4oz big (give or take). It'll grow too, but for the time being, 4-4 1/2 oz every three hours is great. My son's almost 4 months old too, and when I give him breatmilk in a bottle he'll only take about 3. Even if he starts eating more spaced out, I wouldn't worry. Formula takes longer to digest.

But I must agree with Dawn. Don't worry about growth charts or what anybody tells you his size should be. If you're changing a good amount of diapers each day then your boy is eating just fine.

My name is J. Rutledge and it is normal for them to not eat much. Give him time and before you know it;he will be eating everyhting in sighta nd you will wish that he was litle again. When my oldest, who is now 8, was born we were lucky if she ate 2 to 2 1/2 ozs every three hours. By the time she was 13 months old she was eating 8 ozs about every 3 to 4 hours.
