So my girl friedn took my three year old and eighteen month old over night on thursday. She said that they slept well but Gieger woke up fussing every hour..Not fully waking up. Sounded like teething but usually he starts acold the day after this happening. No cold. But when I got them back friday afternoon from her he felt like he had a fever. I gave him some time maybe he was just warm from riding in the car. Then that evening they went to grandmas because me and dad had to go down the hospital. When we pick them up he very odviously had a fever. Still not cold. So I gave him infant motrin and he slept wonderfully(which is weird too because he usually wimpers when he is teething through the night). Then saturday we woke up burning up and pink cheeked. Still no cold. Gave him motrin went away from about 4 or so hours. Same thing though later that day flaming hot. And then in the evening got really whinnie and clingy. gave him motrin again and he was fine back to playing. Still no cold. He slept ok through the night again but every time i felt him he was on fire. He woke up at fourish and I gave him more motrin(it sounds like alot but I never give him full doses of it. And i will not use tylenol i prefer the motrin as per his doc says it is better for them and actually works for fevers) he was really unconfortable and came and laid in bed with us. Be flopped around for almost an hour and then finally fell back to sleep. Still not cold. I can see where teeth may be coming in but I just dont know if I should be worried he picked something up at the hospital Tuesday when we were there or what?? How long do kids have a fever while teething? He hasnt cut teeth in a long time now and I dont remember. It has always been the hardest thing for him to do though I know. Thank you in advance!!

What can I do next?

My son, Reeves had what sounds like the same thing about 6 mos ago. He had a high fever that would go away with motrin and then come back. When the fever was under control, he acted fine, when the medicine wore off, he was lethargic and pathetic. The doctor said that it was a viral thing. I would say that after the 3rd day you would probably want to schedule a dr. appt just in case.
Good luck!

I would also recommend taking his temp. He might have something unrelated to his teething? Also- I would give him something cold to chew on if it helps. You know your child - but I have been reading a lot that colds/fevers are not part of teething as a 'normal' thing but more of an infection thing. So you might want that checked out if it's too bad.

Also something I heard, so take it with a grain of salt, and something to talk to the doctor about- Give 1 correct size dose to your child or it might not work properly. Apparently us mothers are guilty of under dosing our children. I would definatly talk to your doctor about that to make sure. They say that the under dose doesn't help the child as much. And if your son is sick then the correct dosage as often as the label says is totally okay. They are sick.

Good luck! I hope your little one is running around and much better soon. Don't be afraid to go to your doctor.

Take his temperature if you are concerned. My doctor always says if its under 101, don't bother with the tylenol or motrin, let his body do it's job. If he has a fever of 101 or more for 3 days, it's time to see the doctor.

He could be teething or fighing a cold, If it lasts for more that 3 days, Id call his pedetrician. Teething can cause weird things, it did with my oldest. At night fevers are always worse.

Hi E.,

Our pediatrician always told us NOT to give any type of pain medication if there is a fever or anything unless when you took a temperature and it was over 101 degrees. The body does best and works it out better if you don't keep suppressing the fever with medication. You don't say if you have taken a temperature or not- you can't tell just by feeling, as my son (now 13) used to do the same thing and he didn't have a temperature on the thermometer, he was just sweating out whatever his body needed him to do. If you can, lay off the Motrin and let his body's system work it out for itself. It may be difficult for you, as I know you are expecting any day, but it always worked with our son.

Good luck!

There is a bad virus going around. You might want to call the pediatrician just to be sure. My 15-month old son had something very similar last week with vomitting. His fever was high for three or four days, somewhere around 103. Our doctor said not to worry too much about a fever under 104 (which surprised me!) that it is good and may burn up the virus. A few other kids in his daycare had it, a few folks I work with and one of our babysitters, too. It is not fun.

He's probably not teeting at all, he's probably sick! Especially if he was "flaming hot"! I would do the motrin like you are doing, although you can also do the Tylenol, it help with pain. (I have noticed motrin seems to help more with fevers, Tylenol with pain). Good luck!

there is a virus going around that is just a high fever, no cold, no other symptoms just fever...you might take him into his pediatrician to get checked out or just call and relay his symptoms to doc or nurse to see if this is something that is still going around. My kids personally have not gotten this but I know of many moms around the Camano/Stanwood area whose kids have had just that...a high fever on/off for about a week with no other symptoms.

If he is still sick today, he really needs to see the doctor. My 18 month old had a high fever and finally took him in. They tested him for menengitis, but it ended up being pneumonia. Of course, this was with cold symptoms, but it there is a high fever, the body is trying to fight off something. He may need help doing this. You don't know what the cause is and it will help you to not have to worry when you go to give birth. Haven't you had that baby yet????
Good luck to you. Can't wait to hear.

Not sure if he sounds sick or just teething...if it is teething though, you might want to look into getting a hazelwood necklace for him to wear as it really helps with teething pain and could cut down on how much medicine you need to give him for that. They were originally used by native americans to help calm teething pain. The hazelwood actually has the property of absorbing the body's excess acid. We just discovered them and they have been a miracle for healing our 5 month's old eczema(they help with a variety of ailments from teething, to eczema, to acid reflux; all associated with excess acid production) and helping with our just turned 2 year old's teething (he's gotten like 10 teeth in the last 3 months including 4 molars..he was a late teether) The necklaces are designed to be safe for babies to wear. Hope your LO feels better soon!

I don't think that your son is teething, although he could be getting his two year molars soon. I think your has a flu bug. A child does not get a cold or fever from teething. He has been exposed to a virus.

My children always ran very very high fevers when they teethed. ( some times as much as 104) my pediatrician said kids do not get fevers when they teeth, but my naturpath said of course they do.

I never used drugs to take down the fevers since the naturapath said that they are the body's defense and there is a reason for them. He felt they were protective when a child was teething there was increased chance of infection especially with all that kids put in their mouths, so he felt that the fever was protective and that the child would get over the teething faster if the body got to run the fever. I do not have a comparison since I never used any drugs to take it down.

We did use Hyland's teething tablets to make them feel better and also would use a damp shirt or socks to cool them down just enough to sleep. The older the child the harder the teeth they have coming in are to break since molars are harder than front teeth are. I have found that my kids teethed those for weeks at a time. During that time they were more likely to catch things if they were around sick people or ate junk food than @ other times.

Not sure if that's any help, but hope so.

Hi E.,
I'm not a doctor, but teething is normally associated with a low-grade fever, so your son shouldn't be burning up just because he's cutting teeth. If his fever persists and you notice that he's less active, I'd get him to a doctor. Good Luck.

I am wondering the smae thing right now ith my 2 year old. He has had a fever for a few days with no other symptoms, until this morning. He had a slight runny nose, but he was also crying. I think something is going around. I had used motrin to suppress it a few times, but it has responded well whenever I have given it so I am not too worried. I have been told to alternate tylenol and motrin and not to worry about any fever, unless you cannot control it with medication. If it responds when you give him the motrin, do not worry too much. ALthough I would still take him in if it continues for any longer, or any other symptoms show up.Good Luck!

Have you had him checked for an ear infection? Sometimes they have the same types of symptoms as teething. Just a suggestion.

i agree with the others who say that it is probably an ear infection. My son had a fever of 104 when he had one, no other symtoms.

Ear infection symptoms are: fever, sometimes ear discharge, and they do NOT like to be on their backs. Just went through this with my 14 month daughter. I think it hurts their ears when they are laying down. We were up with her 3 nights, just holding her up. It started out as viral and turned into ear infection.

I sympathize with you E.. You just didn't need this extra worry. He may have "caught a bug" and is sick. He'll be OK in a few days. Giving him Motrin is the right thing to do. I've read that alternating doses of Motrin and Tylenol works better than using just one does. You could try that if the Motrin stops being as effective.

I'd also ask if you are actually taking his temperature with a thermometer. Both of my grandkids frequently feel like they're burning up when I touch them. Nearly always they have only a minor fever (99 degrees) or no fever at all.

Since he seems to feel good part of the time and then feels bad again I wonder if he's reacting to the stress you're all having over the difficulties of giving birth. This would be quite natural. And I would think that you might be more worried than you ordinarily would be because of the pain and frustration you're feeling.

Next to impossible to do, I know, but I'd try to spend time focusing on ways to relax. Geiger will be OK.

Another idea: When he once more acts sick is it time for another dose of Motrin? Motrin is safe if given as directed on the bottle. Perhaps you could give him a dose more often?
