Is it safe to use baby bath seat or rings?

I am wondering about bath rings/seats. Consumer report says they are no good and to avoid them if possible. The thing is my son loves his bath time and I am there rihgt beside him. I want to move him from the infant bath tub I got him to the big boy tub so he can have more room to play and sit up. Any advice on this subject and I used the old blue ones that had the round colored toys on the front. But...I gave it away to a family member who needed it, and now the ones they have in the stores are nothing like the one I loved. Waitin to hear what other mothers have to say about the bath rings/seats.

Thanks

What can I do next?

Summary

Most moms use it recommend it, as long as you don't leave your child unattended in water, and keep an eye on the child. Read the article for other moms opinions.

So What Happened?™

I am greatful for everyone who replied to my message. I would never leave my baby unattended in any water, I am so afraid of him even sleeping at night afraid of sids SO i am a over protected mother, but I feel these are our children so we have to be this age in time. I am going to go ahead and get one and try it out. This site or anything like it was never around when my first two were born it's nice to hear from other parents in the same boat. Might say you all are my distance family. Thanks again to Mamasource for the sight so we can all help one another.

I know everything is dangerous now but i love the blue bath chair. I had one in each bath chair. I knew it could tip over but i also knew i was sitting right there by the tub. They all three loved the chair and the freedom. I did have to place a folded towel along the seat around the back so they wouldn't slide down too much until they got a little older. I would sit on my bench and read books or sing songs and just let them go at it. I could pull the chair up to the faucet, that was their favorite spot. Give them a cup and they are in heaven. I say if you plan on being in the bathroom, use the blue chair. I loved mine.

i got ine for my son form target on line it is a bath ring that has an L shaped handle that attaches (temporarily) to the side of your tub . Lots of new tubs have a textured no slip bottom so the ones with suction cups don't work I loved this one and so did my son he splashed away everytime. The only problem we had with it is it is a bit bulky to store and since we only have one bathroom we had to remove it everytime. But it was still worth it!

I use a bath ring for my son, did for my daughter too. I agree with the previous person, the bath ring causes no problem if you are right there and don't take your attention off your son. I never even leave the tub AT ALL. He has started to tip over before, but it was probably due to too much water and I was right there to stabilize it before it went very far. I say if you want one, get one. Just use it with great caution and never leave your son's side.

I was in your same boat a while back, and I did tons of research. What I found was that they say the bath rings are unsafe because they might give you a false sense of security, you leave your child unattended, and then terrible, unspeakable thing happens... But I agreed that the new ones look awkward and cumbersome.

My thought was that my son would love the bath ring (we found one of the blue ones with the colored rings on ebay), which he did. And I don't leave his side when he's in the bath, so we are safe.

It worked great, and it was perfectly safe since I was right there. He loved really being in the water and beign able to sit up "by himself."

Now he's 18 monnths and the bath is his own private swimming pool - no ring could keep him from doing his little laps!

Good luck & have so much fun with your kids - young and old!

I don't know how old your baby is but when Kelsey was to big for her infant bath seat we moved her to the sink for all of 2 weeks before that was just a hassle. We then got a really good bath mat and she just sits in the big tub. We run about 5 inches of water and she LOVES it!

This may be off base from what you are looking for, but... When my son was at that kind of in-between age, I bathed him in the kitchen sink! It was perfect! By the time he had out grown it, he was totally OK to sit up by himself and play in the tub with no problem.

I even bought a small folding stool at Wally (like $9) for me to sit on (it put me at the right height) while he played in the sink! It was a perfect solution for us.

As far as the rings, my BFF used one with her son several years ago with no problem. I think it's the fact that ignorant people think the seat can "babysit" their child and leave the child alone in the tub that causes problems. As long as you don't do that, I couldn't imagine any problems you would have.

Good Luck!

We just use one of the no slip mats in the bottom of the tub. You are right here with your son so just put him in and watch him play. My 8 month old loves to play in the bath tub. He and his sister both love to splash together. It gives you a lot of room also.

I wouldn't do the bath rings either. I too bathed my kids in the sink till they were big enough to sit up on their own... it saves your back, too. I wouldn't even own a bath ring. It brings too much risk with it.
