Is It Possible to Catch a Cold While on Anti-biotics?

OK, my family has been passing junk around since the week before Christmas. I went to the Dr. last Saturday because I couldn't stop coughing and my ears hurt like crazy, they gave me an antibiotic (a pretty strong one because I have had issues with them working in the past) and I've just taken the last pill. My question: I'm now all congested again with sneezing and my head feeling like it's going to blow up ( and my ears still hurt as well ), can I have caught a cold even though I've been taking antibiotics for a week?

Confused and cranky, I just want to feel better!!!

M.

What can I do next?

Colds are viruses. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections. Two very different things. there are no medicaitons to end a virus - some may treat the symptoms but don't get you any better. So the answer is yes - you can.

Yes, as Canuck said, a cold is a viral infection. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections. Two different things.

Yep. Antibiotics are for bacterial infection - kills the bacteria. Colds are viral (virus). No cure for that. Sleep and fluids

Yes, it's possible.

A cold isn't typically a bacteria..which is what antibiotics work on.

You might be having an allergic reaction to the antibiotic. Call the pharmacist who filled the script and call your doctor. Tell them both what is going on and see what they want to do.

good luck! hope you are feeling better soon!

Secondary infections... can also occur, even with a common cold.
And antibiotics only works, with bacterial based, infections/illness.
And, a person can have various virus illnesses too, back to back. Because, there are so many virus strains... which seem like the same cold, but is not.
That happened with my son once.
And, even if given antibiotics... antibiotics are NOT all the same. There are, various antibiotic families/types. So, if one does not work, another antibiotic type, is then, prescribed. Not the same one, over and over and over.

Yes. A cold is a virus. An antibiotic would not be effective at fighting off or stopping a cold.

Antibiotics fight bacterial infections (such as an ear infection) and a cold is a viral infection, so yes, you can catch a cold while on antibiotics.

Sounds to me like you have a sinus issue going on... I had the same symptoms at first (congestion and headache with coughing.) my ears felt like they wouldn't pop, and after a few days even my eyes felt like they were bruised and about to pop out of their sockets.

Try a neti pot or irrigate your nasal passages with an unmedicated saline solution (just tip your head to one side and back, and let the solution drip into your nose, let it run back. If it won't progress, blow and try again.) If you don't have anything going on, it won't hurt you. But if you DO, it will help immediately and tremendously. My symptoms were completely relieved he first night I did it (and I was able to sleep the entire night, instead of just 20 minute spurts...) by the third day I was completely better. :)

Yes. Antibiotics do nothing against viruses. Colds are viruses. Antibiotics combat bacteria... (probably some bacteria growing in your eustachian tubes from drainage associated with a virus. The antibiotics will help with the bacterial infection, but not the underlying virus.

Antibiotics are for bacterial infections. You probably have something viral. If your original cough and ear pain was caused by a virus also, the antibiotics wouldn't have worked on them anyway.

If possible, rest, drink lots of water, try to keep your immunity strong, avoid large crowds (where you can pick up more bugs with your compromised immunity) and wash your hands a lot after being out in public. If the pain is really strong, take a painkiller. And since you've been on antibiotics, try to counteract the side-effects with probiotics.

But mostly, just rest as much as you can (difficult, I know, with all our busy lives). Hope you feel better soon - being sick is awful!

A cold is a group of viruses. The antibiotic only treats a bacterial infection. So sorry you're sick. Keep drinking lots of water.

Sure it is possible. That is why they say we should not take too many antibiotics. We become immune to their fighting abilities and they no longer work on the individual.

There is a big flu going around the entire US. I keep seeing little news reports of it. My husband is very sick and I just told him he may need to go to the doctor. He doesn't like going, but he sounds horrible.

Try this. You will need water, 1/2 lemon, honey, oregano, & cinnamon (optional).

Pour your boiled water in with the lemon juice and spoon of honey. If you have a tea steeper, place a spoon of oregano in the tea basket. Let it sit for 3 minutes. Remove the oregano and add a small dash of cinnamon. Drink this 2 times for 3 days.

If you don't have a tea steeper, put the oregano in a coffee filter and twist it off. The key is you don't want oregano flakes in your throat.

This works for me and I never go to the doc for a cold, cough, allergy, or sneeze.

Get well!

I would check back with the dr. and see if your orginal infection is cleared up. I have known sinus infections to last far too long and be resistant to antibiotics.

However, Yes a cold could happen as they are two differnet types of infections.

Eat foods that will help bost your immunity!..Homeade soup is the best.. Garlic, onions help boost your immunity and open up sinus.

Good luck

You can but if you never got better in the first place you may need another antibiotic or a different one. You should report your symptoms to your doctor.

My daughter was treated for a sinus infection but still had some symptoms although not as severe after taking the antibiotic for 10 days. The doctor then prescribed 10 more days of they antibiotic she was on. She finally got better.

Yes.
Antibiotics do nothing against allergies or viruses.
And there are quite a few antibiotic resistant bacteria out there.
Antibiotics are not working as well as they use to.
I totally blame the meat industry.
4/5 of all antibiotics manufactured are used in animal feed for healthy livestock.
This is what will eventually make something like swine or bird flu become a serious killer among people again.

Well a cold is a virus and antibiotics don't do anything for a virus, the common cold has to run its course. You can treat the symptoms of a cold but the antibiotics won't do much for it.
