My daughter is starting a new moms day out on Tuesday. I go tomorrow to pay registration and tuition. I have a bunch of toys I am getting rid of- all in great shape, everything works. Mostly Fisher Price and Playskool. I also have a small play kitchen and slide that is going. I was going to save everything for a JBF sale but then I thought her new school could benefit from it. So, my question is, could I ask the school if they are interested in the toys and maybe get them to waive registration fee in exchange? I don't want to sound cheap- but that would be a great trade for me. I was just wondering if it sounds ok to ask and if you have done something like this before. My husband says go for it- all they can do is say no. But I don't want to make them uncomfortable by asking either. What do you think? I have quite a bit that I could easily sell at JBF for 100.00 or so and the reg fee is 80.00. Thanks for the input moms.
Well- I asked and she offered to take half off the registration. That's not bad. It never hurts to ask. Now if I can just get these toys out the door without my little one seeing me!
You might want to call tomorrow and ask ahead of time. If you are there with lots of other Moms doing registration, it's possible they will be too busy to say yes to an unusual question. With a little lead time they might be willing to work it out with you.

If you choose to ask, do it before school so that you don't hit them by surprise. I would not want to start out with an uncomfortable feeling at a new school.
It would be very nice for you to donate them to the school and get the tax benefit. You probably won't get your money's worth with any garage sales, etc because people want something for nothing.
Also, like others have said....you never know what they might say!
I see no harm in asking. Let us know what they say. Personally, I would be way too embarrassed to ask. I would either donate them to the school and ask for a tax receipt to declare it on my taxes (which may get you more money in the long run although I'm no tax expert. That's my husband's deal) or sell them and use that money for the registration.
I think that you should ask ~ never thought of that idea! But I know from teaching at a program like that, that the fees are used for supplies and that toys and other things are generally purchased from other 'money' sources. I am not sure how their funding works, BUT if all else fails, you can take those toys to Kid to Kidl or other resale shops and then use that money for the registration. I hope the trade works though! That is a great idea! I am going to take that to the MDO program I worked at and give them that idea for parents who could benefit from that!

That's actually a really cool idea. I would at least try.
Of course it does not hurt to ask. However, if the MDO is through a preschool program any money changes to your fees have to be approved by the preschool board. They only meet once a month. Also, many teachers are responsible for the toys for the classroom, not the program, and teachers do not have an influence on fees, etc. If it is a smaller school, you have a better chance of getting a yes.
