I would have her tested for allergies and get her in to see a pulminologist. My son has been seeing one since he was 15 months old b/c he couldn't get rid of a cold for 6 months. They found out he was allergic to Oak, dust and dogs all of which he was around and participated in him not getting better. My son goes to Sr. Sawicki at Children Hospital he's great! When we lived closer to RI he went to Dr. Passero in RI she has a rough bed side manner (very blunt) but really knows her stuff and got my son on track within weeks. My son is going to be 6 in Feb and is heading into this winter on zero meds thanks to all the doctors help. If you need anymore info let me know. Good luck.

My 6-year-old is susceptible to bronchial problems when she gets colds. We've found no reason why this would be so and our ped has prescribed her an inhaler that we give when she gets a cold that carries a heavy cough. The inhaler helps prevent the cough from progressing into something deeper and worse, like bronchitis or pneumonia. I'm not big on meds and put a lot of effort into making healthy, home-cooked, veggie filled meals for the family, but she is just sensitive. It does sound like your daughter has something bigger going on though...3-4 times a year is a lot. Talk to her ped about finding out what the underlying cause is. Good luck!

No, it's not normal. It is probably viral in nature, so don't bother going the route of antibiotics as they are not designed for viral infections. I used to get bronchitis 4-5 times a year, and my friends have a child who had pneumonia many times every year. They hated using the nebulizer with all those chemicals, and of course their lives (and my life) were drastically affected. We both solved our problems with LIQUID NUTRITIONAL supplements - I would not go to vitamin pills because they are not well absorbed and so you often wind up wasting up to 2/3 of your money. I can send you some info from the Physicians Desk Reference on the problems with pills if you want. We went to Reliv because it is balanced, completely safe, patented (therefore unique and effective), and has such a high absorption rate. I know hundreds of people who will never use anything else, and who had all but given up on other products before they found Reliv. Happy to share more info.

I would have to say definitely not. Getting a cold several times is normal, but your daughter has something more going on. I would suggest you get her an appointment to see someone that specializes in respiratory illnesses so you can be sure she is being treated properly.
good luck!

My son has had Pneumonia 3x since he was born . He has asthma and severe food allergys. His allergist tested his immune system because he said for a child to have pneumonia more that 2x before 5 is unusual. I would go to childrens. They can find stuff that your pedi cant. Im not to sure what specialty you would see maybe lung??

Take her to see a Naturopathic doctor if her pediatrician hasn't made better suggestions to keep the infections away. It will be one of the best things you will do for her health. They can give you suggestions or supplements to improve on her overall health...unlike the regular doctor that will give her antibiotics on a regular basis. Google one in your area and make sure her diet is rich in fresh fruits and lots of vegies. Eliminate refined sugar from her diet as much as you can! It's your job to feed her well!
Good luck,

Has she been checked for asthma? My 6 year old was diagnosed with asthma this summer. Hers is triggered by viruses - almost anything she gets turns into a nasty cough/pneumonia. She's now on FloVent inhaler as a preventative and it's helped a lot.

It doesn't seem normal to me. Even once every year doesn't seem good. Has your pediatrician ever said anything about it? If not, try a new pediatrian. Even a specialist.

Good luck.

I don't believe this is normal. Did your daughter ever have gastric reflux as a baby? All you have to do is reflux a couple of times a week, and it can cause havoc with your throat and nose. I have a daughter with special needs who had constant upper respiratory problems. Once we put her on prilosec, she was 1,000 times better.

Just a thought.

No.

It is normal to never have either.

Normal, by definition, is not diseased. Both of these are diseases.

She may have some underlying physical abnormality, but being in North America, I'd bet on a dairy allergy. Many professional singers don't drink milk, because it creates so much mucus in most people's bodies --that extra mucus is enough for lots of people to get bacterial infections really easily.

Contrary to the advertising done by the dairy industry (including most of the textbooks and learning materials 'supplied' by them to the dietition and nutritionist education programs), once weaned, milk products OF ALL KINDS are unnecessary for humans to thrive.

Milk (and derivatives) are healthy foods, to be sure. They're just not necessary foods. They are certainly not necessary every day. Cow's milk is a cheap source of calories and nutrients (although far too high in sodium for most children's bodies), particularly in the US where they are highly subsidized, but that doesn't make them mandatory, either.

Cow's milk is baby food for cows. Once weaned, most mammals never drink milk again. Few other m.ammals ever eat another species' milk (scavengers like hyenas do). People do not need cow's milk anymore than they need dog's milk or otter's milk...

My oldest has asthma and gets pneumonia everytime he has a cold. My youngest recovers quickly and easily from colds so I would say no its not and there is probably some under lying cause like an allergy or something that adds to it I agree w/ the other poster try cutting out dairy. We don't give that much dairy there are plenty of other ways to get calcium and we don't give any dairy during colds.
