Is It Colic?
My 6 week old has been having trouble with having bowel movements pretty much since she's been born. She tries pushing and pushing and pulling her legs up all while screaming at the top of her lungs. She does this every night and screams anywhere from 1-3 hours and it is very hard to console her since it seems she is trying to have a bowel movement. She does have reflux and is on Zantac. We just switched her formula from Isomil (soy based) to Nestle Good Start Supreme with DHA and ARA (after many of you recommended it...thanks by the way). When she was on Isomil she was having dry and hard bowel movements. We started to put a little bit of prune juice in her formula and then decided to stop that since it probably aggravated the reflux (that's when we switched to the Nestle Good Start with NO prune juice.) I'm wondering if she could have colic too? If so, what can I do for her?

My daughter developed this at 5 weeks. Someone suggested a chiropractor and I though that they were nuts. After weeks of no sleep and seeing my baby in pain I decided to give it a try. She went in screaming unconsolibly. As we were walking out the door she stopped. Within 10 minutes she pooped so much that she ruined her outfit. We took her weekly for about a month andthen just as needed. If it hadn't worked for me first hand I would never believe it.
Also-my ped recommended a little Karo with every bottle for constipation and it worked very well.
Good Luck!

I may going to tell you to call the ped and have her tested for a food allergy. I went through a similar problem with my son, its wasnt till after 2 trips to the ER with the screaming that they tested him for food allergies...Milk and soy. Its hard to detect and comes across as reflux.
Its worth a shot.

My son had had a lot of bowel problems starting as infant on up.after trying tons of different stuff we found out doing the gas drops after every bottle and adding fiber into his foods just a lil sprinkle.and before bed we let him play in the tub awhile in warm water and a small amount of vasaline around his bum and it helped push a lil easier, but not to try and scare you my son at 6 months stopped pooing all together due to a large mass on his bowels.since having my dd and sitting in the peds office i listen to a lot of moms going through the same problems and most all say it's the formula.my advice would be give 2-3 spoonfuls of prunes i wouldn't add anything like that to formula.and only once in awhile she is still so little.i would speak to the peds about this again and u can ask for a sonogram to check her belly.

Hi J., have you talked to your doctor about changing formula's? And about the poo? You should discuss both these matters with your doctor...
You can try wrapping your baby tighly in a recieving blanket before she starts screaming (if possiable). Something my Dr. told me with my first has always stuck with me and was of great help with my other two...remember for 9 mo or so your baby was in a warm, fluid, dark, peaceful place where all her needs were met all the time and it was easy for her to move around in...then as she grew it became a snuggly place. then all of the sudden she it trust out into a loud, bright, continually changing enviorment...cold wipes on the behind, clothes, lights, tv, radios, voices, textures...all are strange and can be overwhelming. IF she breaks down (screaming for no apparent reason) and trys to fold herself up put her in her softest, warmest sleeper, wrap her up, find a quiet spot and rock her gently, try even talking to her softly at that time and see if that helps you. It may take some time, but I know this has helped with our girls.
Never put anything in her formula without the doctor knowing or approving. They have found that introducing juices and cerals in formula and/or too early can cause allergies.
hang in there!! This too shall pass.

Hi J.-
My daughter now 4 months old had some pooping issues when she was first born. I breast feed and formula feed. She was getting similac soy formula. But she wasn't pooping for days, and she would scream all day and all night, painful bone chilling screams (more at night after 6 pm). I call her doctor and he told me to try similac alimentum. IT HAS BEEN A LIFE SAVER! She was a completly new baby after i started her on it. She poops every day, no more crying fits, and much happier at all times.
I would recomend trying it, it is easier for babies to digest (the protien in it). But talk to your doctor if you cant resolve it on your own. I also give my daughter water 2-4 oz a few times a day. Hydration is key to pooping and she loves it! You could also try GRIPE WATER, you can get it at the grocery or drug store with the gas products, it helps with soothing their tummys. It help my daughter when she gets gassy. It has ginger in it to help with digestion also.
Good luck, I feel your pain.

Well is does sound like a formula issue. My son had it BAD and I wish I could hit the "do over" button to help with giving him a soy based formula or a lower iron formula.
With the reflux, try a little rice cereal in her bottle. I gave my son a little maloxx (sp?) per doctor orders for his reflux.
It's tough, I know. It pains you to see the child cry in such a way. Try putting her in a warm blanket from the dryer to help try soother her.
Hang in there. Hopefully the formula with regualate over time.

My sister had the exact same problem with her daughter, now 10 months old. It was disturbing to see such a little thing so distraught and tense. We still have to watch her daughter's dairy product intake and everything she eats, but she no longer has to be on a stool softener. That is the route the doctor finally, after months of my sister insisting it wasn't normal stuggling with bowel movements. It isn't a laxative, it is a stool softener, the doctor can prescribe it for your baby and a few drops is all it takes for them to go more comfortably. Soy formula didn't work for my neice either because it caused too much gas. To this day, she gets tense and whimpers when she has a bowel movement, not because it hurts, but because she still associates it with all of the pain she went through. Now that she is mostly on solids it isn't much of an issue, but she has to have lactose free milk and limited other dairy products. Eventually she will be weaned off of cow milk completely becasue it is not jsut the lactose that can make you sick. Milk allergy tends to run in the family and it is tied with skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis or nickel allergies.

No its the same problem as before!! Her bowels are to dry. Try addding Karo dark corn syrup to her formula and increase her ratio of water to formula. If she is a healthly weight then she should be fine. It sounds like there might be to much mix to water ratio for her body. DO not give babies prune juice!!!!!! Your ped is nuts to have told you that. They arn't supposed to have ANY juice for a long time from now. 6 weeks is way to early. Why did she start on soy fromula???? It very strange to have a child start on that as a first choice. Talk to your ped too to make sure that you have her on the right formula for her.
