Is Flavored Carbonated Water and EmergenC Ok to Drink While Pregnant?

I've been drinking a LOT of the "Crystal Clear" and Sams Choice flavored sparkling water as well. Also when I'm out with my husband to a restaurant, I like to put EmergenC (vitamin packets) into my water for flavor and extra vitamins.

I'm hoping that these are ok...because it's like my "treat" at the end of a long day..

Thank you so much for any and all help!!!

Do either of them contain aspartame or any other artificial sweetener? I would not drink anything with artificial sweeteners because of all the tumors and cancer causing effects they have on lab animals. Just be careful, please.

I believe the carbonation is fine, just try to steer clear of caffiene. I'm not sure about the EmergenC because of the extra vitamins - but I know Crystal Light and several others have the little packets you can add to water. I think there are even some green tea ones that are really good! And green tea is a really good immune booster - it's no fun to be pregnant and sick with a cold or flu! Just make sure it's decaffinated - a little caffiene won't hurt you or the baby, I believe you can have one or two cups of coffee a day, but if you can do without, even better. Congratulations!!!!

Personally I wouldn't drink them while pregnant if they have aspartame in the ingredient. But I would ask your doctor.

If the drinks contain aspertame(sp) then no don't drink them. Aspertame can cause retardation and other birth defects. If you want a vitamin water drink the ones you find in the convienence store called Glaceau vitamin water. They have all kinds of flavors for different things like defense, power-c, etc. Stay away from things like Crystal Light. I am 20weeks and I drink that vitamin water. Plus if you want a pretty decent treat do a chocolate ensure "high protein". They are good with vitamins etc. The protein is good for you and the baby. Hope this helps.

My OBGYN said EmergenC was fine. As with anything, in moderation. It's a lot of vitamin C. I would check with your doctor as to what he/she feels is an okay amount. With the flavored water I would watch out for the artificial sweeteners. My doctor had advised me to stay away from Splenda, Sweet 'n Low etc. while I was pregnant. It was tough since I love to put Sweet 'n Low in my teas etc...

As far as I know, the carbonated water should be fine... Europeans hardly drink anything else... even at the McD's they serve carbonated water.

Vit. C is proven to boost the immune system, and it's very rare for someone to overdose (you'd have to take HUGE megadoses) Keeping yourself well by boosting your immune system is probably one of the best ways to a healthy pregnancy.... although, I've heard of people getting nauseated by too many vitamins, I never had that problem... I was always careful about dosages... especially during pregnancy. You may feel better if you just double check with your doctor or midwife.

Best wishes for a wonderful experience.

Squeeze some real lemon and pour some real sugar in that water. You'll feel cleaner, healthier. So many thngs have chemicals in them that you can't avoid, so if you have the choice just take a prenatel and enjoy the tastes of the foods in their natural richness.

There is some concern that high-dose vitamin C supplementation during pregnancy can result in scurvy (a vitamin C deficiency) in newborns. Exposure to high doses of vitamin C can increase the body's ability to metabolize vitamin C, and when vitamin C intake is reduced to normal levels, a deficiency may result. The maximum recommended vitamin C dose for pregnant women is 1800 mg per day (for women 18 years and younger) or 2000 mg per day (for women 19 years or older).

If you are pregnant, it is always a good idea to have a discussion with your healthcare provider before taking any medication or supplement, including vitamin C supplements.

I personally believe it's important to avoid ALL artificial additives (flavors, colors, sweeteners, preservatives, etc.), esp while pregnant and nursing. Those nasty chemicals have been shown in studies to contribute to conditions such as ADD in children.

As a dietetics student, I learned that high amounts of naturally-occurring substances such as vitamin C can also be damaging. You don't want to go too high over 100% of the RDA. Some of those supplements contain them in the 1000s of %! Crazy.

Bottom line: stay natural. No chemicals, and nothing in amounts higher than what you would find naturally occurring in foods. Maybe take a trip to Whole Foods to find a substitute for those water drinks that do not contain any icky chemicals. And congrats on wanting to be careful for your precious baby!!
