D.P.
Put it this way--you remember the commercial, the tag line, the song AND the changed spelling. Yep, I'd say the ad dept's job is done--and a success! LOL
I love Luvs diapers, but their new advertising is SO DISGUSTING! I'm wondering if I am just being an unreasonable prude, or if others feel this way.
If you haven't already guessed, I am referring to the animated commercial with babies having a "pooping contest" to see who can blow the biggest load in to their diaper, with judges holding up score cards, all set to that WONDERFUL classic "Whoop! There it Is!" by Tag Team. (Yup, I still own that tape single. Remember tape singles? Ahh...)
Also, their new catch phrase on their boxes is "Heavy-Dooty Protection" ...notice the clever change from "duty" to "dooty."
I mean, who do they think their target audience is, a bunch of ten year old boys? I am so disgusted by this advertising, and every time I change a diaper I think of it! I wrote them a letter explaining why I thought it was so juvenile and crass, and got basically a form letter back saying "thanks for your input."
So, am I the only one?
***Julie B, you've inspired a thought in me. We all know we need toilet paper, tampons, diapers, deodorant, soap, toilet cleaner, etc...I really think they just ought to quit advertising ALL of it! I mean, you know you need it, you have to buy it, and do commercials HONESTLY influence what brand you are going to buy? Hmm...I wonder.
Just to let you all know (since someone mentioned it...) :) :) I HATE seeing saggy diapers on children, and I'm the type to change it when it's wet or dirty, not when it's at its breaking point. I never thought of the commercial like that, but you are right...that just adds a whole 'nother disgusting aspect to it.
**Also, I should add that I still love the actual Luvs diapers (I agree that they are great for what they're advertising), now I just hate their advertising and packaging. I think sticking with "great leak protection" let us know just fine without having a poop blowout contest.
I seriously don't find it clever or amusing!
Why am I so heated about this? I don't know, it just offends my sensibilities as an adult.
Put it this way--you remember the commercial, the tag line, the song AND the changed spelling. Yep, I'd say the ad dept's job is done--and a success! LOL
It is creative advertising and it works (negatively or positively)
Prime example is on this post...... those who have not seen it will google it to see it. Yes it is a silly ad, but it gets attention and that is the point.
Try to lighten up and just change the channel. There are a lot more things out there to get all fired up and worried about.
I haven't seen the commercial but I think it sounds hilarious...I mean, who with kids doesn't have multiple conversations about bodily functions every day?
It was probably created by the same man who came up with the "Have a happy period" slogan (and you know a man came up with that because no woman in their right mind would be thrilled and celebrating their period, unless of course they had a 'whoopsie'.)
I am the minority I guess, I thought it was funny. No I don't have the sense of humor of a 10 year old boy either.
I hate seeing saggy diapers but sometimes when my girl goes...it's all at once, and Luvs have never leaked on me (I love pampers too but when she got older they leaked b/c they didn't fit her that great). So please don't think I let my girl run around in pee or poop, b/c I don't...it's like an all at once thing.
So when I saw the commercial I thought how funny because sometimes kids really do fill the diaper at once like that, they don't leak, and that makes for a happy baby and momma! Whoo hoo celebrate.
I didn't start snort-laughing holding my belly, falling on the floor like it, I just thought it was a huh, thats sort of funny because it happens type of like it.
Edited: I don't know why you're so heated about it but take a breath and relax! LOL (and i mean that in a nice way..not in a snarky way). The only thing I can think of is maybe writing another letter telling them you did a "poll" and got X amount of responses that agreed it was disgusting, and that your considering switching diapers because you can't get that image out of your head when you grab the Luvs diapers?
But it got enough attention from you alone that many people have now google'd it just to see what you're talking about right? That means it works. That is what advertising is all about :)
So, I must be the only one, I think it's kind of funny and pretty creative. Lets face it, all babies at one time or another, have woken up in the morning with a loaded diaper and wet jammies and sheets, it just happens. I use luvs and love them, and will continue to. There great diapers. So, the add isn't offensive or gross at all to me.
I think it's hilarious! If you don't like it, turn the channel when it comes on or get up and walk away. I don't know what's so disgusting about it. Kids poop, adults poop, sometimes babies have blowouts, the commercial is saying the diapers prevent blowouts no matter how big. If you've ever changed a baby from head to foot covered in poo I would think you would appreciate the new commercial claiming theses diapers won't allow that to happen! I think this is kind of a ridiculous post.
I actually like that commercial. It's funny and clever. My husband thinks it's the most retarded thing though.
My husband and I often see commercials and then look at each other and say,"who got paid for THAT idea?" Sometimes they are just stupid. You did the only thing you can and wrote a letter. I guess the next best thing, as a consumer, is to stop buying them. But, you seem to like them so I guess we just have to wait until the next commercials come out.
L.
Sorry I'm gonna go with a who cares. We tell our toddlers all the time do you have to go poo poo, pee pee or dooty... or some other little cutsy word in our culture. Half the shows about raising children do. So I don't see how that is much different.
But I've seen the commercial and I didn't care. It's just a commercial I guess. If they had graphic sex maybe then I'd form an opinion.
Ok I'm apparently a 10 year old boy now. I just think it's funny because I have had to deal with daily and even hourly blow outs by my son. So I find it humorous. Especially since no disposables kept anything in. I switched to cloth and I haven't had a blow out in almost a year.
And yes, sagging diapers is disgusting. I can't believe parents ever let their child's diaper get that full or sit on their childs skin for that long.
What about the Charmin commerical where the red bears wipe their butts . . . I think that one is a little weird.
I think it is funny. The good things is, if you don't like it you can always change the channel or buy another product. That is why I love this country.
Oh I totally agree...I cannot believe what companies ad execs are getting away w/putting on tv & the stations that allow it are just as bad. I thought the teddy bear toilet paper ad was bad enough but this is just too much! If you're a prude then so is a lot of others who find it revolting. If that makes me a prude then so be it, I say we're not being prudish at all...we just have a lot more dignity & tons more decorum & are well-mannered as to what needs to be said & how, publically. It's called being tactful I believe. Too bad other people don't seem to care about that anymore, that is, after all, contributing to what's wrong w/this country these days. You did right on writing them a letter, I think I'll do the same. I think if enough people complain publically, something might be done??? After all the complaints & lawsuits over smaller, trivial things I've seen about on the news, what's one more thing to publically protest against. As for the target audience being 10 yr olds...well seems to me a bunch of juvenile (probably men) came up w/that. I don't think a woman would (course I'm just guessing...). I too did think the other day 'why' do they even advertise personal care products, I agree, just saying what's good about it is just fine & gets the point across. Good point!
I've had products that I've loved and sometimes the ads for them are just awful. Sometimes a company acts like a toddler - they don't care what attention they get, positive or negative, as long as they get the attention.
It also makes me think the companies upper management is very out of touch with their public when they approve ads like that - you can bet no one on that committee has ever changed a diaper. Maybe they should spend some time at a day care changing diapers all day then see how funny their ad seems to them afterward.
You are not the only one. I think it is extremely distasteful and gross. My kids are no longer in diapers but i was very offended by this gross advertisement.
You are right girl. I feel the same way
I've never seen the ads, but they do sound gross! I also haye the Charmin bears and maxi pad commercials showing just how much "liquid" (blood) the pad can hold. Nasty!
I agree its disgusting. I saw it and laughed the first time but that was it. It just irritates me when i see it now so I change the channel. :) I don't think its right to target the audience in that way-its innapropriate and gross! I liked the commercials where they had the moms talking about the economical choice of the diaper and it showed all the cute little babies crawling in the grass--that is actually the commercial that stood out for me where I wanted to try that kind of diaper. I wouldn't have bought this diaper if I saw the commercial they have now.
Thanks for posting! I am glad I am not alone!
M
Sorry, but its funny to me.
I agree, it's definitely a retarded commercial.
retarded 1.mod. bad; defective. :
Ha ha ha.....yes I have seen the commercial. Looks like the advertisement is working just fine. Your talking a about it Now all mamapedia is too! Good or bad people will remember it.
I think it's so very interesting that so many of you were saying that you are "disgusted" by this cartoon of a commercial for Luvs when Pampers has a commercial of a baby boy in a Jeans diaper and sexy women.... now, that's one to be disgusted by. we shouldn't be encouraging THAT!!! the other one is just what happens in everyday real life with babies and we all talk about it to each other as moms about the blow-outs our babies have had and what diapers worked or didn't work. i'd much rather read that ppl were upset by the sexualizing of a diapered baby on tv by pampers... just my 2 cents.
To me the commercial wasn't funny and that was all but now I think about it make me wonder how many parents leave their little ones with big dirty diapers because according to the commercial it holds a lot.
:(
I think it's pretty juvenile. It's irritating when good products have bad advertising that you don't want to support. I'm glad you wrote a letter, even if you got a form response back. It will input thier next add campaign:)
I was wondering who thought that advertisement was a good idea bc it has bothered me since day one.
I CAN NOT STAND THAT ADVERTISEMENT!!!! It is horrid, and disgusting.
wow really? its a commercial
I have mixed feelings about it. It is kind of funny as in our private home we talk goofy like that. But for it to be a public ad I did find very odd. It seems more like a spoof commercial you'd find on YouTube! LOL Yah, I thought it was a bit much.

I think it is funny and guess what, it got your attention so much you wrote about it on mamapedia!! I suppose mission complete in the advertising dept. lol. I think there are far more important issues to be concerned about. loosen up :)
I haven't even seen it yet...but sounds kind of silly. I hate seeing saggy diapers on kids too but have to stop to remember that some people can't just run out and buy diapers whenever they choose. Sadly, they may not be able to afford them often so have to make them last as long as possible. Heartbreaking.

Agree, its ridiculous. & thats coming from the queen of tasteless jokes.
I had a Luvs exclusively diaper wearer & I eventually found that Walmart's Parent Choice are exactly like Luvs (but even cheaper).
I don't like it either. It just bothers me and I can't figure out why.
I don't get diapers. Have you really looked at some of the name? "Little Movers" with a Pooh theme?
I don't know, yes I think Luvs is targeting the single dads? It's really tacky.
Back in the 70's while I was growing up, burping was rude, farting even ruder. Cussing was around but the F word was off limits in front of anyone you had respect for, not like now where they don't think twice of saying it in every conversation. Now days it seems that they have contests to see who can be the grossest. Not only do boys burp to get laughs but so do girls. It isn't surprising that the advertising is now coming out from those groups who never learned that class has to do with behavior not how much money you have. The younger generation will never understand it until their own children grow up and start even grosser behavior to shock people and they start seeing that on TV. The other posts are right though... you remember everything about this disgusting commercial so it sells their product.
I haven't seen the commercial & have no intention unless it happens to come on TV sometime. I won't google it just to watch it. But, it does sound pretty childish. I even have other ads that bug me every time I see them. My husband laughs every time he sees one of those really awful commercials. Just think-this one made it-what were the other ideas that didn't.
All I can say is "Thank goodness mine is 13!". You are right-it's insulting. It seems they are using the Jerry Springer marketing model: always target the lowest possible denominator. Depressing thought, isn't it.
I think it's a stupid commercial, concocted by frat boys. I realize that they need to advertise that their diapers hold in leaks, but come on. All I can think of is how gross that is, and how it might make some parents think they can let their kid fill up a diaper before changing.
A lot of "sensitive products" have come up with much better advertising that isn't so crude.
tell them!
i don't pay attention to diapers any more, but back in the stone ages when i was using 'em, one of the biggies (luvs or huggies) ran a brief campaign where they referred to poop snafus as 'messy BM leaks.' i guess it was the opposite strategy from this silly one, they were apparently trying to appeal to grammatically correct mothers, but the visceral images conjured up were just too much. the ads got pulled after just a couple of months.
makes you wonder what ad geniuses come up with this stuff.

I totally agree with you!!!
I am also upset by the cell phone commercials that show a woman breaking up with her boyfriend by texting and them posting on facebook AND the Mom tells her husband her parents moving in, then telling the daughter they are taking her room. The whole attitude is your feelings don't matter, but I have unlimited texting and email with my new plan. Way to teach kids to be compassionate.
That commercial is horrible. And no, just because people will google the commercial now, doesn't mean they will buy the product because of the ad. Hopefully it's made people boycott it to encourage them to get a better child to do their next concept for free-who thought of that-obviously not some creative mastermind. I hope they didn't get paid (yeah right). Personally, I always buy the Target or Wal Mart generic and have had no problems whatsoever. I don't get paying so much more for any of the brands. They get all go in the diaper disposal just as quick.
I'm with you. Hate those commercials. I'm not sure if their advertising department thinks it's cute or funny, but I really think it's neither. Yuck!
I'm totally with you. I hate that commercial. My husband thinks its funny, but I can't stand it and fast forward through it every time it is on (thank you, DVR!)
Also, if I'm not mistaken, the words to the song you mentioned have been changed to "Poop! There It Is!"
I am there with ya. The first time I saw it I was totally appauled by it.
I'm with you! And in the last few years, I have seen tons of commercials that are just in poor taste!
We switched from cable to streaming Neflix, no more stupid commercials to endure!!! :D
guess I never pay that much attention or just haven't seen it! It was good that you wrote otherwise they don't know their customers views.
I like Luvs too - however I'm really cheap and buy what's on sale with multiple coupons (Super Target here will take more than one coupon AND expired coupons!) so sometimes it's Luvs or Pampers or Huggies or Walgreens or Target (although i'm not as impressed with these as a lot of ppl are!).
Someone wondered how many parents leave their kids til their diapers are saggy - I work at a center where licensing we change/check every 2 hours (which is what I do with my own daughter & before leaving house & before bed) you'd be surprised the diapers these kids come in! No wonder they get rashes!
I can't stand it either. My kids laugh. I will change the channel thats how much it bothers me.
Agreed ...it's nasty!! My husband even agrees!
I always hated the fact that they advertised their diapers as leak proof ... like if you bought them for your child you wouldn't have to change the diapers... just leave them in a puddle of their own urine...don't worry.. it won't leak.
I thought they were gross too.
no-my husband doesn't like it.
I am soooooooo with you. I hate it. But not as much as I hated the 'I poo in blue' Huggies commercial. Not cute at all in my opinion.
Disposable diapers in geneal bother me. (I'm not trying to knock people who use them!!! I know not everybody feels the way I do :) SO, all the advertisements bother me. The Luvs one is the worst. I just think it's ridiculous.
I saw this while watching Teen Mom. So that may be their target audience. I think it was aimed at 12 year old boys - LOL! And my son is 18, but from what I remember, I only used disposables when we travelled and Luvs weren't as good as other brands including generics. I think this ad is disgusting.
I can't say I've seen the commercial. I don't watch too much TV anyway but the commercial that blows me away is the one for toilet paper...the one with the bears and they talk about leaving "bits behind." I don't know about you or anyone else, but can you just imagine the people who came up this concept??? I mean, someone would have had to have first hand knowledge or experience with having bits of toilet paper left behind. I just think that would be a very embarrassing concept to bring to the table and talk about...and then to have everyone agree that they have the same problem too. LOL
I'll have to keep watch for this commercial you are talking about.
i know that comercial. I think it is stupid but I dont let it bother me. I dont really care for luvs diapers. I thnk they are thin and leak to much. I do hate the toliet paper comercial (I cant think what brand it is for) where it is women talking about toliet paper breaking when you use it, and this brand is thicker so it will keep you clean while you are getting clean or something dumb like that. its like seriously I am going to wash my hands after I go to the bathroom anyway so why would I be uber worried about the toliet paper keeping my hands clean! dumb!
I am with you there....Some commercials take it way too far! Good for you for complaining...I have complained and have written letters in the past as well!
Hate that commercial!!!!
Disgusting commercial. And really, encouraging people to leave babies in their diapers until they're sagging down to the floor??? The Charmin one with pieces left behind is another that just says TMI to me.
I think the Commercial is cute but I don't like the new diaper because they aren't as absorbent as they used to be. ( I have a breastfeed toddler who can really pee!) The rest is kinda childish though but guess they want to make you smile/laugh I'm guessing.
im sorry but i got a kick out of this. i thought it was very funny and kinda of cute. i also love that they changed from blues clues to the monkey on front of diaper. i only use Luvs great diapers and great price. its just an advertise ment, dont let it get to you.lol
Soooo glad I saw this one.
I saw that a few times before I actually watched it and thought oh my gosh that is disgusting. I agree with Julie B. too funny. Why do we need the advertising for the necessity stuff.
I do think that some of the marketing works. I have caught myself buying certain kleenex brands that promise me a less chapped nose etc.. lol.. But I agree the latest LUVS is totally terrible...
Though I guess if you were a young mom that didn't want to change your kid's diaper more than once a day... it might be worth it...
JUST KIDDING!!!!
Lol I was surprised by it as well, but it got your attention right lol. There is so much competition they have to stand out!
I am totally with you. I always thought advertising was supposed to be targeted at the audience who would be purchasing the items, but if adult women between the ages of, say, 18-40 are the main target here, this advertising is WAY off. My 10 & 11 year old kids barely even think it's funny & I, like you, find it just gross.
I haven't seen it. Now I'm going to have to Google it!
There are a lot WORSE commercials out there, so this one is the least bit concerning to me. Sex is the typical selling style. Sex sells doritos, cars, shape up gym shoes, make up, perfume, cheeseburgers, etc. I barely can have the t.v. on anymore cause my 3 & 5 yr old girls are glued to the provocative commercials.
Have you sent letters to the companies that use sexuality in their commercials?
Maybe everyone should write to them (email) and complain about it you might even get a coupon for a free box or something or even give them ideas of what you would like the ad to be maybe you will become rich!
hah! I totally agree, the first time I saw that commercial I was totally grossed out. plus, from my experience, their diapers leak the worst!
My husband and I have the same exact feeling about this commercial as you- utterly disgusting. Advertising has become a lot like most Hollywood mainstream movies- unoriginal, unfunny and depressingly ghetto-fied. Let's not forget Colonel Sanders dancing and rapping on a fried chicken bucket, Orville Redenbacher talking to us from a microwave and Fred Astaire dancing with a vacuum cleaner. When you're out of ideas, make dead people dance and/or rap, and throw in some fart humor for good measure!
