Iron Supplement?

I had a work physical and my health report recommended that I take an iron supplement for iron-deficiency anemia. I went to the store to get some iron tablets but there are so many different kinds - the iron comes from different sources of iron like fumarate or sulfate. There's also a slow-releasing formula. I called the doctor that did the physical but the nurse just told me anything would be fine and to ask the pharmacist. Does anyone take any iron supplements and could maybe recommend to me a good one to take? Thanks!

What can I do next?

When i was pregnant i was told that i had iron-deficiency anemia. my dr told me to take Slow-Fe. sometimes Iron can make you constipated and if you take the Slow-Fe you have less of an issue. I took it and had no problems. Ohh, Slow- Fe is a lil more on the expensive side, but works great! I got mine at Wal-Mart. Good luck!

A very good friend of mine has also started taking iron for the same diagnosis. She has learned that taking the supplement with tea actually blocks the absorption on the iron and taking it with orange juice (vit C) increases aborption. I do not know which supplement is best.

Take the liquid iron. It's easier on your body. You can also try taking Nettle tea which is full of iron. Red meat, spinach....

You should go to your medical doctor and get a prescription. My neice has been taking iron all her life. If you are anemic that is the best advice anyone could give you..........

C.,

I too need to take iron. My hematologist strongly recommended ferrous sulfate. I trust him very much, he is an EXCELLENT doctor, very thorough, very personable, and still in his profession to help people after all these years. Hence, I am passing on my info to you. I just buy Publix brand ferrous sulfate tablets and they work great! One last point he made was to make sure that they are taken EVERY day to keep your iron level up. Take care and good luck :)

Wow. You sure got a lot of responses. There are lots of helpful ladies on this board for sure!

The only thing I would add is to have some colace or stool softener (NOT LAXATIVE) on hand. I have been anemic my entire life and have run the gammit on iron supplements and have used my fair share of colace. :)

I agree with the slow fe advice. eating greens and the vitamin c - as Vitamin C is the key ingredient in assisting your red blood cells and their cell walls be happy and healthy! I wish I could use a cast iron skillet, however with my stovetop that just isn't an option!

Good luck!

I take slow-fe it has worked for me and hasn't caused any constipation.

well i been animic since i was little and it gets worse when im pregnant so i take Gentle iron it,s gentle on ur stomach . Also i only take it everyother day because it can cause consipation. Good luck . Also eat lots of high green foods that helps too.

I am taking an iron supplement from Water of Life. It is a water supplement so it doesn't upset my stomach or give me constapation. You can get it online at wateroz.com. My Uncle sells it and say your body absorbs 100% of it, but I found that I need Vitamin C to absorb it. I hope this helps.

An iron supplement that contains vitamin C is better absorbed by the body. Shaklee makes a very safe, effective product that doesn't cause constipation. But unless you are very anemic, you can actually take their Vita-Lea with Iron multi and not need that additional iron tablet. I see a Shaklee Independent Distributor listed in the MamaSource pages in Fort Myers. There are many around and all items are ordered on-line or by phone. Check out her web-site and give her a call. In the business listings, I found her under health and then nutrition.
