i am 26yrs old, all my life i had very regular periods 28 day cycles, i got pregnant and now have a 19month old, the first few months after i had my daughter my periods were normal and on time, then they started coming late, this month so far im 24 days late, and thats becoming the norm, i usually get my period about 25-28days late, weve been trying to get pregnant for a year now, and im not sure how i can find out when im ovulating, ive bought hundreds of dollars worth of ovulation predictors and they havent worked, does anyone know what the ovulation period would be with a 55-60 day cycle? thanks for any help

What can I do next?

Hi T.!

I am the polar opposite of you. I've been so irregular my entire life, that I originally went on the pill so I'd get periods. When I wanted to conceive #1 I went off the pill in August and never got my period (on my own) until the following March. I did end up going to a fertility doctor and never wasted money on OPT...as they're very expensive and hard to track when you're sooo out of cycle. If you've tried the Taking Charge of your Fertility method (charting) and that's not working, then I'd suggest seeking out fertility help. Irregular periods makes it very hard to conceive and if they can help you by medicating you might be sucessful! (Ironically after my first, I've been more regular...about every 2 months vs every 8 months!)

Good luck!

I had problems getting pregnant and then had a miscarriage. After several unsuccessful months I tried acupunture and after two months was pregnant. I went on to have another child after that. I think that my body was out of sync and the acupunture staightened it out. Good luck

Even before I had my daughter my "regular" cycle was 45 - 50 days.....so I know what you are going through. The best way for me was to chart my temps. You buy a basal thermometer (not just a regular digital because basal gives you a more accurate reading and take your temp every morning before rising from bed and write it down. Your temp spikes a few degrees the day you ovulate and you can usually see a dip in your normal temp the day before. By doing this over a 3 or more cycles you become to recognize when you are most fertile...then you try and conceive then. It took me 6 months of trying, by thats how I did it. I used www.fertilityfriend.com. Its free and you can chat with others trying to conceive and they have a system to enter your temps to get charts easier.....its great.

T., Typically women will ovulation and then have a period 14 days later. The first part of the cycle before ovulation, called the Follicular pahse, can vary in length a great deal but the second part from ovulation to menstruation, called the Luteal phase, is typically 14 days. (You could be have long cycles because you are ovulating twice which can happen). Are you still breastfeeding?

My suggestion for TTC is that you try charting your fertility cycle. There is a great book called Taking Chrage of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler that can help you get the basics down. The other suggestion I might make is accupuncture to help regulate your cycles, balance your hormones and TTC. I can recommend a local acupuncturist that does this type of work?

Another tip for TTC and regulating cycles is a supplement called Vitex. It is a liquid supplement made from Chastetree berry. It helps regular hormones and I have seen it help women TTC.

Hope some of this is helpful.

I am going through the same thing as you. I have a 16-month-old son and we started trying for another one when he turned a year (it took 3-4 months to get pregnant with my son) and I actually did get pregnant the first month but than I had a miscarriage in September. It took around 7 weeks after the miscarriage to get a period and now I am working on 8 weeks since my last period and still nothing. I keep on taking pregnancy tests, which have all been negative. My breasts are so sore today but I took a test yesterday which was negative so I am hoping it comes soon. Sorry to have babbled on and on. Before the miscarriage I could tell when I ovulated...look it up online how to tell with the mucus and that might help you out. Have you tried going to your doctor and seeing what they say? I know this is very frustrating especially with the long cycles because you keep on thinking you are pregnant when you aren't. Keep me posted!!!

Rather than spending more money on ovulation kits, I would recommend Toni Weschler's book "Taking Charge of your fertility", (available on Amazon, check out the reviews for it too) which describes in detail how to chart your cycle and pinpoint your ovulation date each month (even if you have a long cycle) I found the book incredibly informative and it helped me conceive my son almost immediately when we started trying. Good luck!!!

no, no, no....you shouldn't have cycles like that....go to your o.b. you just might need to have a dnc....it's like a cleaning out and after that you might get pregnant easier. but, have this taken care of before you go any further in trying to get pregnant....

good luck...

Dear T.,

I would recommend a book called "Taking charge of your fertility". I used it to get pregnant with my son and have stories of several women for whom it worked (also on the first try). I also have irregular periods when not on birth control and this is normal. This books helps you figure out when you are ovulating if not down to the hour, then close enough to get pregnant).
Here is the amazon link:

Good luck,

55-60 day cycles are not normal and could indicate something else (which also may be affecting your fertility). Have you gone to your OB-GYN about this? I would suggest that. The recommendations are to see your doctor if you are less than 30 yrs old and have been trying to conceive for a year. Hopefully, they can figure out what's going on. Best wishes for success for your attempts for baby #2!

Have you ever been checked for PCOS? I was diagnosed with it and went for acupuncture treatment and was able to conceive on the first try after a few months of acupuncture twice a week. Acupuncture also worked for 4 other people that I know and is a wonderful experience besides aiding in fertility.
