Introducing Eggs?

My daughter just turned 1 yesterday (7/30/08), and I was wondering is it o.k. to introduce eggs. We thought that we might like to give her scrambled eggs for breakfast. Do you think we should, or should we wait. She has no food/seasonal allergies. She is on whole milk for about 5 days. She has been eating dairy for a while, in the forms of cheese and yogurt with no problems. Plus she eats pasta and bread and stuff made with eggs and no problems so what do you think?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I spoke to my doc's office. They said the first day, give just egg whites. Then the second day give the yolk. This way if there is an allergy you know which one it it. But if she's allergic to egg white I wouldn't give her just the yolk. So we'll see how the weekend goes.

If it were me, I would give her some scrambled eggs. The only way to find out if the don't agree with her is to try them. If she doesn't like them or they give her a problem you will know not to give them to her again for a while.

When my daughter was about that age, I would soft boil an egg, and cook a small amount of pastina.
Spoon out the yolk, and stir into the warm pastina. She loved it.

i have been feeding my daughter eggs since she was one, with no problems. of course you should watch it just to make sure there's no weird reactions. but sounds like you will be fine. i also read somewhere that you should only give them eggs twice a week at most.

Hi,

My daughter is just about to turn one and my doctor told us at her 9 month checkup that we could introduce the egg yolk first. I think you have to wait until 1 for the egg white. Either way you should introduce them one at a time incase their is an allergy, you'll know what part of the egg it is from.

Hey D.,

Everything I've been reading RECENTLY (and have to say, no, I haven't collected the sources, just the info), says wait on eggs until 2 years.

I had to put recently, bc one Ped'n said okay on egg yolks (and a lot of literature said the same) and then another Ped'n said she doesn't give her kids eggs until age 2 (and have read lit to cover that).

I thought about giving my son eggs at age one, and after all I've read, while it would be nice to see him enjoy something we enjoy, I'd rather be safer than sorry, and since it isn't essential he get them, I'm not worried.

Kyah, what a beautiful name - my childhood friend's sister has that name.

Good Luck,
M.

It's OK to start eggs... My kids started eggs at about 10 mos.. BUT,,, you said she's been having whole milk for only 5 days... I'd wait a week or so more to see that there are no milk intolerance issues before starting another new food. That way if there are any reactions you'll be able to tell which food has caused it.

I always waited a couple of weeks when introducing the traditionally "risky" foods...

if your daughter has been eating products with eggs in them you probably safe to say that she does not have an egg allery. Was she eating normal jarred baby foor, not organic? If she was most of them have egg in them so let her enjoy scrambled eggs and toast!

My pediatrician recommended introducing eggs at 11 months (since we have slight allergies in the family and eczema). I was told to start with egg yolks and 3 days later add egg whites. My son turns 11 months next week, can't wait!

Hi D.-

My son turned 1 on 7/12 and our doctor told us he could have anything but shellfish and nut products. So, I gave him some scrambled eggs for breakfast and he loved them! No problems so far! I say go for it! Good luck!

After the age of 1 its perfectly fine to introduce eggs or anything as long as there are not nuts. Just be sure to use the rule of thumb: Give them a little, wait 3 days and if all is well continue to give it to them. Have fun with food.

i'd suggest to start introducing the hard-boiled egg (and begin with giving only yolk), then the whole egg and only then the scrambled eggs.

Hello~

From what I've read, you can introduce egg yolks earlier than a year and add whites at the age of one. Just make sure the eggs are fully cooked. Esp. since she has had not other food allergies, you should be fine.

Hi D.
I am sure you have heard that babies can't have eggs and that is why you are asking, Right?
Well, although allergy is one issue with eggs and the one you seem to know. There is also the salmonella issue. My advice is to check it out on an official website or ask your ped.

Hi D., you gave me great advice hope I can give you some in return. I think you should go for it and give your 1 yr old scrambled eggs. I did the same at a year for both mine. My son (17 months on sat) loves to eat them and they go down nice. When he was 1 he would choke so easy so eggs where my stress free food to feed him. It's also a food that is so easy for them to feed themselfs. Good luck. Have a great day! Georgina

It's okay (as far as our ped. says) to introduce the YOLKS at 9 months...if, after a week or so with no problems, then start with the white...so at 1, you should be fine...just remember, yellow first, then white.

Isn't it so fun trying new foods?!! I love the expressions on the babies faces!

Hi D.,

Eggs are fine for your daughter to eat. My little one started eating eggs after her 9 month check up. As long as there are no allergies etc.. you are good to go. So scramble those eggs and let her have a blast feeding herself.

Of course you can give her eggs. I've been giving my twin boys eggs since they were 8 months old. I've scrambled them and I've made them omlet style with just a little bit of cheese. They love their eggs.

I say go for it. I started giving my daughter eggs at the same age and she loves them. We have had no problems as far as allergies. I feed them to her plain, no salt and she eats them right up. Good luck!!

according to my pediatrician, children can have egg yolks after 9 months and whites after 12 months (as long as there is no history of egg allergies in the family). So, I started giving my son yolks (scrambled eggs, french toast coated with yolk/milk) after 9 months and he seems to really like... so I say go for it! I would probably try the yolk first for a few days and the whites next, since that seems to be the recommended progression. I believe it is recommended to have 3-4 eggs/week.
