This is a difficult subject because I am a teacher in the Oceanside Unified school District. I truly and honestly believe their are some amazing teachers in this district that try so hard to give all the opportunities and support to their students. I do agree with one of the other responses, that there is very little parent support, which can lead to other issues. I am also a mom now and there are some schools I wouldn't send my boy to. Some of the ones I would are Palmquist and South Oceanside. That doesn't mean there are not other school that are good, these are just two that I really like. I did attend school, Elem. through High school, here but things have changed. I don't think I would send my little boy to middle school or High school in Oceanside. I hope this helps

Hi J., we are in the same boat as you, except we already live in Oceanside. My daughter starts school next year and we have decided that we absoultely will not put her in any of the schools in the Oceanside district. I believe she will not benefit from any of the Elementary schools here. Please if there is a good school, and I am talking about good API and CST scores, please let me know as well. We are currently looking at Carlsbad or Poway school district, which means we will have to move, but my kids are worth it. One of the websites where I am doing my research is www.GreatSchools.com. I personally believe that my kids will be put on the back burner in this district. My neighbors kids go to San Luis Rey and I am shocked at the level of attention they receive in their studies. They come home and I sometimes babysit and they start their homework and they have no idea. I'll ask if their teacher went over it and they will say yes but real quick because they have to do the lesson in spanish as well. We are also looking into Private Schools and Home Schooling. We want the best education for our kids and I believe it is not in the Oceanside School District. But please, if anybody does know of a good quality elementary school, let me know. (By the way, yes I did go to school in the Oceanside School District and graduated from OHS)

I really like the Vista Unified schools, my sons go to Rancho Buena Vista, and my oldest daughter started Kindergarten at Breeze Hill (off Melrose by the court house) Rancho Del Oro is in the Oceanside Unified School district, I don't know much about it other than the high school has some State championship sports teams :-).

Where I live is close to the border between Oceanside and Vista but the school district is Vista Unifed. I think you will be happy with the schools in the area that you are looking at. There are some schools in VUSD that I wouldn't recommend but you aren't near where they are.

Good luck,

A.

So this is my best advice, first join a moms group in the area that has lots of good ratings and members and post in their message board and ask parents who have kids in those school district what they think. I know oceanside little explorers (its on meetup.com) is a good one I am in, and they have like 160 + members most with school aged kids and some with special needs kids. Also check this site http://www5.onboardnavigator.com/webcontent/OBWC_Search.a...=

enter your zip code and see for yourself who is a good school as far as tests and money and so on, even student teacher ratios.

Rancho Del Oro is great stay near college & mesa you'll be fine, don't go to far out there or you will be in a ghetto area. My friends live over there in different areas and you can tell best at night & some at day (people have graffiti on their property's stay away from those areas.

Good luck with your choice, and welcome back to oceanside.

WARNING:If your child may need a nurse ask the school if they have one there daily all day everyday!

I know my daughter who's special needs has an on call nurse for 17 schools in San Marcos district and the nurse told me they have a huge cut and that she was almost gone too.

It's all over and yes Carlsbad is great but a good drive and gas is supposed to hit $5.00 a gallon by end of summer in CA. So make sure you do your homework hun. And make sure you do your math too. :)

We've been in the Oceanside School District and have had fantastic luck with them. We lived in Rancho Del Oro a few years ago--really really liked it there! Enjoy!

There is a school in the East Oceansdie Area called Bonsall West Elementry. Brand new school, latest technologies, good scores and great teachers. Look up your schools on www.greatschools.net and you can compare all the schools in Oceanside and surrounding areas right from your computer at home. The Bonsall West area has lots of new homes around it too in the Oceanside area. Just 10-15 minutes East is Bonsall, CA that borders on the edge of Oceanside and Vista. Really great community also with a Brand new school (updating and replacing already established for over 100 year school),latest technologies, good scores etc. The old school house is even on the campus and used for community events. Fun and ecuational for the kids. Goodluck!

Bonsall West Elementry School (I don't have their number)

Hi J.,

My advice is to check VUSD website www.vusd.k12.ca.us and Osides school websites (don't know website). Plan ahead look at the middle schools and high school. We are currently in a fight to send our Staight 4(A) student to Madison Middle school (VUSD) Our home school is Rancho Manerva Middle 73% hispanic 70% low income. Madison 32% hispanic 27% low income. Check the school boundries where you plan to move. They list the boundries on the web sites. Good Luck!

Hi! I live in Oceanside and do a district transfer for my daughter to attend the Carlsbad USD. Many of the Oceanside schools are in near low income neighborhoods. It is not the teachers i fear, it is the peers, the other students. These kids do not have as much one on one and pareant involvment and thier behaviors are terrible. It is unfortunate, and my heart breaks for these kids. There are a few schools however that are great, and i belive in the Rancho Del Oro area you should be fine. The school really is the product of the neighborhood surrounding it.
Welcome back, may the Lord keep you all safe durnig your travelings (:

I live in San Clemente and have several friends who live down in the Oceanside area. The only thing I have heard repeatedly is that Oceanside schools are to be avoided and that Carlsbad schools are the best. I don't know if Carlsbad falls under Vista unified, but I'm sure you could find out.
Good Luck!

A great school in Oceanside, BUT NOT in the Oceanside School District is Bonsall West Elementary School. The school is part of the Bonsall Union School District and is only 3 years old. The teachers give a lot of attention to the kids, technology is a big part of the curriculum, Bonsall has kept music (even with budget cuts), and the school is still pretty small. You may want to look into it.
