Info About My Toddler and Possible measles...trying to Not Freak Out....
Hey mamas,
Well my baby will be 18 months on Sunday and he did get his measles vaccine at 15 months, but I am a bit concerned. He started with a really fine rash on his chest which I assumed was a heat rash bc it has been crazy hot. Then he got a cold and his appetite took a nose dive and he got a fever, but not a super high fever. Then yesterday I changed him when he woke and he was just covered in his diaper area in these fiery bumps, but there was no pain when I cleaned him up with a baby wipe and they haven't been affected at all by zinc oxide cream. I noticed yesterday that they were also on his inner thighs and down his legs a little. Today, they are all over his little legs. Anybody have experience with measles, can a baby get it even after being vaccinated? I was reading on the net that sometimes the first vaccination isn't quite enough and they can get it. Yesterday I noticed that he also has the bumps behind his ears. I am about to pack him up for the doctor, just wanted some input. Are there other possibilities, an allergic reaction, a diaper rash gone crazy. I honestly am at a loss bc my kids have rarely ever had any diaper rash and I have never seen anything like this. Any advice or info is much appreciated....thanks....
So What Happened?™
I never thought is was a reaction to the vaccine bc he had that three months ago, so that would have been very unlikely by now. I took him to the doc and found out he has two different rashes, one is an allergic reaction to who knows what and the other is a viral rash but not measles. The doc did blood work to check if his platelets are low so gotta get the results of that and he is on Benadryl. So no measles, no hand foot mouth and nothing seemingly too serious, just a tired little baby covered in bumps :(

You should never play internet doctor. You are doing the right thing taking him to see the pediatrician. I hope everything works out!

90% of people who contract the measles are vaccinated. So yes, it *could* be measles, I would be headed to the doctor too! Good luck!

Could be a reaction to the vaccination most likely. The rash doesnt itch or burn when you have measles, it is the result of the fever that generally preceeds the rash. I'd call the pediatrician and just ask. My kids both got measles, slight cases, several years after their vaccination. I had all the measles when I was a kid, lots of us were out of school for a week or two during the school year. I just remember having a high fever and my mom doting on me with the whole cool cloth to the head thing and lots of jello shots :)

It could be a reaction to the shot (reactions do happen and are no reason to stop vaccinating). But a child must have TWO doses of the vaccine for lifetime "coverage." If he has had only one so far (and at his age one is the appropriate dose and he'd have another one coming up) he may indeed have measles if he was exposed to them and they are very communicable. Measles cases are on the rise in this country and abroad due to parents not vaccinating. Have him seen immediately, today and not tomorrow, to find out either way, and keep him away from everyone else until you have a diagnosis. Whatever happens, be sure he gets his second dose for lifetime coverage.

This links to an article about the current rise in measles cases in Britain and the rest of Europe. It's due to lack of immunization and the young adults who weren't given shots as kids.

Get your little one to the pediatrician for a diagnosis of this rash. If he has not been exposed to another child with the measles, it probably isn't it. But other germs that cause rashes abound out there, ones that there is not a vaccine for, and you need to know which one he has and how best to treat it.
So sorry - I know you are worried. Thank God most people have their kids vaccinated for measles - it's a scary disease.

take him to the doctor. it could be a whole host of things...a lot of baby illnesses come with a rash so you'd wnat to get the right diagnosis asap.

There are 5 different forms of the measels and vacinations only cover 2 of them. The other 3 are a more mild form. This could also be hives. It is best to have him seen by a doctor.
