Infants in Glasses, Common?

My oldest daughter will be 2 next month and she has had glasses since she was 10 months old. She is extremely far sighted with one eye way worse than the other, therefor we had to put her into glasses to avoid a lazy eye. She has adapted well and asks for her glasses as soon as she wakes up. We went for her 2 year eye check today and asked if we were going to have to watch our 6 month old daughter for the same problems. The dr told us it tends to run in families and decided to look at her quickly. He told us to come back in 3 months to have our youngest checked to see if she needs glasses for sure. I'm just wondering if there are other families out there with kids this young in glasses. I have gone through the usual mother concerns, was it something I did wrong? Could I have avoided this problem? but the dr has assured me that it is purely genetics. There isn't anyone else on either side of our family with this kind of eye problem, so it just seems strange. I guess I would just like to hear from others who have experienced this as well, especially at such young ages.

So What Happened?

We had the 3 month check yesterday and found out we will be getting glasses for our second child, now 9 months old. I won't deny it was a let down, but we still thank God that she is healthy and it is only glasses. Questions in public about our 2 yr old were just finally starting to slow down. Here we go again! Thanks for all the supportive responses. They were reassuring!

I am a mother of 4 children. One of my twin girls was put into glasses at 10 months also. Same reason as yours. She is the only one of the kids to get glasses that young. She is now 18 wheres contacts, but she does have to have her eyes examined every 6 months because of drastic changes in her prescription. Not sure if that has anything to do with her going into glasses at such a young age or not. It is nothing you did it just happens. Good luck.

You have done absolutely nothing wrong! If your doctor says it's genetics then it is simply a fluk somewhere in the genetic line. Though no one (that you are aware of) has any eye conditions in your family, maybe both you and your husband's families are carriers.

My daughter had to wear glasses at 2months old, or she would get a lazy eye. My son also had to wear glasses at 2 months old also. I went along with it, but then my kids were complaing as they got older. I went to Froedtert Hosiptal they are the best. Both kids had to wear patches on there eyes to get then strong. One eye at a time. Both ended up getting Surgery, because the nerve in the back of the eye was not deveolping. Froedtert Hosiptal found the problem and fix it. If I would of contiune with just glasses, both of my kids would be blind today. However they now have 20/20 vison. In the beginning I was told it was in the genes. Take then to Froedtert.

I have a friend with the same situation. She is actually taking her kids to a craniosacral therapist to alleviate the problems. I don't think you could have done anything different. Don't blame yourself! I would check into chiropractics if I were you and they could help you find a craniosacral therapist.

I do not have kids in the same situation, however, when I was in highschool, my best friends mom did daycare and both siblings had glasses they both had them at about the same ages you are talking about.

hi,
my daughter is 15 months and got glasses about 2 months ago. her one eye just went crossed one day and thats why we brought her. she is farsighted they said but i am still confused on why this happened just out of no where. she has a follow up visit next week to see if the glasses are helping at all. if not they were talking about surgery but i am nervous about the whole thing. my 3 year old has no vision problems so its very strange. she does very well though with keeping them on.

Hi, We are in the same boat. My daughter is just over one and she is getting glasses already. She is far-sighted and has started lazy eye development. It is sad but I am trying to see the positive in it too, she will be able to see so much better! We do not have her birth records or family history but it seems very likely to be a genetic thing. It is ironic to me that I wear glasses for hyperopia and my bio son does not but our adopted daughter does! Go figure. Good luck!
