Does anyone know anything about infant potty training? Has anyone tried starting late, say, 6 months? I'd appreciate your feedback on the topic--preferably if you have tried it.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Actually, I learned about it from some people that learned about it from the Maya Indians of South America when they were missionaries. They tried it on their 4th and 5th children. I wish I could have tried from birth, but basically, if she goes in her diaper, fine, if she goes when I put her on the potty, great. I'm trying to train her with making a certain noise when she does pee in the potty (which might be anywhere from 3-5 times in a day) and then congratulate her with lots of kisses and giggles, but if she doesn't, I don't make a big deal of it. If you want to read up on it, just google "infant potty training" and you'll find plenty. I just wondered if someone here had tried it, that's all. Also, in response to the question about night time, I just use a disposable at night and that's it. Until she's old enough to get out of bed on her own, I'm not going to try night time training! It's bad enough when she wakes up starving at midnight! Now, when will that end, I wonder....

I read about this and tried it when my baby was a newborn. It was very time consuming and it didn't seem to work. Then when she was 7 months, I put her on the potty again. It was just to show my 2 yr old niece that babies couldn't pee on the potty but "big girls" like her could---well, lo and behold my baby did it! So we kept on doing it. Sometimes she went, sometimes not. My pedi didn't agree and said it was a waste of time, yadda... It probably was but we saved a ton in diapers! After we started poos in the diaper all but stopped! She officially was pee trained after she was 2 (meaning she would just go potty without my prodding) so truly it didn't really save time on that. All in all, it just saved me money on diapers and from having to clean stinky diapers. She wasn't really trained until the average time.

I did my own version of infant potty training. When my daughter was 9 months old I started to put her on the potty when she was trying to go poo. For me I could tell when she was going because she would stop what she was doing make a red face and grunt. I decided that if I could tell when she was going poo why not put her on the potty this way there was less of a mess to clean up. Every time I took her I was also made the sign language sign for bathroom, I looked it up on the internet. It took about a week before she went poo on the potty and about a month before she went pee on the potty. She is now 16 months old not potty trained, but that is ok. She goes poo in the potty 90% of the time and pee 50% and she has even started to sign when she needs to go to the bathroom. She doesn’t always go when she signs but I bring her anyway. Since she is at the age of trying to figure out her independence I don’t force her to go when she doesn’t want to. I hope this helps.

Hi L.,
While I have not tried infant potty training, I have done a fair amount of reading on it, as well as consulting with my pedi. I think you would be wasting your time. First of all, an infant's bladder is much too small to hold a lot of urine. So, you would literally be spending most of your day in the bathroom with your child. Secondly, an infant is not developmentally able to express to you that he/she needs to go to the potty. How would you know that she needs to go, other than taking her to the potty every few minutes to try it? Again, you would be spending all day in the bathroom. Lastly, I think at this age, there are more important things to be working on...beginning to crawl, trying new foods, making new sounds, etc. I think potty training at this age would be much too stressful for you and your child. My pedi does not recommend even trying it until the age of 2, unless the child has shown an interest in it (unprompted by mom or dad). Most children are not fully trained (day and night) until the age of 3. Trust me, I have learned this the hard way. My 3 year old is just now starting to get up in the night to go potty.

Besides, what's the rush? They are only this age for such a short time. It's like a vapor in the wind. Cherish every moment and don't stress about potty training now.

What I have heard is that generally when you start at 6 months or so, the child ends up being potty trained around 2. I personally am starting later... there is no point in spending a year and a half when it could be 3 months later and they could be trained around the same time. Additionally, even IF they were trained at lets say.. 14 months.... do you really want your 14 month old to have the access to get out of bed in the middle of the night and go to the bathroom? I sure wouldn't! But if they were potty trained, you would need to!

Sounds stressful for everyone. I found life to more easier waiting for signs like my daughter taking her diaper off at 17 months a going to sit on the potty. You have to think about some of the other cultures. Some don't seem to let their children be children they are being trained for all sorts of things at a young age like those folks we're in war with they train their children for war and hating Americans as toddlers. The Chinese work on educating their children from infants. Enjoy the gurgles the first words, sitting up, crawling. My oldest is 19 and youngest 11 and thinking back at all the stuff we worried about.........lets me know why grandparents are so laid back. On another note I never heard of this potty training so young before. Sort of like the 80's everyone wanted to have their babies in water and watch them swim and then keep them in water babies swim class. So to each their own if you feel strongly about this then I wish you well, keep us posted on how it went.

I have heard of this, and was going to try it, but you have to watch your baby for EVERY second of the day supposedly.

Look it up thru google, that is where I originaly found out about it.

Good Luck!

I was also going to try to potty train my daughter this young but another mom told me wait until they are old enough to tell you when they need to go potty. But hey we could try it and see how it goes. Good luck.
