Inauguration Day Events for Kids

Hello! Are any of you doing something special to celebrate Inauguration Day with your kids on Tuesday? My DS is young (16 months) but I am a second grade teacher and I want to do something special. We will watch Obama's swearing-in live, and I plan on asking the kids what they would like to be the first to do, like Obama is the first African American president. Any other ideas?

** A comment on what others have posted. This is only my third year as a teacher so I have never taught on Inauguration Day before, which is why I wanted some ideas.

What can I do next?

Here's a website with a lesson for gr 2:

There are more leeson plans there, but this met your grade level needs. I'm also a teacher:)

When Barack Obama won the election, we made a Barack Obama cake and invented some friends over to celebrate. I am going to let my kids skip their sports practice Tuesday after school, and we're going to be couch potatoes watching the inauguration events on the tv that I'll be taping. We will have another Barack Obama cake and we'll talk about today and tomorrow and how they tie in together. What a joyous event!!!!

How about reusing the kind of activities you planned for the last Inauguration Day?

I would say just continue your traditions from Inauguration Days in the past.

I am trying to come up with something as well. My kids are 2.5 and 4.5. I know the younger one will not remember, so I'm trying to focus more on something fun for the older child. The downtown library is having a party, but it isn't clear from the website whether it is a family event.

I'm planning to make red, white and blue popcorn for the kids to eat while we watch the inauguration. I also found this coloring page:

If you google "classroom inauguration activities", there are lots of other ideas out there.
Have fun celebrating this historic day!!
