In a *fog*...is This "Pregnancy Brain?"

Hello lovely and amazing mommas!

I am 6 months along and I am noticing more and more that I am becoming quite absent-minded. I have more difficulty focusing at work, and I am daydreaming a lot. I also feel kind of silly at times, often singing a little tune in my head over and over (current: the Thomas the Tank Engine theme song) and really wishing I could just "veg."

Is this "pregnancy brain?" I never had this experience with my first, so I am not sure.

YES!! I can't remember a thing to save my life. I have to write everything down on a big wall calander or else I wont get to where I need to go. I drop things, I am clumsy...bleh! I am farther than you, giving birth on Wed, but it just got worse for me! lol

Before I was pregnant, I used to write poetry all the time. Attended 2-3 open mikes (I was in a poetry group) a month. Felt incredibly competent with words.

When I was about 2 months along, I felt just plain stupid. I couldn't access basic words I used every day. I stopped writing and picked up watercolors for the first real time and made a book for my baby. Declined invitations to read poetry because I just felt dumb,especially after 4pm.

My girlfriend has her PhD from MIT, supergenius type. She has two kids and has told me that she's "permanently brain damaged" from the whole affair. Lucky her, she started out ahead of the game. And my brain *did* come back online... it just took a while. :)

Yes, it sure is, and frankly, it lasted for about a year after I gave birth -- LOL!! :)

It could be symptoms of low blood sugar. Forgetfulness, can't concentrate,
'zoning' or mind goes blank, feeling not so good after 3-4 hrs not eating and feeling better once you've eaten, usually a period of 10 minutes to an hour after youve eaten the blood sugar spikes and a person can get quite giddy, silly and/or unable to control laughter.
Low blood sugar runs with low cortisol. This is quite common in most people now adays and once you are pregnant you can become even lower on cortisol.
a 24 hour saliva cortisol test (NOT the A.M. blood test) can pinpoint low cortisol very easily and painlessly. If your doctor wont give you one, you can order it yourself on canaryclub.org. for about 100 bucks. It is worth checking- because low cortisol (in you) during pregnany means low cortisol in your infant. Infants born with low cortisol can have a variety of syndromes:
breathing difficulties/asthma/croup, Low weight, failure to thrive, feeding difficulties, GERD, blood sugar deregulation, SIDS, and sleeping issues, just for starters.

Ooooooooh yeeeeeaaaah. The cells grow back, but it takes awhile. My son's almost 8.....

I think it might be ! :) I worked in an office with my first child and things I had done for 2 years I was forgetting how to do! Or I would drive past my own street on the way home, silly stuff like that.

yes, it sounds very much like it. "pregnancy brain" is actually medically true. When you get pregnant the fluid in your body increases quite a bit. all of the extra fluid puts pressure on your brain and actually gives you a little bit of brain damage. hence why you feel so zoned out and forgetful!

I totally know what you are talking about. I just had my 4th baby 5 months ago, but I think I had it the worst with my 3rd. I have heard some anecdotal evidence that making sure you are getting enough Omega 3 fats will help. I have been supplementing throughout my last pregnancy and still doing so as I am nursing exclusively. I do think it has helped some this time around. I had to try something because with 4 kids now I can't afford to be spacey. Good luck and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.
