Ideas for Keepsake

I am wanting to take my children's baby bed comforter and make a keepsake for all three of my kids using it. I considered making small pillows, but wanted other suggestions. The comforter is white eyelet, slightly worn, with a ruffle trim. I don't want to store it in a box for years, but would rather make something so they each would have a momento. Any ideas?

So What Happened?

What great ideas you have given me!! I might actually use more than one of them. I am leaning towards the quilt idea, but not quite sure. THANKS SO MUCH for your awesome recommendations. I really liked them all.

My mother-in-law is a big quilter, so that is what came to my mind. If you have baby clothes of theirs, you could incorporate that, too . . .

I'm not much for sewing or crafting for that matter, but my friens has a couple quilts made out of her husbands old khakis, and one out of old jeans that his mother made for them. They bring them to football and baseball games and use them quite a bit. Maybe you could make squares out of the comforter, and use other things that mean something to them like an old favorite shirt or pants, some new fabric in their favorite color. Then quilt them together to make a throw size blanket. You could even stitch (if you have a fancy sewing machine, I would have to take it to a local business that does it) a patch with a little saying, Bible verse or a simple "love, Mom" on one of the patches. Maybe you could even use some of the lace trim to border this patch. ??
God bless.

What about a photo album for each one with this being the cover on it and their name, birthdate, weight, length etc sewn or stiched on the front of it? Good Luck!

R.,
could you cut it into pieces, frame it along with a picture of each of them in bed with it and write something about how each of them slept or how they woke up??
Let us know what you decide!

What about using pieces from it to make a quilt, mixed with other patterns.

It would be neat to use it to cover a scrapbook/memory album for each of them. Or you could frame part of it with school art work from years gone by around it for a boarder. Hmm now you have me thinking and now I'm going to have to go make a scrapbook cover for my 3 kids LOL. Good luck in what ever you decided to make. D. C. Marengo, OH

Either have it made into a wall hanging or find a quilter who'll make a quilt and use that as the center/focal point of the quilt.

cut it into squares, mix with squares from other sentimental or pretty cloth, then make into a bigger, new quilt that'll fit them for longer.

Why not make strips of it and use it toward a larger blanket for each of them. Incorporate other "heirloom" fabric with it to match whatever decor you want. Old pjs or favorite outfits can make really cute quilts. Another idea is to use the facing as a matte to a picture frame. The white eyelet would be adorable for surrounding each of their cutest baby pictures!

Have fun!

Not sure if this is what you are looking for but here is an idea I am planning on doing, once I can find someone to do this for me.

I still have all my son's receiving blankets and they're all very 'boy' like (light blue, sports, etc.). We used our receiving blankets all the time for swaddling, wrapping, covering, etc. We are done having children, so what we are going to do is take the receiving blankets and cut them into squares for use in a few small quilts. I would keep one of them (for future grandchildren, but not for another 25 years I hope), and then he could have one for playing on the floor, cuddling up on the couch, etc.

A small plush toy? You could look online for heirloom preservers. I know there's places out there who can turn wedding dresses into quilts. Some place similar might be able to help.

Hi R..
The pillow idea is very neat idea! If I would do something like that I'd embroider their names in the center or a picture of them in the center of it. With their birth name, date, time (kinda like their birth certificate)..that is really cool. Or I'd probably even put it in a big picture frame, like a big birth certificate. I think that's always cool and add a picture of them when they were first born or something. I'm gonna do something like that but as a murial in one of my rooms. But like a huge family tree. Good Luck!! And Happy Mother's Day!

I'm a seamstress., but this really was an easy project. I made a teddy out of my own "blankie". It was an old quilt my great grandmother made before I was even born. It was too worn and fragile to use on a bed anymore, but like you, I didn't want to just keep it stored away. I used antique buttons for the eyes, and other old linens for embellishments. It sits on a shelf in my daughter's room, along with other things I collected as a girl. You could find a simple pattern at any fabric store. Reduce the pattern for small bears, or mix it with other fabric things you've saved.

What about a teddy bear? Whem my mom died 15 years ago, my little brother was only 8. A friend of his therapist used my mom's favorite bathrobe to make him an adorable teddy bear that he still has today. I have always thought it was the greatest idea for a keepsake. Good luck!

Have you thought about cutting it down and making each one of them a newer comforter with pieces of the baby comforter from the original worked in?
Another idea would be to make photo albums for them using pieces of the comforter in the cloth cover for the albums.
Another idea, depending on the design of the comforter would be to take a section, picture, from it, bind it off and place one for each in a picture frame that can hang in their rooms, then amidst the family photos on the walls to be given to each of them as they start having children of their own for the children's rooms.
