One of the best gifts I got was a gift basket of things for the honeymoon. Beach towels, under water cameras, Fromer's Guide to Aruba, and sunblock. I really liked it. It isn't all that personal, but it is fun!

A thoughtful shower gift I've seen before was a basket of candles that went with a poem. The poem describes events that take place throughout the first year of marriage and at ehich points a certain candle should be burned. The bride and many guests got choked up. Here is a copy of the poem and I'm sure you could make a nice basket for the candles:

A basket of candles that come in a pair
In all different colors, for you two to share
The white ones burn first
They are wrapped in white lace
To celebrate your first married night
In your new chosen place.
The green pair is taller, and also much thinner
Burn with the first company you have over for dinner
The dark blue candles are for after your first fight
Use them to burn while making up all night
Pink candles set the mood and pave the way
For your first married Valentine's Day
Now, when your first year of marriage is through
the cream anniversary pair will light for you two.
Red candles aflame, both your futures are bright
Celebrate promotions you've worked toward with all of your might.
By this time we hope, maybe, just maybe
You can light the purple ones, on the birth of your baby.
And just when you thought you'd put these away
Take the light blue ones out for your fifth anniversary day.
Now just one more pair left for the big 25
The anniversary pair that will keep your love alive.
Congratulations bride and groom (enter names)
On the start of your forever
May the two of you always be happy together
And burn these candles
Just the way we said
But please don't forget - blow them out before bed!!

Not sure what your religion is, but you could make her a gift basket of Christmas decorations (ornaments, lights, garland, etc.) or something that is relevant to your religion. My aunt did this for me when I got married and it was great to have for our first Christmas and I always think of her as we decorate our tree.

Dear A.: Nothing shows that you care like a personalized gift. We embroider affordable one of a kind keepsakes for brides that are always a big hit at bridal showers. For example, lingerie satin bags with the bride's name are very popular and so are mini-pillows with the bride & groom's names along with wedding date (your name and love wishes on the back). If there is a place, or game you used to play together in childhood, I can embroider a motif that will bring those memories back. Let us help you make that personalized gift basket, we've been making them for years. Check us out at http://www.mercadventures.com/embroidery.htm And let me email you photos of our newest bridal personalized gift (not shown online yet), it's a tasteful garter: One of the ribbons reads the names and the other the wedding date (it can be done in blue thread for that something blue...). Feel free to contact me, even if for just more gift advice, I love what I do. Good luck with it. C.. ____@____.com.

Hello A.

You may want to check out my site, www.onceuponafamily.com/English, and click on Products/Browse by Occasion/Weddings & Anniversaries.

We have many gifts that you won't find anywhere else and they were created on making family traditions.

We have a family tree with actual leaves that they can write down the names of their family members and frame. This is also a great idea to have at the wedding for family members to help fill out.

There is a lovely 'Love Journal' that you can give the new couple for them to write down letters to each other about their dreams of their new life together. Also a Love Letters Box where they can keep momentos...

We also have a family recipe album and 'Recipe for Joy' cards. This album can keep both recipes and pictures of the family together making the actual meals. It's very sweet. If you have a favorite recipe, you could start the book off and give it to them as a gift.

Take a peek and good luck! :)

What I do for Bridal Showers is to purchase towels they have on their registry, and make them into the shape of a cake. Kind of like the diaper cake you see at baby showers. I take two bath towels, fold them in half lengthwise (together) and roll them like a jellyroll until they resemble the bottom of a cake and pin the ends together. Then, I do the same for two hand towels (that is your middle tier) and the same for two washcloths (your top tier).I buy thick, fancy ribbon to wrap and tie around each tier, and I also buy coordinating fake flowers that I straight-pin into the towels all around the 'cake'. I usually leave them plain, but you cold always add small gifts to either straight pin into the 'cake' or tuck behind the ribbon. Email me if you'd like to see a picture of one I have done.

Hi A.,

I love that you want to do something thoughtful for your cousin, even though you've recently grown apart a little. I loved the cake/towel idea, that could be really cool.

I just want to say one thing - I still haven't married my "husband" (we're big procrastinators), but most of my friends ARE married, and many say the same thing. They love the thoughtful gifts, but they also NEED the registered gifts. The list they put together is full of items that will make them really happy!

I'm not suggesting that money grows on trees, but maybe you could do something thoughtful & something of the registry too -that way everyone wins.

Have fun! Take care,
K.

I know that when I got married one of the best and most thoughtful gifts that I recieved was a doorknocker for our house with our married name engraved on it. It was quite a surprise and I love looking at it everyday, it reminds me of our special day.

Hi A.,
My girlfriend just got married and I have a poem that the bride reads and as the bride reads this poem there are fill in the blanks with numbers when she came to this she had to open a gift that finished the sentence. they were like cleaning products and things you find around the house. Then for the last sentence I changed it to be personal and the gift I put in it for her was a wedding album that I made for her to put her pics in with additional album to put the journy of getting married in....I think it worked because she cried from laughing so hard than cried when she came to the end and she loved it....If you want the poem let me know and I'll email to you....Good Luck.

A.,
In the giftbasket, you can put things she'd need for the wedding reception that she might not have yet. For instance, a tossing garter, a throw-bouquet. OR, you can put together some personal care items like foaming facial wash, facial mask. OR, you can put in other items like a wedding-photo frame, hand-painted wine glasses, a pair of tickets to a massage spa at their honeymoon destination. The possibilites are as much fun as putting it all together - have a blast!

Do you have any pics of you two of when you were little and now? You could get one of those double frames and put them side by side. You could get something small off of her registry and add your own ideas to it. Like: she registered for a fancy wine bottle opener, you add wine, cheese board with slicer, wine glass charms, etc.. Good luck.

When I got married some one put together a beautiful basket of christmas ornaments and a tree topper. I was married in August so at the time I didn't realize how great this gift was. But it has really been the best gift ever. Our 1st tree had only the ornaments that came in that basket (we were too poor to buy more). I just thought this was the most thoughtful gift I got.
