My Grandma turns 90 next weekend and I need to get her a gift. She doesn't get out much and she has everything she needs at home. Most of my relatives are giving her gift cards for Wal-Mart (she gets a lot of her Rx's there). One family member is already doing a scrapbook. I need some ideas! Your thoughts??? Thanks!!

What can I do next?

My Grandma celebrated her 90th in May. My Aunt made her a shutterfly book with pics of her from infant to 90. She also included pics of all the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
I bought her $90 in scratch offs. She loves scratch offs!

If you live near her, offer to do things for her, like driving to appointments, writing out her thank you notes, shopping, etc.

Does she not get out because she doesn't want to, she can't for health reasons or just doesn't have the opportunity? Depending on the answer to that, I would consider taking her somewhere--a nice restaurant, a museum she might enjoy (rent or get a wheelchair or one of those cart/scooters) or something she can't do on her own. My grandma just turned 89 and she likes going to restaurants but is shocked by the prices and can't go on her own anyhow. We periodically treat her to a nice meal. In the past, I've taken her to a movie, a play or the Science Museum, although she's getting less mobile and more hard of hearing. Does she like flowers? There are services that will deliver bulbs and/or fresh flowers once a month. You can sign up for a certain amount of time. Another thing I've given my grandma is a subscription to People magazine. She won't read books, but she likes gossipy magazines and has sticker shock with those too. Any out of state relatives so that she might need a calling card with minutes? I will watch for other posts since hopefully I'll be needing some ideas next May.

Edited: the beauty salon post reminded me that my grandma likes a gift certificate for a manicure and pedicure. She can't reach her toes anymore, but likes them to look nice.

My friend's grandmother just turned 90 and they took her skydiving! It was the craziest thing to see this elderly woman strapped to a young man with the goggles and everything preparing to jump.

If you're grandma isn't that adventurous try a day of shopping. Take her to get her hair done, then offer to take her to Walmart or where to do some shopping. I'm sure spending time with you and her great-grandkids would be a special day for her.

What about some stationary or a nice notebook where she can write stories to the grandkids or the family history?

We are celebrating my grandpa's 90th birthday this weekend. I made him a stepping stone from a kit and put our six month baby's footprints in it along with some decorations. Not the most exciting maybe, but it should last and can be useful by their garden.

The hair salon would be great, especially if she gets it set regularly.

I would either give her a framed pic of you and her when you were a child, her younger days, something that has meaning. Or I would give her a book about grandaughter's and grandmother's. Or....the neat thing that ppl are doing here now is going to a one night painting class. It is a 3 hour class where the entire class paints the same picture and it is done when you leave. You can give that to her as a gift b/c you painted it yourself. I would also write her a 'love letter' so to speak. Write her exactly how you feel and what she did for you through your childhood and lifetime. Tell her how much she means to you. Give her a good book with a bookmark. Give her a coupon book that you made yourself offering her things like "an entire day spent with me", "lunch with me", "cleaning your house", "day of shopping", etc If she is able, take a class with her...take a painting class, take a cooking class, a cake decorating class, etc I took a sewing class with my grandma. She already knows how to sew but we took a class that taught us how to make a particular item. My grandma also loves to paint so one year I gave her a book on paintings, new brushes, gift card for new paint, etc I also like to take photos of things she likes to paint like barns, lighthouses, etc She then paints them for a hobby and then sometimes she even gives them to me! I frame them, hang them in my house, and take pics of them in my home for her to see. She lives in Fla and can't travel anymore....
happy bday to your grandma, cherish her. My grandma means the world to me.

Hmmm.

Well ONE thought, is a tape recorder. Sit down and interview her about her whole life through. Long interview. Write it up when you're finished, and add photos.

The next generation might appreciate something like that too ;-)

Here is an awesome guide of thoughtful gift ideas that are personal and pretty original that I like. The ideas are also very simple but still show a lot of thought:
