My son will be one August 29th and I have no idea what to do for his Birthday. We have a big family and quite a few friends with children that we would like to invite. We thought about having a cook out at home, but we have a small house and it will be too hot for everyone to stay outside. Please Help...

Thanks!

I had the same problem...so I rented a covered area at a local park and had a cook out there. It was great!

For our eldest daughter we had a big party, inviting extended family and friends. She did NOT have a good time. Got lots of good presents, but it wasn't worth the hassle.

With our youngest, we had only a few family members over for homemade cupcakes. Very low key and easy and Meara had a great time.

If it were me I would only have a party with my family members only. But if you feel you need to invite friends too, then have two parties. One with your family, then one with your friends.
Have fun,

We didn't have parties for our children's 1st birthdays. We just made their favorite foods and had a small cake and played. Just family.

However, my friend is Korean and she says it's tradition to do HUGE 1st birthday parties, but the parties are more for the adults than the 1 year old. She invited adults to a restaurant for dinner and they all sang karioke. There were some kids, but mostly adults.

I guess you have to decide who you're doing the party for.... a 1 year old will just want people to play with them. And they don't care where. Too many guests could be overwhelming for him.

A picnic at a park would be lovely in August. Some parks even have pavillions you can reserve for a small fee. Hot dogs and potato salad would be easy.

We did a Teddy Bear Picnic for my daughters birthdays (they were 4 and 5 and there birthdays were only 4 days apart so we did both together). All the guest brought their own bears. The bears had their own table with pretend food, real cups/plates. And I made 10 little cakes for the guests(Tupperware has a round soup cup that is perfect for making little cakes, and it only takes 1 minute in the microwave to cook them) and I brought frosting, M&Ms, Gummi Bears, sprinkles etc and plastic knives and each guest got to decorate their own cake. I had a larger cake for the birthday girls to blow out candles and cut. It was fun. They played pretend with their bears and ran around the park.

My son's b-day is on August 21st and we are having a bar-b-q on the 18th. Burgers, dogs, and all the fixens out side at 6:00 in the evening. We are going to have a kiddy pool for the little ones to cool off.

I was in the same place you are in a few months ago. I was thinking the club house in our neighborhood, parks, in-laws house. But we decided that our son would be happier at our house.

Our house is small also but you just work with what you have. People won't mind that just as long as they get to see the birthday boy.

Good Luck,
J.

S. - Our daughter turned one in June and it was HOT! I would recommend either having the party in the morning or early evening. It is not as hot, and still a cost effective solution. Good Luck!

Have you thought about a rec center near your home? There are often rooms you can rent for very little money. They usually have a nice playground area too. It is a much less expensive route than a Chuck E. Cheese (plus, if I remember correctly, my daughter was terrified of CEC when she was one).

Good luck!

A cousin of mine reserved a pavillion at a park with spraygrounds for her 1 year olds Bday party, and it was great for kids of all ages. Hope this helps!

We did the cook out and it worked out well but our parties were in April and October. Frisco Commons has that picnic pavillion with picnic tables & grills. There is always a really nice breeze up there, and I know you can reserve it, I just don't know the cost.

You could do an open house at home-- a come & go type of thing with just cake and a few snacks-- maybe even stagger the times people were to come?

Just a thought! Good luck!

For my son's 1st, I only had family over in my mother's home and it was nice and fun. There were only a couple of children, so I didn't have to worry about big games...

All of our friend's also only had their families over for their child's 1st as well. I think maybe keeping it small for this time is simpler and most people usually understand this.

However, if you do want a large group of people to attend, you can always rent a place to have the party. You can go to The Little Gym or the bounce house places that make it really easy to host a party, they can get costly though when you atart to add on the extra services. August parties are tough, unless you have a swim party, it is hard to have them outside. You could always have it later in the evening when the sun isn't as hot, and you could have water ballon fights, slip'n'slide, water guns...

You could get a pavallon at the Hurst Aquatic Center and have it there, of course you would have to decide if you are going to want to pay everyone's entrance fee or not.
