I would like to make ice cream cone cupcakes for my daughter's 2nd BD, the ones where you bake them like cupcakes but stick cones on the tops before putting them in the oven so the cake bakes into the cone. Anyone who has done this before? How did it work for you? Any suggestions for what to store/serve these cones in/on?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Tami,
I made those a few years ago but, they were fun to do. I think I just used a normal cupcake pan to bake them in. If, my memory serves me I believe I stood the cone up and put the batter in those. Then to serve/decorate them I used a cake carrier upside down so, they won't fall over.

Have fun with the party and good luck!

Try making your cupcakes as usual only don't fill them quite as full, use the papers to make them easier to come out of the pan and carefully put your cone on top so it will stand upright. The cake bakes into the cone, you take the paper off and frost however. That's how my daughter did it and they came out great, nice and full, not flat. OOps! Just carry them in extra to go containers for sodas. Or take a cardboard box and cut little holes and stick the cone in. That's what we did, it worked.

No no no no no...... you pour the batter directly INTO the cone.

I don't know if there is a special way to do it, and I'm sure that someone sells some contraption that you're supposed to do it in, but all I did was stand them up on a cookie sheet. Pour the batter into the cone (of course, only about half to 3/4 full, as normal cupcake liners), and VERY STEADILY.... put the cookie sheet into the oven. That's the hardest part. You just have to make sure to pat the cone on the counter before you fill it... some cones have the flashing on the end... a little bit extra that will make them fall over if you don't break it off.

All I did was line them up on the table... the kids don't really care if they are displayed prettily or not. They like them in their HANDS!

PS... just read the response from LeeAnn C... the Cool Whip and sprinkles sounds AWESOME! Sigh... now I may have to make them just because... Hahahaha

Tami, you get the flat bottom icecream cones and put them into the cupcake pan or in a 9 x 13 pan as tight as you can and then fill the cones with the cake batter. I think you fill it just to where it starts to get bigger for the icecream.

Try it this weekend to practice. Fill them at different levels and see how they turn out. I did it for years when my kids were little.

Have Fun Marciab

We made these for my daughter's second birthday, too! I found the recipe on the internet, I think on the Family Fun website. You actually pour the batter into the cone and bake it that way--putting the cones in a mini muffin pan so they stay standing up. It was pretty easy, but time consuming. They were a big hit, though! To store them, we turned the ice cream cone box on it's side, and cut holes in it, so the cones could sit in there without falling over or bumping each other. We made them the day of the party so they didn't have a chance to get stale. I used a decorating tube with a start tip to frost them so they would look like soft serve, and of course added sprinkles!

I found this one:

Make your favorite cake mix as directed. Place flat bottomed ice cream cone in a muffin tin (to stand them up). Fill cones 3/4 full and bake according to directions listed on cake box.
When cooled, decorate with Cool Whip and sprinkles. Note: Quick and easy and kids just love them.

Here is the recipie off of the betty crocker box.
1 box betty crocker rainbow cake mix and everything that calls for
24 flat bottom ice cream cones
1 container betty crocker rich and creamy or whipped frosting

1)heat oven to 350 (325 for dark or nonstick pan). Place paper baking cups in 24 regular sized muffin cups.
2)make cake batter as directed - except fill each cup 2/3 full of batter. Place ice cream cones UPSIDE DOWN on batter in each cup.
3)bake 15-20 mins (cones may tilt on batter) cool compleatly, remove paper and decorate.
