I Was in a Bad Car Accident

Two weeks ago I was in a Bad car accident. Thankfully my two boys werent in the car at the time! But i hurt my knee and back very badly..I was rushed to the hospital from the scene becuase not only was i the worst injury at the time i am also almost six months pregnant with our third baby. I didnt have any problems during and after the accident with the baby i was given an ultrasound and everything looked ok and the heart rate was great. I turned down the x-ray on my knee because I know getting one done even that far from my growing belly can be very dangerous for the baby...So the ER doctor gave me a scipt for Vicodin. She said that it was safe to use in moderation while pregnant. I took it as needed for the first few days because i couldnt even walk and then i needed to take it when i started to try and walk because that was worse pain then child birth. My back reallly did start hurting until the middle of last week. I went and saw me ob and she was not very excited about m ebeing on vicodin but didnt say it was harmful. Then i went and saw my regular doc for a knee and back check up. she wants me to keep taking the pain pills as needed and so my question is should i? I am taking it now only at night after i have been on my leg all day but i am starting to get worried that i could be harming the baby...any opions out there on the matter?? sorry this is so long winded but i am very concerned!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Ok i have made an over all decsion but first want to thank everyone out there that contributed some advice. I am going to start PT next week and until then keep taking small amounts of the pain killer until then. I think that everyone is right that this far in the game it would be dumb to put myself through so much pain when tylenol hasnt worked and i do have two kids i have to still take care of. I have already been so sick through this pregnancy and was just starting to feel better when this happened. And Yes, The first thing i asked the ambulance driver was do i have to get new carseats even if the kids werent in them at the time and well of course he said yes...so my loving husband got out his lap top at work and did what he called some serious carseat researh and found us two of the most expensive seats!! But he says they are the BEST I want to give him the benefit of keeping us safe!! THANK YOU LADIES FOR ALL YOUR FEED BACK!!!

Go to a chiropractor. It's safe even when you are pregnant. I have a great one and she's helped me and my family through many things, even a car accident that my three children were in. I'd be afraid to take medication if I were pregnant, too.

narcotics such as vicoden have not been shown to be harmful to pregnancy. of course you would be worried and that is natural, normal. I would take it as needed, and stop as soon as you felt you could. I get worried about stuff like that too, but I actually feel fairly comfortable with narcotics, my husband who is a doctor, and a doctor who doesn't believe in giving drugs to fix people is comfortable with narcotics during pregnancy. Only as needed of course. good luck!!

Have you tried chiropractic and massage for your back pain? I've worked in a chirorpactic clinic and have been getting chiropractic care for years and have seen the wonders it can do. Especially in car and other accidents. It's actually recommended with pregnancies because of the added weight and strain on your back. I do know of a wonderful chiropractor in your area and they also have massage services there as well. If you'd like I can pass this information on to you.
I really hope you get to feeling better!

As long as your are not abusing it, It is safe for you and baby!
My ob prescribed vicodin while prego with first son for 2-3 trimester for severe back pain.

I have a long time back problem and have survived cancer, I live in a small town, so my OB doctor also works as a family practice doctor and has been my doctor through my cancer and one completed pregnancy and this one on the way. He has reassured me over and over that very little of the vicodine actually goes to the baby and it is actually better for me to take it and not be in pain and stressing my body out, the baby feels the stresses of you too, so I take it when I need it. My back was injured in a car accident years ago, I took the vicodine while pregnant with my daughter (1 1/2) and she is fine. I finally believe that it's better for me and the baby for me to NOT be in pain and torturing myself. It took a long time to get to this point though as I too was worried about the effects it would or could have on my unborn baby.

Okay, this will be probably different than you've heard before. There is a Quantum Touch practitioner (also licensed in Massage Therapy) about 2 hours from you in Anacortes, WA. She's absolutely great, and I'd recommend contacting her to see if you could get in. You will most likely find it highly beneficial toward getting your body back to where it knows it needs to be. For information on QT, you can go to www.quantumtouch.com. This practitioner's information is:

I know he adjusts preg. women too. I hope this helps

Hi there. When I was about 6 months along, I also needed to take pain medication (not for a car accident thought). I took 2 vicodin every day until my son was born. I don't think that my doctor (or yours) would give you anything that could harm the baby in any way. My son is just fine :) I do know that it made me feel guilty like I was doing something bad, but you have to be healthy enough to take care of 2! kids and be preggers! So, I think you should take it for a little while until you are all healed up.

Totally off the track of your request BUT... You said the boys weren't in the accident but were their carseats? I have heard that you should notify your insurance if you are in accident if you had a carseat in the car. Reason being because regardless of if your child was in the seat it still sustains part of the impact. The person who told me this had two carseats in her car that her insurance company replaced as they didn't want to worry about future liability. Just a thought from outside the box. : )
